riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's first test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on March 1st.
● All threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon once the game is up and running.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

information resources

premisearrivalsettingask a questionnavigation

prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

prompt v: wildcard/network

Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.

Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

[Scott doesn't NEED weapons: he's got his fists! Okay, he'd feel a lot better if he had some ants, too, but life didn't organize itself to Scott Lang's convenience. Like. Ever.

But hey, going into battle with Captain America. Again! This is awesome! ]

No idea. But we can handle it!

[Because hey, he can't not sound like a badass in front of Cap!]

[This one does scoff, as though he's just heard the most absurd comment. ]

Shut up, hypocrite. I've seen your porn searches back home.

[All in good jest. Maybe the banter will ease some of the tension around the close space. In fact, as he looks back up, there's a few wry grins being thrown their way before heads duck back down, shaking a little. Good. That's -- good. He doesn't mind being the comedy relief, here. ]

[There's a beat or two of silence, Bucky's eyes fixed on the road ahead rather than on Steve.]

I don't remember.

[That's not entirely true. He remembers pieces, he has some memories of Steve coughing so hard that he damn near shook himself off the bed, or sneezing loud enough that the woman next door complained that he woke her baby. But nothing very concrete, and it just makes things harder if Steve thinks he remembers.]

iv.

The storm wasn't natural? That perhaps wasn't as surprising to Peggy as it might have been, but that's a consequence, she figured, of spending time with the likes of Howard Stark. Nothing seemed impossible now.

"So, who's up for some adventure, chaps?" Because after a few days of sitting in a shelter? Well, Margaret Carter is not cut out for that. She'd rather do something, anything, to help.

[the only thing that ants have ever done for steve is ruin a good picnic. having scott by his side is all it takes to make steve feel better. people from home, people that he knows he can trust mean a lot.

steve looks over at him and smiles. he admires that enthusiasm. it's nice to be on the other side of a pep talk sometimes.

[steve keeps his eyes straight ahead too. it's the best way to keep bucky from seeing the disappointment, even if he's not really surprised by his answer.]

What's the last thing that you do remember? Not about me. The last thing before the portal brought you here.

[because it hasn't escaped steve's notice that bucky still has his arm. it just didn't seem like a good idea to ask him about it right out of the gate.]

[ Don't let Antony hear that kind of anti-ant talk! It would hurt his non-existent feelings. ]

Better get ready to owe me a beer, then.

[Because, hey, if you're going to make yourself sound like a badass, you might as well go all the way to 'trying to one up Captain America', right?]

[personal profile] advanced 2017-02-23 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
[His eyes narrow slightly as if trying to figure out if that's a trick. Is Steve just trying to get a bead on his location, so if they get out of here then he can track him down? No. He squashes that thought almost at once, this is Steve, and no matter what else he might not remember he knows that Steve doesn't pull that sort of underhanded trick.]

I was on a boat.

[Moving between the continents again. He rarely stayed in one place longer than a month or two, doing so only carried too much risk of being found by the remnants of HYDRA or SHIELD. He was heading for France, but he thinks he might move up and into Eastern Europe in another few months, maybe end up in Romania.]

In the cargo hold, behind the crates. What about you?

[he would never. besides, any friend of scott's is a friend of his. as long as they stay out of his sugar bowl.]

You sure about that?

[steve sounds playful, but he's suddenly on full alert, muscles tensing just beneath the skin. something comes at the fence, something large and reptilian and fast. steve goes to meet it, turning it around before it can get past them.]

Maybe we should add some appetizers to that bet. Those little chicken wings are great.

For a room full of people, most of whom were more than capable at handling the repairs and prep for the storm. Not many of them were volunteering. Lola wasn't sure if it was fear, or if they didn't think it'd do any good. A few days of this storm had murdered the spirits around here.

No date nights or pool parties would offset this storm.

After a few moments of waiting for anyone else in the room to make a move, Lola decided to do something a little calculated. Not well thought out, but she figured if they wouldn't volunteer for the fun of adventure, or the good of the settlement, maybe a little bit of shame would help make a few get up. She stood up, and made a show of walking from her corner of the room over to the woman looking for volunteers. "I'll go. Nobody else seems to want to. It sounds fun."

[steve huffs softly. no wonder they couldn't ever find him. he can picture it easily, too easily, bucky hiding in the shadows of a dark, cramped place. days without food and water, existing instead of living.

there's an ache in his shoulders that isn't from the sandbags. it's guilt, because he should've tried harder, looked harder. he shouldn't have let him fall in the first damn place.
]

Wakanda. [steve murmurs his answer. he's has to be careful with what he says, but he knows bucky will sense a lie.] It's in Africa. I got to know the king.

