● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

information resources

premisearrivalsettingask a questionnavigation

prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

prompt v: wildcard/network

Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.

Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

[She glances up cautiously as she draws the blanket around herself, ducking her head in a meek greeting. But when the question comes up, she bites her thumbnail nervously.]

I'm not.. quite sure.

[Probably months. She hadn't thought to seek out any food yet since she came here. She hadn't needed food in the afterlife, but she doesn't think it polite to bring that up to strangers.

Her stomach rumbles as she starts to think about it, and her face turns red at the noise.

[Wanda grins. She has her suspicions about Flint, but one thing she feels confident in is the assumption that he's sailed across the Atlantic at least once to get to Nassau. Whether he was a passenger, a sailor, or a soldier. He has a weathered look about him to support her assumption.]

Is that why we seem to get along so well then?

[She'd never make that sort of joke around her teammates, never around anyone who knows what she can do. There are too many people on Earth who would wonder just how much truth there was in it, especially any who might have seen her using her powers at the beginning, lost in learning what amounted to an entirely new sense.

It's a tricky thing also, having delved into what amounted for a mind for Ultron, having seen what lay there and what true insanity might look like. An orderly, terrifying sort of chaos and complete disregard for the price of destruction to achieve one's goals.

With Flint, at least, she can trust it to be taken in the vein she means. Which is to say, in the same way that he meant it.]

Assuming I have those two things covered, can I assume when it comes time to set sail you'll be there to teach me the basics?

[He understands being without. Going hungry, being starving. But God help him, he has no honest idea how someone can be fucking unsure about the last time they ate something of sustenance. One generally possesses at least an idea. Days, weeks, that sort of thing. She looks hungry, certainly but not emaciated by any yardstick.

It's his private expectation that not everyone brought here will weather well the transition or the shock of their arrival. Perhaps it is memory of Abigail Ashe on a tenebrous flagstone floor that impels him to stay, where a man more wholly ironclad might simply abandon her to her fate.

So he raises an eyebrow faintly before smoothing the pads of his fingers against his moustache and after a moment, he stands.]

Right then. Sit tight.

[He doesn't wait for her reply, just sets off in source of food. In short order he returns with a bowl of some rich, dark stew and a breadroll. By some miracle he's also found some species of tea, which is the first thing to be pushed into her hands.]

Drink slowly.

[His answering grin is broad and cheekier than one might expect from so formal a man. It makes him look younger or perhaps by modern standards at the very least his physical age.]

For a price, certainly. I don't always deal in flowers.

[Wanda is absolutely charmed by that smile, about as much as his laugh. It's always a treat to see him more expressive, in light of the fact that he tends to be quite dry and steady, and the way it transforms his face is fascinating to her.]

I've already told you I don't have any riches to make payment with. You'd have to be satisfied with something else.

[The currency they have here in Riverview Quarantine is an option of course, as are meals and dances. Or he'll simply have to name his price.]

[He gestures almost flippantly with one hand, a flick of his ringed fingers. But he is at least still smiling.]

I'll dwell on the matter. I believe an arrangement could be reached.

[She's not sure at all what he's gotten for her, but it smells good enough. She takes the tea and gives it a testing sip, wrinkling her nose but continuing to drink from it.]

I don't suppose you have any sugar on hand...

[She doesn't expect anything to come from the comment, but either way the tea is gone after a few seconds. She hadn't noticed her thirst and hunger before, but now with food in front of her it takes over nearly fast enough to spook herself. The cup falls from her hands as she takes the bread and stew, and her ladylike manner disappears in favor of devouring them with a fair bit of savage noises. It's... quite clear how long it's been since she ate, now.]
diagenesis: (pic#10946424)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-01 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Far be it from him to let that teacup fall anywhere untoward. He's not sure he'd trust her about the shards of it, so he captures it in one hand and withdraws to his own space to watch the whole voracious process.

Not quite sure infuckingdeed.]

I'll remember next time.

[Oh, but his tone is dry.]

[Her face is red by the time she starts to slow down, stuffing the last scrap of bread in her mouth and swallowing it belatedly.]

Sorry... I don't know what came over me.

[She lets out a small burp and covers her mouth, gently placing the bowl on the floor beside her and pulling a kerchief from a hidden pocket in her dress to wipe her mouth.]

Thank you for the food. I don't know how I can repay you.
diagenesis: (pic#10946419)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-01 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You ate it. Consider that repayment enough.

[At least she no longer looks to be quite so miserable. He resumes his former position sitting beside her, his back to the wall.]

My name is James.

This belongs to you?

[It's a loan, right?]

[personal profile] burntbridges 2017-03-01 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nods quietly.]

My name is Letha. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr. James.

[She's quiet for a moment, before taking a proper look at him. He actually looks to be from an older time than her, surprisingly. And he smells like sea salt.]

Are you a sailor? Or... were you?
courtintrigue: (I wouldn't ask for what I didn't need)

Morrigan | Dragon Age: Inquisition

[personal profile] courtintrigue 2017-03-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Prose is generally my pref, but I'll be happy to match brackets!]

ii. monster madness

It is not that Morrigan enjoys tossing herself into danger, but she would prefer not to see the city overrun. She already has complaints about being uprooted and brought here; she would prefer not to die in a massacre before she can return home. Becoming a member of the Guard was not for her, but this is closest she has yet seen this place to a crisis and while she has little affection for her surroundings so far it seems worthwhile to lend her assistance.

And in truth, channeling her frustration into a little beneficial destruction will feel satisfying.

