Setting aside whatever oddities were part of Cloud's life back home, though he does add: "What a comforting thought," with something of an edge of brittle amusement in his tone of voice.

In the meantime, he continues to keep the pace set by how Cloud's moving. He trusts that between the two of them, they'll adjust their responses to the predators as needed...
