That's right. It's definitely compassion, and not at all because Thor is kind of like a giant teddy bear, or maybe a golden retriever. Something big and blond and cuddly, Sam isn't too fussy about the details because this hug feels nice and comfortable.

(But he's not going to rub his face against Thor, that would just be weird. Though he would totally do it if he weren't wearing armor.)

"That's just the way things happen sometimes." And if Sam were feeling normal, this would be the spot where he would clam up and distance himself. But instead, his brain feels like it's buried in a heap of pillows, and so he's not really paying enough attention to his own deeply buried trauma. "You lose friends, and you make new ones. Doesn't mean you can't miss the old ones, but you have to move on eventually."
