Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Reserves are currently OPEN.
● Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

[Illya squints. To be fair, some of the weapons he's seen this place are quite amazing to him even though people seem to regard them as commonplace. So he understands. He gives him a nod and he goes back to pointing at the nearest monster with his gun.]

How do you defend yourself then?

[nikolaievich]

[He runs the name though his mental database, but he doesn't think he's heard it before. It could be a coincidence, that he looks so much like Solo even though there's subtle difference. But if years of training have taught him anything is to never trust a coincidence.

Problem is, he's aware by now that his name is unusual enough that if he gives him either of his names. And he's not ready to rule out American intelligence isn't keeping an eye on him. Either way, it's out of the question. So...]

Alexei.

[And quickly, so he doesn't have time to ask for a last name:] You look like someone I know.

[signifies]

[ This man doesn't offer a last name and he moves on too quickly for Clark to ask. There's a trace of an accent in his voice too. Clark has very good ears. ]

Sorry about that.

[ It's probably not helping that he uses a mild tone similar to one Napoleon Solo. Clark is genuinely soft-spoken.

He's calm about this because of Dick. He thinks 'Alexei' might know a different Clark and Kal and isn't willing to divulge the secret. It's only a theory. ]

Did you arrive this morning?

[Oooh, fast healing! Roy has relatively little experience with this; Durkon had always favored the core spells. Nevertheless, the sudden rush of healing magic makes his eyes shut briefly, as it comes with a great number of memories and powerful, conflicting emotions.]

[He takes a breath, wrenches his eyes open, and lifts his sword back to a more ready position. No time for memories and navel-gazing now.] I think I can take on a few more now...

[Billy leans back, crossing his arms as he lets that sink in. At the question, he gives a shrug of his shoulders.]

A guy who'd become a friend of mine came up to me after my abilities kicked in, I was about sixteen, and asked for help against Kang the Conqueror. So, you know, a guy who messes with time felt avenge-worthy.

[wingedman]

[ Sam slides down to the floor, taking a seat. ]

I sure hope they take after me.

[sexpo]

Yeah, thanks for the tip.

[ He's a bit out of practice - and certainly hasn't fired anything like this before, to boot. Next time, he'll just leave everything to Bucky. In the meantime, though, he goes back to work on the wiring. ]

You a military guy?

[sexpo]

Mm. [Howard's still settled down in front of the wiring, and he's got the tip of his tongue between his front teeth.]

You can do all the climbing you want, Peggy. Give me five minutes and I'll have this sucker moving.

[What? He has zero desire to climb up elevator wires. He'll leave that sort of thing to the secret agents.]

Exactly. If they were red, I would just look angry all the time.

[ She seems like a sweet girl; if he's indeed stuck here he will undoubtedly check in on her when he can. ] Genji Shimada. It is nice to meet you, Líadan. A lovely name. [ He bows his head a little to her. ]

Besides being stuck in here, have you been all right?

[realimperfect]

"So I've been told." It's an off handed comment but, even had the other man meant it obstinately, provided she was going to get out of this little issue? She was fine with putting up with it. After all, at the moment he was cooperating, and she just wanted out of this suspended, dark box. She takes a moment more to line herself up, thankfully fairly long in frame even if she wasn't completely tall -

The space was small enough that even in here heels she could put her feet on the side rails and reach the doors, then it was just a matter of figuring out how the hell to get the small trap door open. There's a moment where she fiddles with what she assumes is a locking mechanism, then hits it - still nothing -

"Probably very little, but it's worth a shot rather than hoping they get us out of here quickly..." She pauses in her fiddling to look down at him before continuing. "If I hadn't just come from a place where this was fairly common I wouldn't jump so quickly, but - Do you by any chance have anything with a flat edge on you? I think I may be able to make it work but I know I don't have anything..."

[He nods with understanding. It's a story he relates to, taking a title on because it felt like the right fit. And whatever she belongs to, it must have some weight behind it.]

If it felt right, then it's still part of who you are. It doesn't matter where you end up or what you do here.

[Isn't that how it should be? He still thinks that part of him belongs to the shield. After all, he could have taken up anything else at this point.]

And some things are bigger than just their names.

[ she won't particularly like being on his back, and for a moment lois considers bowing out after all, but — when has she ever backed down from anything? so she steps in, wrapping her arms around him lopsidedly, one over his shoulder and the other under his arm, linking her hands together at his front. ]

All right.

[ she'll probably end up wrapping her legs around his hips, too, but she'll stay on her own two feet for as long as she can. ]

[Illya squints before he can help himself. If this was Solo he’d know he was being dishonest (aka being a little shit) just to get a rise out of the Russian. But Clark, if that’s really his name is a complete unknown. For all he knows, he’s being honest.]

