Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Reserves are currently OPEN.
● Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

[ Yuri wasn't sure how to take the other's complement, wasn't sure how it made him feel. Something confusing and almost uncomfortable twisting in his gut at joining soldiers, at picking up something like fighting quickly. Yuuri wasn't wrong, but Yurio had been so absorbed in throwing himself into what had to be done that he hadn't stopped to think about what it meant.

Now wasn't really the time for that sort of internal crisis, though. So Yuri swallowed his feelings down, let the feelings of discomfort squirm, and focused on moving on. ]

How long have you been here? [ He demanded instead, changing the subject and pulling the other along, notably not taking his hand off of Yuuri. As if he thought that, by letting the other go he would somehow slip through his fingers, maybe even disappear. ]

[ There were now two lizards between Yuri, Victor, and the exit. While Victor might have stunned the first with a well placed kick to the head, that wasn't enough to keep it down, and Yuri knew from experience that these creatures weren't known to stop. They fought until they were injured badly enough to crawl away and lick their wounds, or dead. ]

What the hell are you waiting for? [ Yuri shouted, snarling as he brandished his spear at the second one, his stance squaring, readying himself. ] Run, you idiot!

[ Yuri didn't have time to say much more before the second lizard was screeching, launching at the younger skater, who dove forward, lunging his spear with the motion. The monster managed to glance the blow to the side, slamming into Yuri and clawing at his clothes. Yuri twisted the butt of his spear, managing to get it into the monster's mouth as it slammed him into the ground, keeping it's teeth away from his face, but only narrowly. ] I SAID GO! [ He roared again, one arm shaking from the effort of keeping his spear in position where it could keep the creature's claws and teeth away from him, while his other hand scrambled for the stun gun. He managed to draw it, flicking the safety off without looking- and then jamming it into the creature's throat. an earsplitting shriek of pain echoing through the tunnel. ]

Of course I missed you. [ Laurent did not even hesitate in the reply, pausing in his stride to turn and look at the other once more. He stepped into Damen's space again, bringing them close, his fingers curling softly, squeezing the other's hand. He dropped his forehead, just resting against the other's shoulder as his other hand slid up the small of Damen's back, holding him close. Savouring the warmth of the other, his presence there. ]

I have come to need you, Damianos. To be without you is to be asked not to breath. To deny a flower the sun. [ It's softer, sappier than Laurent usually allows himself. But it is the truth.

Before Damen can reply, though, Laurent was turning away again. Resuming his course down the dark and quiet tunnels. Wanting to be free of them, now. Wanting to share the sunlight with his lover. ]

"Yes, that Voltaire. Though before the dome fell I was actually reading more Tolstoy than anything else. At least, what I could get my hands on. Apparently not too many of his books survived." Themonuclear apocalypse was a little too familiar for her - she had lived in the effects of that for a few months, after all, after leaving Romdeau. Maybe that was why it had struck her harder than most things to do with the Oros mission, even if she'd dealt with it more privately than publicly. Other than jumping on Allura with both feet, when it had to be done, that is. She may not have liked very many of Alpha and Beta teams, but there was no way she'd allow misinformation.

"Daedalus was my doctor and a confidant when I needed it. I'm sure my grandfather regretted allowing him to handle my care, but his literature choices were very good." There's a moment where she pauses, and then seems to have a bit of an epiphany. "His name was actually very apropos in the end.."

Well, I was thinking something more above ground. There's a little less action, but the sights are much better.

[Of course, Steve tends to take his walks down lesser traveled routes, but surely an agent can keep up with him. It's just a few back roads and cutting through properties. Harmless, really.]

Unless you had something else in mind?

[Steve stands next to Tony like a trained guard, keeping an eye on the wall as he tracks the scratching noises coming from behind it. The creature is quick despite what should be drywall and boards in its way, and that makes him wonder what exactly it is. How big is it? How is it able to move so easily?

He grunts when Tony calls it a horror movie. Yeah, that sounds about right.]

I've got a shield. It's not the same, but it's something.

[Steve deploys the energy shield from his wrist device, holding it in front of them. He doesn't think to mention that it could be used to fire a laser as well, defaulting to his usual methods.]

Don't worry. I've got it.

[Even though he hasn't even seen what "it" is yet.]

Now, do I look like I can't buy my own plane tickets without a company card?

[ HE CAN'T ]

[ That gets A Look. ] You just said you were hitchhiking. [ But he laughs faintly. ] I did much the same though. It is not easy to get through TSA as a cyborg.

[ More like literally impossible. He doesn't really like to talk about it. ]

Well, you were always good at layin' low.

[ a beat as they meander down the streetside, past storefronts, buildings. ]

Where'd you end up?

