mod post: state of the endgame
Hi everyone! Welcome to a more detailed State of the Endgame post! This post will include an IC timeline for how things will be transitioning from the endgame of Riverview and into the follow-up game for anyone interested in doing a CRAU.
ooc endgame information reminders/update
I'm sorry for missing the November mingle, when the time came I had very little time or energy and I just lost track of it. I will be posting the December mingle for endgame, and intend to be a bit more present from now until the end of December.
I just wanted to give some quick OOC reminders for endgame now that we're almost halfway through November.
● Please see the original endgame announcement for details about timeline, and to ask questions.
● Any character ever accepted to Riverview can be brought back for endgame by commenting on the Application Page in the appropriate thread.
● No AC or Activity Bonus Points are required until the end of the game. Feel free to have your characters receive items from home, special powers, or anything else.
● The previous post is still available for plotting gamebending endgame plots or setting lore questions.
Additionally, I am adding a bit of additional OOC information regarding endgame:
● After December 31st, the game will be officially closed and lists will no longer be updated, but I will not be removing journals from the communities. If you wish to continue playing in the setting, feel free to sandbox in the game communities, though be aware that ICly, the setting will no longer be inhabitable after four months. More details on this can be found in the IC endgame details section below.
● Even with the game officially closed, if people choose to sandbox in the setting for those four months, I may not be actively modding but I will be available for questions, though answers may be delayed depending on my schedule/availability. I will keep the mod email notifications on and be available to answer any setting or lore questions, and to add in character journals if people want to sandbox a dropped character until the follow-up game opens.
ic endgame details and timeline
As I mentioned in the previous mod post about endgame, there will be no big event or plot leading up to the end of December. I wish I had the time and energy to send the game out with a good strong plot over the next few months, but with my real life being busy and it being the holiday season, I don't think it would be very productive.
That being said, I also mentioned that I am planning a follow-up or loose sequel game that will be a more tightly-plotted exploration game set on a spaceship. I'm going to give a bit of detail on how things will be transitioning from the current setting to that one. This series of events was my original concept for the endgame of Riverview, though I expected to start dropping hints toward the progression of events starting in January. Instead, I'll lay out a shortened timeline here and remain available to answer questions.
● IC Options; December: There are a few options available to characters in the game as of December 31st. They will be told by members of the Orientation Unit of the Perimeter Guard that a reliable way to direct the portal has been found. Characters will have several options: they can go home to their own world, they can go home with another character to their world, or they can try to stay in Riverview (which will, essentially, mean characters will stay on the Capital World, more information below). The government will obviously be incredibly thrilled if characters choose to stay!
● One Month Post-Endgame; January: The cult re-emerges, but this time the leader makes himself opely known, with an appeal to the authorities and residents, saying that he'd visited a temple in the deep woods where he'd had a vision that the Portal was going to grow larger and larger and engulf the Moon. Obviously, this warning goes unheeded, and the cult leader is imprisoned. This is big news around the Quarantine.
● Two Months Post-Endgame; February: Scientists in the Quarantine start to notice strange patterns in the portal's energy outputs. At first they chalk it up to the increased outgoing portal trips, but the patterns continue to get more and more erratic and intense before settling into a more regular pattern that's almost biological in nature.
● Three Months Post-Endgame; March: Throughout the month, the pattern of the portal's energy outputs becomes more and more startling, and more and more people in the Quarantine start to get visions they can only describe as 'a magnificent creature made of light, and it's awakening.' A battery of scientific and magical tests are done on the portal, which is steadily growing in size, and by the end of March, the government realizes that the portal is going to continue growing, which will relatively quickly render the Quarantine itself uninhabitable. By the end of March, the residents of the Quarantine (including any PCs that remained during endgame) are being evacuated by dropship to refugee camps set up on the Capital World.
