riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's first test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on March 1st.
● All threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon once the game is up and running.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

information resources

premisearrivalsettingask a questionnavigation

prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

prompt v: wildcard/network

Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.

Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

livingsymbol: ([S] You want to put that where?)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably should.

[Steve agrees, because he honestly was considering just forcing the device open by breaking it. But he thankfully also considered that damaging the strange pyramid while it was running might make whatever it was doing worse. He stands behind Bucky, frowning at the perfectly smooth sides.]

It looks like it's made of one solid piece.

[Taking up position next to his friend, Steve kneels down to try to find a line or switch to open up the machine. His fingers run over the sides of it, trying to catch any imperfection with his nails.]

Maybe we need a key.
anotheroldsoldier: (talking about some shit idk)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Don't put your shield through it. [A pause as he looks over the casing. It does all seem to be a solid piece, and he's not finding any grooves. There has to be something, though. He lifts it to turn it over and check the underside as well. He amends his statement,] Don't put your shield through it yet.

Okay. Where are we gonna get a key?
prisonking: (29)

LMK if this works!

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-03-03 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't put your shield through it!

[ Michael isn't a super soldier. He isn't even a regular soldier. The trek from the wall hadn't been easy. By the time Michael catches up with Steve and Bucky, his breathing is ragged and his legs are burning. He has to take a minute to bend over and catch his breath before his lungs will cooperate enough to let him speak again.

If Michael wasn't so wet, and cold, and already thinking of the task at hand, he would be embarrassed. Michael won't be running a marathon, or fighting a monster anytime soon, but, already looking at the box, seemingly devoid of clues, everything else seems to fade into the background.

This is his area of expertise. He doesn't even need to touch it, the positioning and reaction of the environment around the device tells him all he needs to know. ]

Conductive material, probably got fried during the storm. An electro-magnetic field could disable it. The downed shield generators, near where the second wall used to be, might do the trick. If I could start one up.

Only problem is, those... things. There's a bunch over there.
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] mask off)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-05 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh whoops, they might have. Run off without their teammate. Like assholes. Typical Steve and Bucky, really.

He looks up when the other man catches up to them, relieved that he seems to have some idea of what he's doing. They probably would have just put the shield through it. Bucky listens, and he's not much of a science expert himself, but he nods like he has any idea of what that means. "Monsters in the way" he does get, though.]

Steve and I can clear a path, no problem. You're reasonably confident this is gonna work?
livingsymbol: ([S] Just want you to know you're fucked.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-06 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Oops. Okay, so maybe they got carried away with their bickering and usual slightly competitive game, and somehow they managed to lose track of Michael. Thankfully, their teammate is a tough guy considering he's working with two trained heroes. Steve stands up, smiling when Michael gives his assessment. At least he seems to know what the thing is.]

Sounds like a plan to me.

[He might sound a little bit chipper. Steve likes having a goal ahead. Monsters guarding the way? No problem! He trusts what Michael says.]
prisonking: (35)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-03-07 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
May I? [ He reaches for the pyramid. Someone has to carry it, and he'll be making a break through the monsters, directly to the generator. Combat is not in his wheelhouse. ]

If reasonably is 'my best guess', then sure. I'm reasonably confident.

[ Michael would laugh if he had the breath to spare. He squints against the rain in the general direction of their target, a mile or so away.

It won't be any easy trek. Not for him, anyway. The jungle is dense, the footing is treacherous, and the torrential downpour doesn't help. ]

I'll try to keep up.
Edited 2017-03-07 20:15 (UTC)
anotheroldsoldier: (shit-eating grin)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-08 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Bucky just shrugs blandly at that loose definition of 'reasonably confident'.] Good enough for us. [Honestly it's not like Steve or Bucky have any idea what to do with the thing, so he's willing to take a best guess.

Fighting monsters, on the other hand? That, he and Steve can do. He glances at the path ahead, and slides his shield off his back and onto his left arm, metal fingers catching the light as they flex.]