"Or tridents, mostly... don't know if they actually make those themselves, though..." Wishing he could scratch his neck because it's feeling itchy but not daring to take either hand off his rifle, Cloud frowns and shakes his head, "don't think so? They can be clever, but..."

It wasn't impossible, but hardly something anyone paid any attention to.

"No one's bothered to find out, I suppose. They're really only a problem if they settle in a sewer, and there's worse things around." Squinting into the shadows, Cloud weighs the option of asking Victor to turn the headlamp off to give them better night vision, or keeping it on. Turning it off means they'd have to adjust... probably not a good idea.

I had to be. [ Years ago, that would be said with such bitterness. Not any longer. ]

Nepal. The Shambali monastery, to be precise.

Magic and electrokinesis, so it isn't that hard for me to hold my own.

[Even if he's not exactly a physical fighter, he's got enough spells to keep himself and others safe...]

But there are normal people in the guard, sure. As long as you have some skill to fight...

[He beams at her, not at all trying to hide his emotions.]

It really is you! I was hoping it was, when I saw your username. [Then, his expression falls just slightly.] I wasn't sure who else from the ship I'd see again.

Oh! Yes, I can. [Flustered, and not really sure else to do but follow the other man's lead, Yuuri quickens his steps.]

Sorry. [He adds a second later, with a glance in Bucky's direction. At least he's still moving quickly, and he's light on his feet, making little sound as he walks. Dance training might not help defeat monsters, but at least it helps him move quietly through these tunnels.]

Different from this one. We stayed on a space ship most of the time in the other one, not in a city like this.

I can't decide if it's bad luck or good luck. Somehow, someone from home has managed to arrive in the same place as me both times.

Just a few days. [Though Yuuri hadn't missed the long silence on Yurio's end, he isn't sure what to make of it just yet. So he lets it pass without comment...for now. Yurio's grip on him gets the same treatment, except for a small, fleeting smile that Yuuri doesn't bother explaining. Right now, it's enough that Yurio cares enough to keep an eye on him down in these tunnels.]

Viktor and I have been trying to get used to the city since we got through the portal. [Yuuri chews on his bottom lip in thought.] It looks like we came at a bad time.

[That draws a laugh out of him.]

People can be pretty weird. [He knows he's probably not an exception, especially to a droid like her.]

Just out of curiosity, what kind of strange behaviors are we talking about?

There doesn't seem to be a lot of us. [ especially considering how their numbers had fluctuated since the ship had left oros. some part of her was still hoping to stumble across the rest of her team from that mission at some point, but it's something she tries not to dwell on.

and yuuri's a good sight. she'll take it. ]

Are you doing alright, though?

[Damen smiles, pleased, when Laurent stops to fit himself into Damen's arms again. He curls an arm around his waist, twines his fingers of his free hand with his love's. Will they ever make it to the surface like this, if they keep stopping to hug and kiss and touch each other? He can't bring himself to care.]

I missed you as well. [He says softly, leaning down to press a kiss to the top of his head. Before he knows it, Laurent is pulling him back through the tunnels again, and Damen follows, because he doesn't know how to do anything else, with Laurent.] It killed me, thinking you weren't here.

[ He wasn't sure what he was more horrified by; the fact that Yuuri and Victor were both there, or the fact that somehow Yuri had managed not to know about them showing up for literal days. What the hell! ]

I'm not sure there really is a "good time" to get sucked through a portal and dumped on a moon. [ Yuri grumbled, trying to pick up his pace, and catch back up with the other soldiers that had been heading back above ground. They seemed safe enough for now, but- Yuri knew how easily that could change down here. ]

[So he can recognise his own work even if it isn't really his.]

Better than the original.

[Somewhere in the gloom there's a crash as something hits the ground. Now that even Tony can hear.]

Is it just the one or are there more?

[Where do we even begin? 2B recalls one of her many strange memories.]

Roller coaster.

Riding one, that is.

Above ground might be nice. Not many unexpected guests, you say.

[ that's already a feat. ]

Time and place.

[ what a precarious thing to do. for a moment, unseen, her hand shakes. the last time she set a time and a place with her steve, well. ]

Well, I wouldn't say that.

[Steve manages to make a real comment even during the danger. It's just something he's always done, and Tony hasn't been chatting like he's used to. He almost wants to give the man a reason to talk.

But the crash has him on alert again, listening to the noises, and, now that Tony mentions it, Steve realizes there are distinct patterns in the scratches.]

Three. They're keeping close together.

[But can they manage to take a walk without some danger or emergency surprising them? That is the real test that both of them seem to have trouble with.]

Are you free in an hour? I can meet you at the entrance of the housing building.

[Because that seems to be the place he meets the most people.]