● Four Months Post-Endgame; April: By mid-month, all residents of Riverview Quarantine are officially evacuated, leaving only a bare-bones science team behind on the moon to try to find a solution to the situation. The science team discovers that the portal is, in fact, a living thing, a celestial entity that has been in hibernation for generations after becoming trapped on the moon while it slept. The portal is now awakening, and that awakening will destroy the moon as the creature expands and takes its true form. The science team evacuates, leaving the moon empty of sentient life.
● Five Months Post-Endgame; May: At the start of the month the portal awakens, destroying the moon. The destruction of the moon disrupts the natural ecosystem of the Capital World, the force of the explosion of the moon throws the Capital World's orbit out of sync, and scientists predict that this change in orbit will make the Capital World uninhabitable within the next 5-10 years, depending on the rate of orbital degradation.
● Six Months Post-Endgame; June: A nearly-complete project that was mothballed a decade ago in order to pour more resources into the maintenance of the Quarantine is re-opened, and the combined scientific minds of the Capital World set to work on creating a colony ship equipped with state-of-the-art cloning technology, stasis chambers, supplies, and massive databanks capable of storing the biological signatures and consciousness of hundreds of thousands of people. A massive program is instated to collect samples for biological signatures and copies of sentient consciousness from anyone willing to volunteer as a colonist, in case a habitable planet cannot be found before the Capital World becomes uninhabitable. People who lived in the Quarantine and are now in the refugee camps are offered the opportunity to either integrate with society on the Capital World via a six-month mini-Quarantine or be put in one of the stasis chambers to man the colony ship in search of a new home for the stored people on the colony ship.
● Follow-Up Game Options: If you are choosing to have your character stay in the Quarantine as opposed to going home in that first month post-endgame, there are a couple of options here! For players who want a happy ending in Riverview and have no desire to join the follow-up game, characters can either go through the mini-Quarantine and integrate into society, where they will concretely have 7 safe years of life before being evacuated along with other Capital World residents to whichever world is found for them to colonize. For players who are interested in the follow-up game, characters can volunteer to be put in stasis pods and will awaken at the beginning of the follow-up game as Riverview CRAU characters. The follow-up game will be starting off with a TDM and at the same time a handwaved CR meme for players of any Riverview CRAU characters to ask mod questions and work out what their characters went through in the six months of IC time between endgame and awakening on the spaceship.
● NOTE: The follow-up game may open earlier than six months from now, depending on my schedule and how plotting for the new game goes, but the IC timeline will be set approximately a year and a half after Riverview's endgame in December.
additional follow-up game information
As previously mentioned, the follow-up game is intended to be a more tightly-pre-plotted space exploration game. Characters will be waking up on a massive spaceship suffering from various malfunctions, where they must explore the ship and complete various missions to access any amenities beyond what is necessary for basic survival. They are also tasked with finding a habitable planet that the refugees from the Capital World can inhabit, hopefully before the Capital World becomes uninhabitable.
The game will start out with a 75 character cap and more spaces will be opened as characters explore the ship and open new housing options and amenities. It will run on a three-month cycle - for two months, application cycles will run at the start of the month and the characters will explore and repair the ship, then for one month applications will be closed and characters will visit one of the many war-torn planets in reality 5561A to gather supplies and fuel and check if the planet could be made inhabitable.
The main genres of the follow-up game will be mission-based exploration and survival, though considering the wide variety of terrible weapons based in tech, magic, and biological warfare that were used on the planets they'll be exploring as well as fluctuations in ship function in the inhospitable depths of space, there's likely to be some aspects of horror.
I will not be opening the game until I've pre-plotted the first year's worth of ship exploration missions and planetary expeditions, and my life is stable enough to be a steady presence as a mod. This follow-up game is intended to be less slice-of-life and more mod-driven plot - more similar to the exploration missions and TDMs of Riverview than the holiday mingles.
I've posted a thread on the mod contact page where anyone who is currently or was previously in Riverview can leave their plurk username if they wish to be plurk pinged when the interest check plurk for the follow-up game goes live.