She is barely off the transport before the severity of the situation becomes clear. A small handful of people scatter, yelling, as a section of the fence is breached. One of the creatures lunges into view, snapping its fierce teeth. "Get down!" she calls out in warning to the stranger before her, flame leaping from the palm of her hand. The beast lets out an agonized roar as the ball of fire hits its jaw.

iii. hold your lover close (sort of)

The phrase 'speed dating' means little to her, of course, and while she resents the fact that several of the activities going on in the city right now seem to require pairs she feels unwilling to volunteer for whatever this is without knowing exactly what it means. Curious, she goes near the advertised location in the inner courtyard and positions herself a short distance away, her arms crossed over her chest and her golden eyes watchful. Men and women go from one partner to the next, making what she can only imagine is awkward small talk until their short time is up and they must move on.

It does not take her long to notice that she is not alone in watching the process, but several minutes pass before she speaks to her fellow observer. "It seems more like a subtle form of torture than an effective catalyst for romance."

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-01 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Just James, if you please.

[He knew a man once, that insisted on such a lack of ceremony. Goddamnit, Thomas, he thinks to himself, as if it's fucking catching. He reinvented himself once: a monster made, not born. The idea of being a better thing without having earned the grace of it is abhorrent and yet quite possibly necessary.]

Is a man any less the thing he does away from it? I have sailed, yes. I think you're the first to have caught on so fast. What year is it by your reckoning?
diagenesis: (pic#10946419)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-01 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[She can keep the bosoms, James' preference stray quite a distance from that proclivity. But he lifts one shoulder in an absent shrug, and takes another shot of his drink. Getting him true and proper drunk would require more than what's served here. What's on the other side, for him? There is a betrayer's fate set to befall him, a sword of Damocles above his head. Each pendulum swing is a heartbeat before he feels it at his throat.

Yet even monsters dream. What difference does it make, to tell it to a half-drunk girl in a tavern so far and away from everything he knows?]

A farm. A place to work the earth. [It would be nice to have dirt instead of blood beneath his nails.] Cattle, crops. What about you?

You seem like the sort. I've never seen one, but I've heard stories from my brother.

[The question of the year makes her wrinkle her nose, as she thinks it over.]

I don't know how long it's been since I checked a calendar... but last I knew, it was 1853. I think this world is older than mine, though... no one dresses in a manner I recognize.

[She makes it sound, however unintentionally, that he and his ilk are all but extinct. Something out of a story. He only wishes that were more surprising. He huffs a chest-deep noise that's not quite a laugh, though it emulates one, and rubs at his knuckles.]

Most I've met here are from the 2000s, thereabouts.

[normally would just lift his shield and still have one arm left to deal with the other monster, but he doesn't have that anymore. there's a moment of what could count as alarm before steve aims a boot at the thing's midsection.]

The breath on these things. Their moms really should've talked to them about flossing. [the one in the headlock finally slumps into unconsciousness, and steve finishes dragging it safely beyond the fence before hurrying back.] You okay over there?

[She's just very sorely sheltered.]

That is quite far in the future... it explains the flowy fabrics, I suppose. And what about you? I imagine in that time they wouldn't have need for sailors.

[Partly because she hasn't really spoken to that many of them, and assumes they all live natively on the moon.]

Beyond a few puddles and an ill-charted river, there's not water enough to sustain that way of life here. I have plied myself to an older trade - carpentry.

[ Clark isn't the type to sit idle either. He comes by her cart frequently for a 'refill' of his sandbags. Between the two of them and those moving along the river, it's almost done. He's trying not to use his enhanced speed, preferring to remain nondescript, but as the storm approaches he's mentally readying himself for the necessity.

Using it or not, he can still pick up what she says. Minutes later, he's back for another 'refill', with a spare water bottle, and a few nutrient bars. ]

[ Clark's on one of the early transports out. Monsters, he has no experience with, but anything they have on them isn't likely to hurt him. Getting in their way distracting them from someone they could hurt is still worth trying. The worst case scenario he'll step out and let someone else handle it. At best, he learns a few tricks.

He's not dressed for a monster fight like the others in the truck, and carrying nothing close to what this man has. It's no surprise when he scans him discreetly with his vision he sees knives in addition to those guns. ]

monster madness

[ Sam's starting to get itchy feet. Yeah, he'd gone years without fighting - quite happily, in fact - while getting his degree and working at the VA. But the problem with hanging around Steve Rogers is that you get used to the adrenaline real fast - being an Avenger, even more so. He won't claim to be an adrenaline junkie, per se, but he likes the high, likes the satisfaction he gets from a job well done.

So when the call goes out for help, Sam suits up fast enough, and before long, he's heading out to the Perimeter. He opts to scout from above, occasionally perching on large tree branches (not unlike his namesake) and sending Redwing out to do the recon for him. And it's on one of these branches that he spots a distant monster heading for another fighter on the ground - not yet visible because of some obstacle in their path, but very much so from where Sam is. He lets out a low whistle, calling out quietly to the person on the ground:]

Heads up - one coming at you from your ten o'clock.

[ He waits to see what they'll do before choosing his own plan of attack - whether he'll stay up here and fire, or swoop in and take the creature on at a close range. Or maybe a third option? ]

hold your lover close

[ Sam might not be looking for anything permanent, but a temporary arrangement to enjoy some amenities? That suits him just fine. He's smiling and charismatic as he slides into the seat across from someone, taking a sip of the glass of water he has with him. ]

So. My name's Sam, I'm a Libra, and- [ He glances briefly down at the list of icebreaker topics they've given him - all completely ridiculous, of course. ] Which of the seven dwarves are you most like?

[ Yeah. This is totally going to get him laid. ]