… I did. [He admits after a second of considering if that’s giving too much information. But he figures people arrive all the time into this place, telling him where isn’t going to make much of a difference when he doesn’t even have his name.]

This place is new to me.

[flowlikewater]

[ Now that's an interesting question. ] I was an— adventurer. In a sense. I helped people when I was able.

[flowlikewater]

I have had my fair share of negative reactions, it is nothing new. But you are correct.

[flowlikewater]

[ He nods. ] I have. I will tell you all about it when we're finished here, how about?

[ Genji gives her arm a gentle little squeeze before dropping it to his side. He chuckles a little at that. ] Neither could I. I wonder if any other of our former colleagues were brought here? It can't be a coincidence.

[ With that, he slides out his blade again and gestures for her to follow him. ]

[ He unsheathes his wakizashi with an audible scrape and hmms at that. He doesn't want his brother to die, all he wants is for him to find a reason to live again. ] Time will only tell on that. But I think you will prove yourself wrong eventually.

[ With that, Genji sprints ahead in a burst of green light. The creature yowls as he slices into the flank of it, Hanzo's arrow causing it to lose its senses and stagger in place. No point in letting it suffer any longer. ]

Think nothing of it. We're allies here, are we not?

[ It's easiest to adhere to that truth. The people here aren't her people and while that's certainly never stopped her caring, it provides a certain sense of purpose in their undertaking that helps her hold her nose to the grindstone despite her considerations about the same. Conservation is a common practice among her people and she's rather sure this could have been done better, but she's trusting the judgment of the officials here. Nodding once, twice, she turns her eyes to the corner she'd rounded to find him, then back to him again. ]

We should get moving. I doubt very much that the others have missed us. Together, then?

[ Because two is company and she's rather fond of company. It tends to make the work quicker, for that matter. ]

[ She nods once and that single nod is quite enthusiastic in reference to his statement about red making him look angry all the time. She is in total agreement there, but she doesn't get stuck on it at all. ]

It's a pleasure, I'm sure of it. Your name is very interesting! I haven't heard anything like it before. Genji sounds like a warrior's name. Is Shimada your clan?

[ Do people from other worlds have clans? She's not really sure what else they'd have, now that she thinks about it. Family is family, no matter how distant. Surely people hold to that. Sobering as the thought is, it makes her smile that much brighter with that question of his. ]

I have been very well. It seems there's no shortage of excitement to be found in this Riverview place. [ And she really likes that. ] What about you?

[kuyamu]

[ he's fast. Genji has always been impressively agile, and this is something else entirely; Hanzo wonders whether it's a difference made by the extra decade or an advantage of the cyborg body. his own prosthetic legs have never been a significant change to his ability, but Genji is augmented with the most advanced cybernetic technology Hanzo has ever even heard of, and it seems that Overwatch meant for him to be a soldier.

Hanzo looses another arrow, this one through the neck of the lizard as soon as its head is turned away from him. he calls out to Genji: ]

I have my doubts that my assistance was needed to make this any faster! You seem to be more than capable yourself.

[flowlikewater]

[ That haughty little laugh of his echos in the tunnels for a moment. A soldier he had to become indeed. ] And since when does my big brother sell himself short when it comes to skill?

[ With an other flash of green light he jumps and slices down on the beast's neck, opening a large gash. With shriek that turns into a gurgle, the poor beast flails and slumps over.

Genji sighs and bows his head. ] It is a shame they must be killed, really.

[ It's not particularly pleasant, he'll give her that, but to Jim it's not the sort of thing that would worry him most. He knows there are safety protocols in place, so at most they'll have to withstand some hours of waiting.

That's what's worse, to him. If only because he's not used to sitting around in the same spot doing nothing at all. ]

There should be. But if it hasn't kicked in yet, then it's not a very useful one.

[ The buttons hadn't responded when she tried before, so instead he goes straight to prying the panel off the wall, so he can take a look behind it. ]

[Mary is content to let him fiddle, so long as he doesn't somehow send the whole car crashing down the shaft. She takes a deep breath.]

Lifts where I am from are more primitive. They don't have such things.

[Curiosity gets the better of her and she peers over his shoulder to try and see what he's doing.]

[ His smile falls for a split second at the word 'clan' and he's terribly thankful for the mask. Judging by her accent and her use of the world, he wonders what kind of world she must be from. Interesting. ] It is my family name, yes, but no longer my clan.

[ Her enthusiasm is honestly a delight, it was rare to be around such a positive person. ] That is good to hear. And you aren't wrong, it certainly hasn't been dull. [ Genji crosses his arms. ] I have been busy. I assisted in clearing out the tunnels for a good while.