Of course I'm sure!

[Sure he's likely to lose this bet, that is. But hey, literally couldn't lose to a nicer guy.]

Nah, the wings should be for whoever nails the biggest one.

[Why have one bet you can lose when you can have two? That's how Scott lives dangerously.

He also lives dangerously like this: time to get his ant on, by running straight at the next gross critter, ready to work his best punch. ]

There's no surprise from Peggy: it's her secret belief that women are far, far tougher and more capable than men give them credit for. Dottie Underwood had been proof enough of that.

Peggy nodded. "Their loss, then." The hair color of the other women was a little, well, unusual, but that mattered far less than the other woman's spirit.

"We should gather some resources first." Like a gun. A gun would be nice.

Excellent.

[Even before the SSR, her time at Bletchley Park had made Peggy a fan of organization and preparation. She'd appointed herself in charge of this shelter, and thus far, at least, no one had contested it. ]

If you could put it over there, that would be lovely.

Also, we'll need water. [There has to be a way to purify water here. She just needs to figure it out. ]

Little surprise from Lola. Lola knew how she appeared, because she carefully calculated her appearance. Playing to her strengths, going for cute and fun instead of sultry and sexy. Her appearance was her strongest asset, with a decent heart, but she was 'the dumb one.' She was hoping to get a few guys to volunteer then maybe she wouldn't have to.

Not that it didn't sound fun. Just it also sounded scary.

"I, um, can help with that," she fiddled with her hair, nervous now that she couldn't take it back. "I couldn't do much in the preparation for the storm so I helped organize and record where everything is stored." You don't look as manicured as Lola without having a certain degree of organizational talent. Which she put to work storing and registering all the supplies in a neat color coded list.

"What do we need?"

( prompt ii )
[ She sits wedged in the back of the truck, musty with the overwhelming whiff of wet grass that's been brought in from the parade of dirty boots. There's indistinguishable talk between the others seated on their benches at the sides of the vehicle but Allison isn't paying too close attention. Mostly because there isn't any useful information to gather. Just some men hollering about how many monsters they're bound to take down when they get to the fences while casting bets on their numbers, all like it's a big game.

It's no game, Allison knows that. She knows well that creatures aren't some fantasy to play hero with, not when she's seen death associated too closely with it. While the men cast their bets, she fingers at her cross bow, making sure the equipment is in decent condition. It'll be the first time she gets to put it in action since she's been here.

She isn't exactly a professional with weapons, not like her dad is, but she knows them well enough to know how to work the triggers and adjust the pieces for cleaning. But when the truck hits a bump, possibly a cluster of rocks with the way the entire thing wobbles, the string of the bow snaps back on her fingers forcing her to instinctively draw her arm back.

But the sudden reflex angles her elbow towards the person seated next to her, accidentally landing a hard jab into their ribs. Wide eyed, Allison looks to her side at the unfortunate victim. ]
Damn it — sorry!

( wild card )
[ The lights go out, of course they do. She hadn't even considered staying in the apartment. Nothing good would come of sitting around and waiting for this situation to resolve itself. But with the weather harsh outside and no way to step out without the harsh pressure of a gust keeping her from taking a few steps, waiting it out indoors seemed like a decent idea at the time. Now? Power outage. ]

Great. Fantastic. [ With a snappy tone to no one at all, she marches out into the hallway, picking a door at random before giving it a few firm knocks. Who even lives there? Probably should have made a few friends before the weather catastrophes. ] 'Scuse me! You have any candles?

Peggy wouldn't turn down some assistance from men, but she's gone out on her own often enough. When something had to be done, it had to be done, and she was the woman to do it. She looked around, one last glance, to see if anyone else was going to step up, before turning away briskly.

"Good. First off, we'll need some weapons. That wall is supposed to protect us from something, I imagine." And she had no intention of finding out what that was, unless she had a means of protection.

Wow, he thinks at the beginning, this person is really great at spotting monsters when they stumble, or get caught on something. And he appreciates it a lot, because while Ray knows he's smart, he's never been the kind of person who was too proud to know when he needs the help.

"Thank you!" he shouts from inside his helmet, and the suit projects the sound outward using its built-in speakers.

After awhile though, it gets a little uncanny. She must have something up her sleeve. "You're really good at this!" Another blast to another monster before Ray scans the horizon. When he speaks again, it's soft enough that it's no longer audible on the ground. "Note to self. Ask her how she's so good at this."

Somewhere to their left, maybe a footfall field away, he can see other volunteers arriving by jeep from up here. The wave of monsters looks just as bad.

"They're all over the perimeter!" He shouts again, as he blasts unconscious the next monster that freezes in its tracks.

