While mourning is nothing to be ashamed of for Thor, even he feels slightly ashamed of how quickly he's gone from mournful to absolute devastation. He can't even comprehend why he misses Liam so much, even if he was extremely fond of him.

Sam is a trusted ally. Thor finds him admirable, he's a good laugh and good company but truth be told, they are almost strangers to one another. Therefore, he does momentarily question why Sam would be showing him such brazen affection. In fact, it brings a great flurry of emotion forth as he contemplates how truly kind and compassionate Sam must be, to give affection so generously in times of need.

"Why should I have to live a life without him?" Thor asks, weakly. "Why should anyone live a life bereft of such a good and honourable friend?"

The way Sam buries into him makes him feel that Sam may be hiding tears, so he lifts a hand to give Sam an awkward, gentle pat.
