prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

[There's the faintest look of understanding that flickers across his face, as if he really hadn't known what speed dating was all about and was just now getting it. He had thought it meant that the two people had to fast track their relationship, go steady after only stepping out once or twice.

This made more sense.

He glanced around at the assembled people, still holding his bag despite being sat down as though ready to bolt at a moment's notice.]

Does that mean you want to meet someone else now? Especially since I'm not even here for a date.

[He lets that pause continue into silence, he's not about to give her his name if she doesn't remember him. He'll focus on the other part of this argument.]

I'm going to be safer on my own.

[He folds his arms, brow furrowing.]

I don't want to watch your back as well.

[At least he doesn't know this person, it's easier to be with strangers than to run into the few Avengers that are here in the city, and so he takes the towel with a small nod of thanks.]

There enough room for me in here?

[He hadn't exactly been turned away from other shelters, but he had noticed some that were far too full for the amount of supplies they'd managed to gather.]

[Why not? Does he need to ask? Bucky fixes him with a blank sort of look.]

I can handle myself, it's only rain.

[He's lived through worse, so has Steve, there's no reason to fuss.]

[Sam just rolls his eyes at Bucky's statement - apparently he assumes this is the Bucky he's used to, the one he's at least fought with, if nothing else, so he figures he's just being a stubborn idiot, much like Steve.]

Well, you aren't going back out there. You'll drown or end up with pneumonia or something. Sit the hell down and dry off. You're making me feel cold just looking at you.

[signifies]

[ Clark steps aside so Bucky can see for himself. It's small, and not as well-shored up against the storm as some places, but it's serviceable. Worst-case scenario, they can both just leave. Clark can track all the other shelters by sound. ]

Plenty.

[ There's only him in this one so far. ]

Would you like something to eat?

[diagenesis]

[sorry sera he doesn't tell the other kind of dirty, it's the best he's got given the circumstances. Oh, he's kept company with whores and rolled his eyes while men fucked on bunks beside him but he has about as much sex as your average priest and talks about it even less than that. He takes nothing as sacred, save two ghosts he loved once.

James, for his part, just watches on with amusement. He needs not rouse any hard looks for the patrons she disturbs, they seem content to pick up and move with only grumbling to mark their exit.]

I thought as much myself. So what do you do, Sera, when you aren't hating magic and shooting at people?

[Fuck the world, but he is genuinely interested.]

That's 'bout it, yeah? Arrows solve most anything. Noble shite? Arrows. Chickens gone crazy? Arrows. Not enough arrows? More arrows!

[See, she's funny. She snickers at herself as she takes another gulp of water like it's beer. Except, unlike how she'd done with the beer, she makes a face after. Medieval settings: what is clean water?]

[He can't get pneumonia, the serum takes care of pesky things like having to maintain his body like most people, so he assumes that Sam is being facetious. He knows his name is Sam now, didn't know that when they fought before, but he's researched since then.]

You going to stop me?

[It probably comes out as more of a threat than he intends it to. He is genuinely asking if Sam intends to try and detain him, but 'deadpan threatening' seems to be his default tone of voice.]

Not really. It's just supposed to be more like a precursor to a real date - someone interests you enough in the time that you have, and you go out on an actual date. It's a way to meet people if you aren't good at meeting people.

[And though he's not going to say it, he's pretty sure Wanda isn't the best at getting out and meeting people. He doesn't blame her for it - hell, he wouldn't be either, if he were in her shoes - but it's a simple fact. At least she's here, though, which is a start.]

Or you just find the most attractive people and-

[You know what? He's not going to articulate the rest of that thought. But it's definitely something he's done at speed-dating before. Sam doesn't actually date.]

[Embarrassingly enough, his stomach answers for him by growling loudly as soon as the issue of food is raised. His body needs a lot of calories to maintain it, something that's only hindered by the serum ramping his metabolism up to ridiculous levels, and he hasn't eaten enough yet today.

Pretending that he heard nothing, Bucky's face sets in a stubborn sort of scowl.]

[He kicks the bag he brought a little towards Clark.]

I brought supplies for anyone else in here, I've already eaten.

[In a faint murmur,]

God save us from rampaging chickens.