We'll get you there. [He tells Michael first, and then he shoots a grin at Steve.] Hey Rogers, one who takes out the fewest monsters buys dinner?
livingsymbol: ([Cap]tain Sparkles.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-09 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve nods to Michael, accepting his best guess as an affirmative answer. He sounds like he knows more than he feels confident in. The way he talks about the device indicates more familiarity than he or Bucky have, and Steve thinks their teammate has a good plan. They just have to back him up.]

It'll be all right. [He tells him.] Just stay with us and don't engage anything if you don't have to. We'll keep the path clear.

[And with that Steve smirks, turning to Bucky with an almost playful look as he raises his right arm and deploys the energy shield projecting from a device attached to his right wrist. It's like a hologram version of the shield Bucky is carrying.]

You're on.

[Steve starts at a jog. Hopefully neither of them were planning on walking their way through the forest.]
prisonking: (62)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-03-09 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Michael hates running, and it feels like running is all he's been doing since escaping prison. Somehow, it hasn't gotten any easier. His legs and cardiovascular system are stronger than they've ever been, and his stamina has undoubtedly improved, but mentally, and emotionally? It's still a struggle to keep putting one foot in front of the other. He's tired. ]

Providing this works, and we aren't eaten by a T-Rex or King Kong, do I get dinner regardless?

[ They break away from the jungle and into the clearing. The small, metal shed containing the electro-magnetic pylon is within 500 yards, and between it and them, at least twenty to thirty dangerous, amalgamations of all shapes and sizes, drawn out from the trees by the lightening and rain.

Michael skids to a halt, his runners slippery on the wet grass. This is the first time he's seen the creatures, or anything like them, up close. He'd always been scared of monsters as a kid. It had taken his brother years to convince him there was no reason to be afraid of the dark, and that monsters were just fear, and fear wasn't real. It goes away when you face it, just like how the darkness disappears when you turn on a light.

So much for that theory. ]

R-Ready when you are.
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] head down)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-11 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Bucky doesn't mind the running so much. He takes off after Steve at a jog, shield on his arm and gun at his hip. The comment from Michael gets a laugh out of him.] If this works, I'll definitely buy you dinner.

[As they break out of the trees, Bucky's scanning the clearing ahead of them with sharp eyes, doing a quick count of the myriad of strange creatures. There are several of them, of varying levels of deadliness no doubt, and Bucky pulls the handgun from his belt, checking the clip. After he's made sure it's loaded, he holds it out to Michael.]

Try to stay out of the fighting. Use this if you need it, but Steve and I will keep the way clear.
livingsymbol: ([S] Coney Island's open.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-12 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve makes sure that this time he doesn't dash ahead of his group. It's hard to judge his own speed sometimes, but while he's providing cover for Michael he actively keeps track of him, keeping up a steady pace as they travel. He stops short when they reach the edge of the clearing, eyes moving over each of the creatures ahead, looking for the best opportunity to create an opening.]

We can draw them to the left side. We just have to keep them busy so none of them decide to follow us in.

[Realizing that his assessment might not be the most encouraging for Michael, he looks back over his shoulder.]

We won't let them in.

[That's helpful, right? Steve does pick up on Michael's reluctance and he doesn't want to discourage him. He already trusts that the man will be able to do the job. As long as he and Bucky do theirs.]

Don't worry about anything else but making it to that generator. Start going now. We'll keep them off you.

[And then he nods at Bucky.]

Plenty of targets, Cap. Don't hold back.
prisonking: (41)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-03-15 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

[ Michael knows how to use a gun. He had gone to the range once after buying the pistols he would use to stage the robbery that landed him in Fox River. The ceiling of his bank had been an easy target. Moving, breathing creatures were another story. He doubts his ability to dispatch anything that comes at him, there's a higher chance he'll shoot himself in the foot, but he takes the gun with a steady hand. Something's better than nothing, and if anything it would make his companions feel more secure.

He nods to both men and starts across the clearing in a sprint. The creatures are drawn to him immediately, darting through the grasses towards him. Michael keeps his eyes forward, on the target, and anywhere but behind him. If they don't have his back, he's done. Ripped apart in an instant.

