It's a common pattern that people tend to rely on things that have worked before, as they often tend to keep on working. Small decreases of returns aren't enough encouragement for everyone to suddenly try something else. It's... frustratingly logic, really.

And besides, if you were pregnant this wouldn't be a sitcom, it would be sci-fi with a touch of horror.
