riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's first test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on March 1st.
● All threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon once the game is up and running.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

information resources

premisearrivalsettingask a questionnavigation

prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

prompt v: wildcard/network

Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.

Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

[Eddie is quick-minded, he keeps his head cool in dangerous situations, and he's dealt with a lot of situations where he was outgunned and overpowered in almost every way possible. So he registers the glint of metal under the cloth, but it gets filed away behind the far more important task at hand.

And instead of freezing up, eyes wide as saucers, mouth hanging open, when the other guy moves and starts climbing that leg toward the body, Eddie takes aim. Breathing even, hands steady, he waits until just the right moment, until the monster's balance is right, until the other man is close enough to the main body, and then he shoots off that leg. Shifting, he takes a deep breath, breathes it out slowly, and turns again, taking aim at another while the monster bellows in pain.]

[They really don't though, and she knows it. He's trying to make her feel better. Because he knows she's weak? Maybe he knows how ill-equipped for the job she is. It would be hard not to realize by now. She shuts down that train of thought, somehow willing it away. This isn't...this isn't a mistake. She can do this. And this isn't a battle (yet.) There really is time to. To what? What could she possibly do?

Remember. Jessica Cruz, you have the ability to overcome great fear. Time to remember this isn't a mistake. She's supposed to be here. Isn't she?
]

You didn't? I just figured Batman...I mean, he was there. When I...you know, when the ring came. [He was also there when she finally got the ring of Volthoom off. He was the reason it came off. He saved her life and restored her free will.]

I'm Jessica. Green Lantern of sector 2814. [Which, duh. But the thing is, saying it out loud makes it suddenly a little easier to breathe. She can do this. And just like that, the ring glows brighter and she's no longer in her pants and tank, instead decked out in full uniform. Jessica breathes a sigh of relief even as she knows the struggle isn't over. She still has to manage a construct.]

[Steve nods to Michael, accepting his best guess as an affirmative answer. He sounds like he knows more than he feels confident in. The way he talks about the device indicates more familiarity than he or Bucky have, and Steve thinks their teammate has a good plan. They just have to back him up.]

It'll be all right. [He tells him.] Just stay with us and don't engage anything if you don't have to. We'll keep the path clear.

[And with that Steve smirks, turning to Bucky with an almost playful look as he raises his right arm and deploys the energy shield projecting from a device attached to his right wrist. It's like a hologram version of the shield Bucky is carrying.]

You're on.

[Steve starts at a jog. Hopefully neither of them were planning on walking their way through the forest.]
livingsymbol: ([S] Everything the light touches...)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-09 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you can.

[The answer isn't sarcastic. He knows that Bucky, because this is undeniably Bucky, can take care of himself in a hostile situation. However, that doesn't mean he's going to leave him to do it. He doesn't for a moment consider just letting the man run off in a dangerous storm on his own.]

Pass me a pear?

[Bucky is stuck with him.]
livingsymbol: ([S] I will follow you into the dark.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-09 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. So you were raised as a lady of power. How large is your home? What is the land like?

[Steve is trying to create a mental image of Thornwell based on Letha's description. Her clothes certainly make sense now that he has some idea of her upbringing, and he already has a little impression of the politics she's used to. If it's the kind of place it seems to be, then Quarantine and the portals she came through have to be a shock for her.]

I'm guessing your city isn't like this one.

[Steve advances from his side when Adam drives the puma back with his branch, blocking off his direction as an option for retreat. When the mountain lion finally retreats, he waits with his shield raised for a few moments, watching it go, before straightening up and deactivating the shield again.]

Good work. [Steve smirks, looking pleased with their success.]

Let's keep going.

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-03-09 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Michael hates running, and it feels like running is all he's been doing since escaping prison. Somehow, it hasn't gotten any easier. His legs and cardiovascular system are stronger than they've ever been, and his stamina has undoubtedly improved, but mentally, and emotionally? It's still a struggle to keep putting one foot in front of the other. He's tired. ]

Providing this works, and we aren't eaten by a T-Rex or King Kong, do I get dinner regardless?

[ They break away from the jungle and into the clearing. The small, metal shed containing the electro-magnetic pylon is within 500 yards, and between it and them, at least twenty to thirty dangerous, amalgamations of all shapes and sizes, drawn out from the trees by the lightening and rain.

Michael skids to a halt, his runners slippery on the wet grass. This is the first time he's seen the creatures, or anything like them, up close. He'd always been scared of monsters as a kid. It had taken his brother years to convince him there was no reason to be afraid of the dark, and that monsters were just fear, and fear wasn't real. It goes away when you face it, just like how the darkness disappears when you turn on a light.