Trust doesn't come easy to Michael, but sometimes you just have to have a little faith. ]
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] running)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-21 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
You don't hold back on my account either, Cap. [He tells Steve with a wry little grin. Bucky nods once at Michael, and as soon as he's off, the fight begins. He and Steve barely need to talk to communicate, doing so in gestures and combinations of motions and wordless shouts or clipped words. They have their teammate's back - of course they do.

Bucky takes off at a sprint, and leaps onto the back of a reptilian creature, knocking it into the ground and effectively distracting it from its would-be prey (Michael). He throws the shield, and it ricochets between two different creatures' heads before it bounds back to him. One out of the group continues its pursuit of their teammate, and Bucky shouts, wrestling with the first creature,]
Heads up, Rogers!
livingsymbol: ([S] Fuck windows. Fuck all of them.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
We've got you.

[Steve hangs back to let Michael know that with a sincere voice before taking off after Bucky. He's a few paces behind, maybe intentionally putting himself second to make sure he's standing between Michael and the threats that try to avoid the initial charge. While the first creatures goes down, Steve leaps into another one, shoulder first, knocking it back. He follows that up with a punch and ends up grappling with the thing as he hears Bucky call out, looking up to see one of the monsters managing to get close. He braces his feet and lifts the creature in front of him, throwing him at the charging enemy. He leaps in after, deploying the energy shield so he can slam into them both--and then sees that there are more of the same creatures running straight at them. Too many.]

Watch your sides, Michael!

[Even with both of them, Michael is going to have to move to stay out of danger.]
prisonking: (25)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-03-26 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Watching!

[ What Michael lacks in speed and strength he makes up for in hyper-vigilance. He sees Bucky, Steve, the spread of monsters around them, his eyes tracking their movements even as he's running.

The goal is within sight. As long as he focuses on the task at hand, and the people depending on him, there's no room in his mind for fear. No one, and nothing, can stop him.

A lizard-like thing hurtles in at him from the left and he throws himself to the ground, rolling gracelessly on the grass and springing back up onto his feet like the world's most desperate amateur quarterback.

Michael's only a hundred yards out from the generator when something jumps, unlike any animal he's ever seen, and lands directly in front of him. Michael stops so suddenly that his feet slide out from under him, he lands on the wet ground with a thump, moving backwards on his hands as quickly as he can- but not quickly enough.

The sticky heat of the reptiles tongue, long and prehensile, latches around his angle, the barbs hooking into his skin through the fabric of his jeans. It doesn't hurt, there's some kind of numbing agent, but it's dragging him across the grass towards a knife-toothed mouth. If one bite doesn't kill him, he'll wish it had. ]

Help- I need help!
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] shield smash)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-05 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Steve and Bucky work well together. All one has to do is shout and the other one figures out, in an instant, what needs to be done or which monster needs to be stopped. They're good, but they're two men against a growing wave. As soon as Bucky puts one down, two more take its place, it seems. They're not even HYDRA, he thinks bitterly, slamming his metal elbow into the face of another monster creeping up behind him. A boot in the back gets the one he was grappling with out of the way. He puts the creatures down with the sounds of cracking bones and anguished howls.

Steve yells for Michael to watch his sides, and Bucky keeps half an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get surrounded. One gets a vice-like limb gripping him around the waist, claws trying to dig through the protective layer of his costume, else he probably would have reacted sooner. Michael goes down with a long tongue wrapped around his leg and Bucky grits his teeth, struggling against the creature's hold on him.

A split second later, he throws all his fucks out the window and throws the shield - it spins into the air and bounces off a high tree branch, hurtling downward at a steeper angle than he could have thrown it. It slices through the tongue cleanly when it thunks into the soft earth. It won't be much use to him like that, but Michael can grab it, at least.]
livingsymbol: ([S] much bullet very shield wow)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-04-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Steve is still wrestling with the creatures charging him when he hears the cry. The warning was the fastest response he could offer, trying to break free of the numbers encircling him. They manage to push him back, but he holds some of them off as he guards Michael. Unfortunately, that isn't doing as much as he needs it to. Some get through, simply going around to their open sides and flanking them, and Steve can see Bucky wrench forward and toss the shield. It's low, but sharp. Steve hears the cry of a beast behind him and knows it must have hit its mark.

