Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Reserves are currently OPEN.
● Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

[At least Thomas is wearing pants, which is to say that Taako's outfit today consists of a knee length skirt, a blouse, (mostly) sensible boots, a black cape, and his wizard hat atop his head to complete the look. It's very cute, just not entirely practical. And unlike Thomas' nice walking stick, Taako has a gaudy umbrella at hand, which he's leaning on as he watches the shield flicker into view.]

Love that, love the look, too, you got a good thing going on here.

[He seems exceptionally relaxed for someone waiting for monsters to come barreling down a tunnel.]

I was gonna fuck 'em up real bad with magic! [To answer Thomas' question.] What about you, my man? The shield is great and all, what else you got?

[Oh, that's precious. Shai just gives the friendly neighborhood cyborg a grin at his little light show. She's not struggling in the dark - a lifetime in space sort of acclimates one to less than stellar lighting conditions at the best of times - but sure, she'll take it.]

I'm not troubled, friend, but thank you. [A nod to his little glowstrips.] Neat trick. You do parties and birthdays too?

[It's meant to be companionably teasing. Whether it's a suit or something more, it's all very run-of-the-mill for her and she's not remotely bothered by the modifications.]

ii - ~~HELPING~~

[ As tempting as it is to go on a monster-killing rampage, Marcel hasn't been in the city for long and it feels way too early to tip off his hand, so he decides to help out as a runner and heavy-lifter and whatever else is needed.

If anyone's paying attention to him, he can lift way more than any normal human would without breaking a sweat and he's been making trips between stations alarmingly fast.

If you're not paying attention to him but you're tired or hurt, he'll approach to check in on you :D he's very friendly! ]

iv - NETWORK

Quick poll: Vampires, werewolves, witches. Good/Bad/No opinion.

Bonus points for reasoning.

Vampires: Depends on the vampire. I've met good, I've met bad. Some of them are just people who are trying to do their best despite what they need to do. Some of them are monsters.

Werewolves: generally trying to save existence from stagnation and decay, so good. Exception for the ones that AREN'T.

Witches: Good, because all the ones I've met are decent and pretty cute honestly.

"No, not forever," Morgan said, relaxing slightly despite that hard look. Being glared at was nothing new to him, not by a long shot. "But if you break the door, then the train goes out of service entirely once we get power back, inconveniences everyone who wants to use it, and generally spoils a lot of days... so me, I'm willing to wait a few minutes, for the greater good? It's not like there's nothing to do to pass the time."

I take it there's no werewolf curse where you're from.

[Having a really low AC, shitty dexterity, and a grand total of 49 hit points really fucking sucks. Taako is holding his own, mostly, but he's decided to back off a little for the moment, in the interest of doing something about the deep scratch on his arm.

He looks up when he hears Shai, casting a quick glance at the dead creature to make sure it is, actually, dead.]

Peachy keen over here. You wouldn't happen to be any good at first aid, would you?

Well... he didn't really have a plan in mind if someone came along, much less started looting his loot, but he rarely does.

He glances down at her with a raised brow, before just sort of shrugging.

"Doubt I'm gonna get through all of it alone." He pauses, adding another package of candy to his pile of spoils before glancing at his hand. It's coated in blood and broken glass, still dripping, so he can't be quite sure exactly how bad the damage is. But he's definitely sure that was a stupid thing to do. "How about a trade - those snacks for some first aid."

[Oh, but at least he's pretty as sin. Shai gives him a bit of a Look and then caps her bottle, coming over to examine said injury.

When you're a military commander with nearly fifteen years of experience in the field, you learn not to flinch from lost limbs to full on evisceration. This, comparatively? Almost nothing. She shrugs.]

I'm a fair hand. No other troubles?

No curse at all. Any shapeshifting ability is determined 100% by genetics and 50% by spiritual.... intervention, for lack of a better word.

[ Angela's lips curl up with amusement. ]

Is it? I thought it was something horrifying from stories that eats people. Have you heard of these creatures eating anyone?

Yeah, I think I'm fine. I mean, I'm not vomiting blood, so I'm counting it as a win!

[He's partly joking but also it wouldn't be the first time he's had to hang out on Death's welcome mat during a battle, because he has the world's shittiest cleric.]

[ Genji just gives a nod at her answer and dims them ever so slightly. ] Very well. [ He doesn't necessarily need it himself as his visor assists in his own sight, so it isn't an issue. And this stranger he's found himself with sounds casual enough so at least there isn't a sense of urgency.