So much for that theory. ]

R-Ready when you are.

[Good. At least it seems like the person he's wound up fighting with actually has some combat skills, that was a good shot and he didn't choke it. It's a lot harder to hold on now that the creature is writhing in a mixture of pain and anger, though, and Bucky ends up with a deep gash across his face where the thing nearly got him into its mouth to bite his head off.

It doesn't, however, because it ends up with a long knife stuck into the roof of its mouth. Not enough to kill it, but definitely enough to hurt a lot.]

Again!

[They've got this, they can take this down as a team.]
advanced: (glaring)

[personal profile] advanced 2017-03-09 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[That scowl only deepens, but he pushes the entire bag of food towards Steve rather than get him out a single fruit, mostly because it means he can just nudge it with his foot and not get any closer.]

You're not the Steve I know.

[Not that he really knows any Steve. He shouldn't have said that, stupid mistake.]

[ It's a relief, when the guy - when Eddie offers to get a coffee with him rather than go through the rigamarole of speed-dating. He's pretty sure it's out of pity, what with the whole arm-pat and 'that's rough, buddy' expression on his face. But right now, Curtis will take pity over a random stranger actually hitting on him. He looks over to where the speed-daters are just switching tables, some looking jittery, others weary, others sly, and he makes his decision: ]

Actually the reason I'm here is I saw this flyer...

[ He reaches into his pocket, unfolds the square of paper - there had been plenty so he'd snagged one. On it, it advertises an event, a mystery dinner, where the guests eat fancy food and participate in a scripted story. ]

I thought it sounded cool but it says they're only taking couples, which is... super weird but I thought if I came here and found someone who was willing... they still had a few slots open when I checked an hour ago...?

[ The question is implicit: does Eddie want to go to this thing with him? Curtis is hasty to add: ] I'm not saying it's gotta be a real date or anything! I'm like, not ready for that at all, and you're probably not even gay, but the people at the restaurant don't know that, right?

[She eyes the bracelet like she's halfway thinking it's going to turn into a snake and bite her.

Apparently nothing is off-limits with this guy as far as 'utter weirdness' goes.]

Is that one of them? These... 'wicked powerful objects'?

[That makes him laugh, though it's more in the "oh god that's bad" sort of way.]

If I was walking around wearing one of those we'd all be super dead! Just like, just super dead.

[He resisted the thrall of... most of the relics, but only briefly and he doubts he'd be able to carry one around without losing himself to it.]

This old thing just let me call my ride, doesn't work here though.

[It's less pity than empathy - Eddie and Iris might not have been married, but they were getting there, and Eddie knows how much it sucks to deal with all this on the tail end of a serious relationship like that. The truth is, he really didn't want to go through the whole hassle of doing speed dating just for a few good deals either.

So when the other man digs in his pocket and shows him the flyer, Eddie leans in and reads it over quickly, one blond brow raising.]

Oh, wow, that is cool. I'm a detective, back home, so that kind of thing is right up my alley.

[A pause, though, as he parses everything that Curtis said, and his smile widens a little.]

I'd love to go with you. And... [Lifting his hand, he checks off his responses on his fingers.] ...that's fine, I'm not ready yet either, you're only half right, and no...they don't.

[A little grin.]

So let's do it.

[Turning, he starts off toward the door, gesturing that the other man should follow him.]

What's your name, by the way?

He sounds insane. How did you stop him? What happened to him?

[She always did like to know the end of the stories, especially to make sure the bad guys got what they deserved.]

And yes, it's very unpleasant, especially when the most dangerous ones are also the ones capable of looking human from head to toe. Capable of blending in.

[Bryn begins rattling off a list, the first ones coming quickly and the ones after a bit slower as she tries to make sure she isn't repeating herself.]

Oh, well, there's Sheiva, Jhirem, Pel, Lahun, and Nimaht...and Ishar, Anath, Moirae and Briella--as well as, ah, Freiderin, Karpha, and Nimaht. They're the original twelve, but there are dozens of lesser deities that reside in Askoupur as well.

[She doesn't know if he'll have heard of them--in fact she very much doubts that he has--but there's still the hope that one of them may ring a bell for him.]
inlaid: (082)

[personal profile] inlaid 2017-03-10 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Bryn lifts an eyebrow back, grinning still. He's getting better as he talks more, loosens up.]

That's nice of you to say but if I don't have any fun then it's my own fault.