[He'll drink to that, and does with a little salute of his glass. And yeah, clean water still weirds him out plenty, but it's one of those things he's had cause to adapt to. That, and the absolute miraculous invention of indoor plumbing. He is really going to miss having hot water on immediate demand.

That bit, doing what needs to be done, strikes a chord with him deeper than any he'd admit to. He rubs at his moustache thoughtfully, smoothing it down.]

And what is it, exactly? That needs done. Beyond the slaying of great monsters, presumably.

It's getting ready to flood. Stay here. Everyone is scared. They need someone to keep them calm, not disappear and make them wonder who might be next.

[Too bad, he's fussing. He has civilians to worry about as well as Bucky's safety. Comfort might just have to take second chair for this one.]

What food did you find?

[There's something undeniably attractive about the way he moves, and Sam's gaze follows that shrug, the way the line of his shoulders dips.]

It's from a children's story. [Sam keeps the explanation simple, using the easiest reference point possible. When Steve Rogers is your best friend, you get used to explaining everything.] A fugitive princess meets seven dwarves living in a cabin in the woods, and they're all named after their personality attributes in one adaptation. Except for Doc.

[Yeah, that's a fair point. Knock Out has known plenty of cybs who operate just that way. He doesn't belabor the point.]

Pfft, not unless I was on the verge of starvation. Don't you worry about my energon levels, they're more than adequate for now. I hope you've laid in appropriate supplies? You squishies have to refuel multiple times a day, don't you?

[signifies]

[ Clark raises his eyebrows. One doesn't need super-hearing to know what that sound is. He can't help it: he's worried.

He leans down to pick up the bag to put it on a shelf near the door. It was brought all this way. ]

If you're planning to stay, it'll be lunchtime soon.

[ He's speaking softly and hesitantly out of habit, not fear or wariness. ]

[Is he planning to stay? He doesn't want to commit himself, that feels too much like boxing himself in, but he doesn't have to adhere to any decision he makes if he changes his mind later. So he nods, it might put this stranger at ease.]

Do you have any other food?

[Not that there's anything wrong with what he's brought, but:]

The storm might last another few days, I didn't bring enough to last that long.

[signifies]

[ The reply is almost apologetic: ]

I have some in the back, those ration packs they handed out. There's more than enough water for us both. If we're close to running out.. don't worry about me. I don't need that much.

[ In fact, none at all. It's the lack of sunlight that'll bother him more. ]

Apples, pears, bread, some sausages.

[It's easier to answer the direct question than to address how ludicrous it is that he might be someone to keep civilians calm.]

You can have some if you want.

[wingedman]

[ Sam helps himself to a couple of crackers and a slice of cheese. ]

Disney cartoon. That one exist where you're from?

[ Although if he's familiar with the fairy tale at all, there's a decent chance of it. Even Steve's seen the movie, and he was frozen for almost seventy years. ]

[Somehow he doesn't believe that, this guy is pretty well built, and guys like that need a lot of sustenance. Maybe it's the same sort of refusal to eat that he has going on?

His jaw tightens and he heads over to his pack, pulling out a couple of cold sausages that he raided from someone's kitchen after their house had been evacuated.]

You should eat what I brought first. [Holding it out to him.] It's fresh, it'll spoil.

[signifies]

Yeah.

[ He's definitely a Sneezy. The first time Clark saw something that reflected him was one sneeze making objects crash across the room. ]

[ He can be equally stubborn, and though he can't force this man to stay and eat he can at least make an offer to meet him halfway. ]

Hold on, I'll get a fire going so we can warm it up.

[He's largely being facetious, but there's genuine concern there, too. Maybe he doesn't know Bucky that well, but he wants to take care of him for Steve's sake, if nothing else. Or because he's just a nice guy who doesn't see the need for Bucky to go back out in the downpour when he could be warm and dry in here.]

Oh, come on, you goddamn know I can't. Seriously, just shut up and stay here.

[He's no stranger to being watched like that, though he's from an age where the odds of a black man risking it makes it a marked irregularity. He finds it curious rather than offputting. Social progress is inevitable, and if Madi has her way she'll strike slavery and due inequality from the face of the fucking world and he'll be all the gladder for it. Maybe their actions in some small part manage that, somewhere down the winding annals of the unwritten future.

He listens to the story intently anyway, rubbing idly at his beard for the duration of his silence.]