But at her next comment he can't help an amused snort. He isn't used to people just remarking on his cybernetic parts so easily and, truthfully, it's a welcome change. ] No, but I cannot say I have not thought about it. [ Genji taps a finger to his metal chin. ] Children's party or a rave?

Also that definitely gets an amused little noise. Shai isn't much for outright laughing, despite her perpetually humoured exterior, but it's close enough for her.]

I'd hate to see you on one of your bad days, friend.

[She nods him to a rock so he can sit, and then conjures up a hard light chair for herself so she can sit beside him and examine the injury.]

Looks like you might need a few stitches. You squeamish about that sort of thing?

[But no seriously, what is that. Sorry, broski, she's Hell and Gone from Earth.]

Though I imagine it depends on your intended demographic. [She folds her arms and gives him a very visible once over. Is she flirting? Is she curious? Who knows with her. She cocks her head at the outset, mouth quirked up in a half smile.] Can you juggle?

Of course it is.

[She hesitates.]

Although I've only met one person with similar abilities here. I must ask - are you magical in any way? Or do you simply look odd?

[A washing machine fell on him once it was bad :(

But he flops down on the rock only a little dramatically, grinning at Shai in return for the not-quite-a-laugh, and holding his arm out for inspection.]

I give no shits. I can guarantee it can't be worse than the last crap I dealt with.

[He's kind of fascinated by the hard light chair - is she a conjurer? - but decides to save the questions for the moment.]

Her mouth twists. She hadn't actually thought of it in quite that light, but no, he's right. She can see that. Aloy relaxes a little, and pulls her spear back to her. "Okay," she says, "we'll wait. If you think they'll come get us, we'll give them a chance to."

She sighs a little, sounding frustrated. "There's nothing like this where I'm from," she says, by way of apology.

[While Dodger has nowhere near as much issue with killing, he's starting to get annoyed with the sound of gunshots echoing around the tunnels. Especially from whatever asshole chose to shoot an SMG in a closed space.

He makes his presence known with a quiet huff, watching the lizard crumple to the ground and making sure he won't be interrupted by another monster before he speaks.]

Keep that gun to a minimum, will ya? Some of us haven't quite lost our hearing.

[Well, that's a fucking relief. She reaches behind her to the small first aid kit she's stashed on her belt, and begins the whole procedural shebang of cleaning the wound. She isn't going to stitch it here - Kveth knows she's no doctor, and she doesn't even run with a regenerist on her crew - but she can at least wrap it up and help him get out of this to-do.]

That's what I like to hear.

[Look at her sounding all encouraging. But really, the attitude helps. She'd probably just knock him the fuck out if he were hysterical about it and all. That sort of floundering helps no one and nothing.]

Name's Shai, sweetheart. What about you?

Plans are for cowards anyway, and Mae Borowski is no coward.

Her eyes go wide when he calls attention to his hands which, as it turns out, are way more fucked up than she initially thought. Like, she's seen worse, but it's pretty bad and she has to fight to keep from wincing. "Holy crap, you really went at it." Seriously, wow. She scratches the back of her neck with her free hand before the words finally sink into her skull.

"Oh! Yeah, I've got a kit up in my room from when they were handing those out. You wanna stay here and I'll go grab it?" It's sorta the least she can do for ol' Hamburger Hands here.

[ He has just finished off another beast when he hears that familiar fluttering sound. For a moment he assumes he's just hearing things and as he turns around he thinks nothing of it—

But no, there is that familiar face of the doctor who saved his life. Genji's jaw drops from behind his mask for a moment before he's grinning. ] Angela! Is it really you? [ He sheaths his wakizashi as he takes another step towards her. ] I did not think I would see an old friend here, of all places. Are you well?

"Well, what I hope is that the power comes back on, but tomayto, tomahto as far as we're concerned." Morgan caught one of the poles that ran from floor to ceiling, supporting himself as he flopped back down into his seat with more casual grace than anyone should have while flopping.

"Low tech world?" he asked, having made the guess from her outfit and her spear. Though the spear's head seemed of pretty damn remarkable make, honestly, for a low-tech world...

[He's going to wince a bit as the wound is cleaned and bandaged up, but he meant what he said about it not being the worst thing he's dealt with, so his pain tolerance is worryingly high.]

Taako, it's a pleasure.

[Mostly because she's helping him, let's be real, but she seems nice.]