Besides, like I said, we'll get a group of people. Lots of pairs. You can meet a bunch of people and everyone can talk with everyone else, no pressure.
mrterrific: (it's a funny story)

[personal profile] mrterrific 2017-03-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Really? A detective? Then I definitely want you on my team, let's do this.

[ Curtis has always had a little bit of a reckless streak in him. Back home that manifested as joining up with Oliver's team. Now, it takes the form of him clapping a hand against Eddie's shoulder and nodding in the direction of the restaurant hosting the mystery dinner. Once they've gotten dinner, there's a few hours before the actual event - maybe they will have time for that coffee.

(The fact is Curtis has been pretty starved for friendship since he showed up, and he's only now starting to realize that). Belatedly, it hits him, and he turns his head quickly to ask: ]

Wait what d'you mean, half right?

[ Eddie might have been answering the responses in sequence but what he's failed to take into account is that Curtis was nervously blathering at that point and not actually keeping track of everything he said. ]

Oh! [ He laughs a bit awkwardly, holds out a hand for Eddie to shake. Should've done that before, huh? ] Curtis Holt. Nice to meet you.

Thornwell is quite large, but my husband only owns a small bit of it. I have.. oh, it must be close to a hundred relatives... and they all need space, so we can't all have grand houses. My parents had a nicer home than my husband and I did, but I was married off as punishment. He came from a lesser branch of the clan.

[Everything about the Quarantine is a bit of a shock, since the worst she's ever had to worry about is her mean grandmother forcing her to marry an icky boy. But at least she's used to exploring the unknown and honestly, it beats sitting around at home.]
causational: (mounting horror)

exactly 1 million years later, sorry, I have barely tagged the past couple days

[personal profile] causational 2017-03-10 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
[To say Eddie is nervous is kind of an understatement. It's not like he isn't used to fighting people that are way stronger than him and unpredictable, it's just that they're not usually actual monsters. And usually they don't look like massive spiders.

Also, he's never used a ray gun. That part's a little nervewracking too.

But he's also never backed down from a fight, especially not when it comes to a fight where he's protecting people from something. Still, he's a little relieved when another guy comes up beside him who seems pretty comfortable in the monster-fighting area of things. Eddie glances over, about to speak, but pauses when he sees the long white hair on someone who looks decently young, the wizard hat, and the long pointed ears.

For a moment, he's completely out of his depth. He's holding a ray gun and talking to a wizard elf. He is not the right person to be in this place.

But he shakes it off, because there are bigger problems. Like the monster that's about to kill them.]

Not that I know of. I saw a guy go down there, but it was off to the left about 300 feet, so...

[He waves a hand vaguely, looking at the red umbrella the elf (...ELF) is wielding.]

Do your thing?

[personal profile] spellslots 2017-03-10 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
300 feet is plenty of wiggle-room, let's see how this fucko handles Cloudkill.

[The umbrella is pointed forwards, as thick yellow fog begins to form in a near perfect sphere around the monster, almost obscuring the thing from view as it shrieks in pain. (And takes 28 poison damage).]

Nice! Totally worth the spellslot.

[Feel free to finish it off with the sweet laser gun, Eddie.]

[ That's actually the first thing that clues him in to the fact that something isn't right here. Batman's been radio silent for months. Beyond, you know, a thirty second phone call that he'd used to order him into Blackgate with no backup. As if he hadn't left them all wondering almost since the quake, seemingly without a thought. As if Dick's life is still his to uproot, to tear apart whenever it suits him.

But for him to be finding the time to drop in on a new Green Lantern while Gotham lies in ruins... ]

Batman's been a little behind on his correspondence. [ A blink-and-you'll-miss-it grimace, then he's back to business. He extends a gloved hand with a smile. ]

It's good to meet you, Jessica.

Yeah, just for a few days. I was injured when I arrived, so they brought me directly there. The level of tech they have here is crazy, at least compared to where I come from.

[They make their way up toward the counter, and he turns to smile at her lightly.]

I can think of a bunch of different drinks that are really good, but it all depends on what kind of flavours you like.

[This is nice, this is good. He feels a lot more at ease in this setting, with one person, with no pressure. And he's definitely finding himself interested enough in Wanda to sit and chat for a while without any trouble at all.]

What's your favourite ice cream? That would be a good start.
causational: (laughter)

[personal profile] causational 2017-03-11 07:44 am (UTC)(link)

I was definitely not invading anything. I wasn't even in space.

Hmm, do police detectives with crossdimensional invasion experience get higher salaries, though?