Did people actually use words like 'perimeter?' Fatima suppressed a smile. In part to avoid embarrassing her new friend.

And in part because it kind of hurt, considering how cut up the inside of her mouth was right now.

She was wasting time, anyway. Standing up straight, she pulled the hunting knife out of her boot, hurling it at one of the monsters she'd managed to let slip through. The knife embedded itself to the handle in the creature's skull and the critter dropped like a stone.

Sloppy. Arty would not approve.

"Hey, Flying Guy!" she shouted up to her new friend, "Give me a rough head count of what's coming this way."

Lola was very easy to read, she wore her heart on her sleeve in a lot of ways. And at this moment, when Peggy is asking about weapons, her heart is saying 'utter terror.' Whatever 'it could be fun' Lola had previously thought about exploring what caused this storm, and any idea of 'someone has to do it, and they shouldn't have to alone' was quickly replaced with 'and this is the story of how I died.'

"W-weapons? Right." Lola pulled out her organizer and searched through, "Are you planning to just take some, or ask for some the right way. Because I know where some boxes of munitions and weapons ended up being put simply for space." Although she was really hoping somewhere between here and there they found some others to go along. Other people to need to use weapons. Lola was great with a knife, if she was chopping fruits and veggies for a fabulous meal. Not so much with monsters or whatever was out there.

[Wanda is equally empty handed when she makes it onto the transport, but she knows that neither of them is without their skills. Being without weapons doesn't mean that they're not dangerous, and she's seen Steve adapt. Improvise. He may not have his shield but it doesn't mean he won't be able to hold his own against the monsters, especially when they're fighting side by side.]

No, but I imagine that some terms are universal. Transuniversal? I expect there to be claws, or fangs, inhuman features. But likely flesh and bone.

[Ultron's robots had been tougher, in some ways. Certainly more durable than humans. They would have said that the monsters were robots if they were robots, wouldn't they? Would have said if they were unusually armored or venomous somehow?]

Do you know how strongly they want them discouraged? Driven off or killed off?

"Safe spaces are definitely the best idea," Jason agrees when someone answers. He finishes boarding up the window he's been hammering away at - miraculously, he's only managed to whack his own thumb twice - and jumps off the ladder he's been standing on. He pockets the hammer and dusts his hands off on his jeans, worry marking his features. Outside, they can hear the winds howling.

"Honestly, my only experience with hurricanes comes from television," Jason says. "Then again, my experience with tornadoes comes from The Wizard of Oz and Twister." He shrugs helplessly. "You do what you can, right? Though my hometown has had storms before so...this should be cake." Though to be honest, he would rather be fighting a bunch of thugs or relaxing on a beach right about then.

He grabs the ladder and walks over to Caitlin, giving her an easy, welcoming smile as he does so. It's positively oozing with charm. He's clearly had practice smiling for strangers in an attempt to win them over. "I'm Jason, by the way. Hi."

Just a little higher-a little more- YES right there.

[ Felicity can't help but grin a little as she glances down, still not sure of who exactly this is supposed to be. It seems ... ridiculous that a famous actor would actually be here. Not that it'd surprise her if acting really contributes to people's feeling of loneliness, or being displaced. But still ... of all the people in all the world.

And then of course he introduces himself. As Steve. ]

Felicity.

And I just got here yesterday, so I guess ... I'm just here to help out too. It's one of the more inspiring things about this place.

[ Don't let her totally friendly demeanor fool you though. Felicity is freaking the frack out. Steve Rogers she wants to ask, but she doesn't. It's stupid. There's no way. He's just a really ... good ... impersonator. Okay even if that isn't it, this can't be him. ]

[Clementine can't help but be a little amused by the way the robot words things. "Rust infections" indeed. Whatever works, right? It's troubling to watch even someone his size have a hard time handling the force of these winds. Then again, it might be his height that's responsible.

She casts a glance back at her rickety home with a little uncertainty.]
It's not very big. [If he'd asked a week ago it would have been even worse off. The garage had been filled with garbage, mostly scrap. Very little of that scrap had even been usable. She'd like to have a vehicle in the future if they let her drive something here at her age. She knows how.] If you stand up in it you'll bust into the second floor and I'll be pissed off.

[Not that she'd be much of a threat to him, but still.]

Good at spotting things and good at throwing things. Maybe he should see if she'll teach him something about aim.

"It's Ray!" he shouts back first. "And ummm, HOLD ON."

He turns, dipping a little before he smoothes out as he turns himself a full three sixty degrees to look around.

"There's more of them that way!" He's pointing north along the fence. "Maybe two dozen that I can see from here until the horizon!" Ray turns back though, towards their little spot. "We've got three more incoming!"
