prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

[ Bucky pls ]

Let's share.

[ He can be equally stubborn, and though he can't force this man to stay and eat he can at least make an offer to meet him halfway. ]

Hold on, I'll get a fire going so we can warm it up.

[advanced]

[He watches Clark warily, half as if he expects the other man to suddenly attack without warning and half as if he himself is about to attack.]

Fine.

[Some fights aren't worth it, this is one of them.]

You have a name?

[signifies]

[ Clark for his size holds himself deliberately smaller, as unremarked upon as possible. He's aware how threatening it is for anyone, even without them knowing his skin is unbreakable or he can shoot lasers from his eyes. ]

Clark. It's nice to meet you.

[ He doesn't see Bucky as the handshake type, but holds his out nonetheless. ]

[He's absolutely right, Bucky just stares at that hand for a moment without making any move to take it.]

Simon.

[He plucks a name out of thin air, he's not stupid enough to give his real one or to assume that 'Clark' has done so either.]

How did you wind up out here alone?

[Most people were in the shelters towards the centre of town, Bucky had trailed quite a distance to find one that he thought wouldn't be occupied.]

[signifies]

[ Clark drops his hand. It's not an issue. ]

Simon.

[ He smiles, not bothered about being lied to, either, and doesn't listen to the man's heartbeat to confirm one. Even with a fake name, there's always a reason. Clark himself used one for years. ]

I looked for one that was nearer the river.

[ In case the sandbags didn't hold or some other ditches needed digging. There are several shovels to the side. There's clear lines of sight and hearing for him nearly everywhere, but he'd prefer other people not be around to witness that happening. ]

Here, sit down if you like. I'll take out the firewood.

[advanced]

[He doesn't like the idea of being sitting around while someone else does the work, it itches between his shoulders like a knife hovering there. If Clark were to listen in, it probably wouldn't be hard to pick up on the way his heart beat slightly too fast with tension.]

I can do it.

[If he's going to be eating this food, he wants to be involved in every aspect of the preparation. He glances around for any firewood split and ready.]

The defences were holding last I looked.

[signifies]

[ well he sorta wanted to discreetly set the wood alight with a quick burst of heat vision, but the old fashioned way works just fine. If Bucky wants to do it, Clark isn't about to stop him.

Clark does picks up on his heartbeat, as well as some other sound he's not sure of on the left shoulder. He's never heard muscle tearing, and the damage being healed. ]

All right. It's over there.

(ooc: You're all good! Clark is great and I don't mind him picking stuff up about Bucky.)

[Unaware that parts of what he prefers to keep hidden are on display anyway, Bucky moves towards the wood. His movements are seemingly casual, but he always makes sure that he's never fully got his back to Clark and that he always has visual on at least one clear exit from the house.

Survival skills were a must for the Soldier, and so he's quick to set the logs in place and cultivate a spark with friction, easily getting the needed speed and pressure with his gloved left hand.]

Pass me the sausages.

[signifies]

[ He walks very quietly, for a human. There's seems to be little about Simon that's not deliberate. Clark is sure never to block any of the exits and come over to him equally casual but slow. ]

Here.

[ There's a small set of rods Clark had managed to appropriate into skewers. He hands them over, taking a seat furthest from Simon. He runs hot and has no need of a fire. Habit makes him rub his hands spread them near the flame. If it serves the additional purpose of letting his companion see he's unarmed and has no way of springing a knife on him, all the better. ]

[If he notices that Clark is moving slowly or carefully, he gives no indication of it, though the set of his shoulders relaxes ever so slightly when he sees those empty hands. No weapon - no visible one, at least, that's good. Then again, he has no visible weapons and yet he's carrying an arsenal about his person.

Four sausages are slid onto the skewers and then carefully propped over the fire, before Bucky takes a seat that deliberately puts the flames between them and yet the door to the left. Easy escape. That helps him relax further.]

I haven't seen you before.

[signifies]

[ Clark hasn't looked in detail, but it wouldn't surprise him to learn of knives or guns about Simon's person. He'd just hope the man wouldn't have cause to use them. That would get awkward. ]

I'm not usually in the apartment complex.

[ He prefers the places of the city with rubble too heavy for a human to move. There, he can do what he wants, for as long as he wants to. ]

Do you mind if I ask where and when you're from?

[advanced]

[Bucky is never in the apartment complex, but he scouts it out at least three times a week so that he can get a good read on the other people here and what they're like. He must just have missed Clark. Sloppy. He'll have to follow him and find out where he makes his home here when the storm is done.

The question is loaded.

He's not about to give his current location, that's a recipe for disaster, but he can't not answer as that's equally suspicious. In the end, he goes with the truth, even if that truth is half remembered at best.]

Brooklyn, New York. It was 2015.

[signifies]

[ Clark nods. He's making a note of that metallic whine. Following 'Simon' doesn't seem like a good idea, maybe just keeping a distant eye on the tell-tale sound will do. If he doesn't eat when he clearly needs it, what else is going on? He might be in real trouble or close to it. ]

Metropolis. It's 2013.

[ It seems only fair to offer the same in return. ]

[He's never heard of Metropolis, which is worrying. He knows most major cities, and that sounds like a major city name.]

Country?

[signifies]

City. It's just across the bay from Gotham?

[ There's a lot of different Earths here. New York seems all right, but not his current home apparently. ]

[advanced]

No. I mean what country is it in?

[He's never heard of Gotham either, and Clark might be able to hear the very soft metallic clink of the plates of his arm tensing up.]

[signifies]

The United States. East coast?

[advanced]

I don't know it, those cities don't exist where I'm from.

[signifies]

[ Would Zod still be there, he wonders. It's not the right time for the alien conversation. ]

Isn't it strange that we both know of a New York?

[advanced]

[Well... there are definitely aliens.]

I guess.

[Cagey, wary.]

Why are you so interested?

[signifies]

Hm?

[ He hadn't been aware it was a threatening line of conversation, but it's accomplished its purpose. ]

Just thinking, that's all.

[ Clark motions to the skewers. ]

I think those are done.

[advanced]

[He grasps the skewers with his left hand, too distracted to really remember that this should burn him, and puts two of them down near Clark.]

Did you see anyone else out there by the river?

[He can assume Clark has been making random sweeps to check the defences, and he's a little concerned that a certain bull-headed Captain might be forging through the storm to help too.]

[signifies]

[ They should burn him. Clark used to scrabble for that familiarity: someone or anyone who might be close to what he was. Now it's an echo. Someone who might know what it's like to be different, but not someone like him. Krypton is gone.

He doesn't touch the skewers. They won't burn him either, but he doesn't want to spook 'Simon'. ]

No, I don't think so.

[ No one's there now either, he's listening. ]

Should I be looking for someone in particular?

[advanced]

[He takes a bite from his own sausage while he contemplates how safe a question that is to answer. On the one hand, it might make Steve alerted to Bucky's presence and give him false hope that Bucky is remembering him. On the other hand, it might be someone else to watch the back of the most stubborn idiot here.]

Maybe.

[He shrugs, faux casual.]

I've seen a guy out there a lot trying to help. Tall, muscled, blond. Don't know his name.

[signifies]

[ Again, little that's not deliberate. This person is worth looking into. ]

I'll keep an eye out. If anything happens, I'll help him.
