I'm going with the kinda Word-of-God idea that the black stuff transforming Wikus is nanotech that's meant to repair things and is basically 'repairing' Wikus into a Prawn from the genetic level up. (It's also kinda Word-of-God that the Prawns might be from another galaxy, and can apparently make a round trip of that distance in 3 years. So sufficiently advanced tech to reasonably give Star Trek-level tech a challenge!).

Honestly, if Star Trek stuff is involved, making up the technobabble as you go is pretty much the way to roll. XD

And this is true. I try to keep it authentic.. but I need to figure out the level of technology in the place so I know what Leonard's limitations are.