But Michael isn't going to be able to toss the shield. Steve doesn't know how long they can keep fending off enemies at this rate. Growling back at the attackers pushing against him, he shoves them forward and swings the energy shield on his arm, knocking them away so he can double back to Michael's side and guard him while he gets his feet. Between swings, he speaks.]

Gonna have to make a run for it! Get ready to move, Michael.

[If they can get to Bucky again at least they'll be together.]
prisonking: (402)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-04-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Got it!

[ Michael scrambles to his feet, yanking the shield out of the ground and sliding his hand through the straps. He knows better than to throw the shield. It's heavy. Even heavier than it looks. The best he can do is lift it, and run.

Instead of running towards the generator, he runs to Bucky, trusting Steve to have his flank. He can't leave him defenceless. Not after he'd saved his life.

Michael smacks the creature holding Bucky in the back of the head with the shield, nearly falling over. He hits it again, and again, until it spasms and lets go of him. He hits it one more time, just for good measure, before holding the shield out to Bucky breathlessly, his face splattered with blue purple-blood. ]

This is yours.
anotheroldsoldier: (lol)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-22 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Bucky, even shieldless, isn't quite defenseless. He twists and kicks at the creature holding him, trying to put a boot into a soft spot, but the scaly hide is tough. Even when he takes hold of it with his left hand and sends a jolt of electricity through the thing, its grip only spasms and tightens, threatening to break his ribs.

It's Scofield to the rescue. Apparently caving its skull in works well. Grunting, Bucky crawls out of the limp claws, passing his right hand briefly over his ribs. Bruised, but not broken, thankfully. There's just an edge of grim humor in his smile as he takes the splattered shield.]
Nice technique. [He's grateful, though. They make a good team, the three of them.]

Let's get to the generator before they can regroup.
livingsymbol: ([S] Sure. Let's play think fast.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-04-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
[When Michael runs by, Steve takes up position behind him. He faces off against the creatures that try to follow, bashing them with his energy shield and then turning to stay at Michael's heels. Now that they are moving, he can use that to his advantage, tripping up lizards as they lunge and keeping pace with his friends.

He stops as Michael reaches Bucky, turning to cover the rear.]

Gentlemen, when you're finished.

[Okay, so he's having fun.]

Lead the way.
prisonking: (41)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-04-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Michael's not exactly enjoying himself, but he's not hating it as much as he could be. His breathing is ragged, and his legs are burning, but there's something to be said for teamwork.

They're not far from the generator, and with both shields acting as synchronized battering rams, the last burst to the finish line is the smoothest. Michael leaps the concrete barrier in front of the generator shed, skidding to a stop on the other side and yanking open the door to the shed. ]

C'mon! Go go go!
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] running)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-29 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[With so many creatures downed, it's easier going now. When they reach the concrete barrier, Bucky slams his shield into the snout of one last straggler still in pursuit of them, then hops it himself. He keeps moving backward toward the shed, watching their sides to make sure they aren't still being followed - or at least not closely.]

We're right behind you!
livingsymbol: ([Cap] Honestly I've seen bigger.)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-05-16 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve snarls at the few attackers that remain at a distance. The ones that are too smart to rush in like their companions and attack the three small invaders that have already taken down a number of their friends. After they get to the barrier, they have the advantage. Bucky beats off the last pursuer and Steve remains on guard, keeping close to Michael.]

We're clear for now. It's up to you. I hope you can fix this thing.

[There's a dry note in Steve's voice. Broken machines again. He does nod appreciatively at the injured lizard man that is recovering on the other side of the wall.]

Guess you showed them.
prisonking: (28)

[personal profile] prisonking 2017-05-19 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So do I.

[ Michael has only seen the generator from a distance. He runs his hands over the casing, feeling over the buttons and switches, creating a blueprint in his mind. What he lacks in experience he makes up for with imagination, and a knack for connecting the tiniest of dots.

There's a port in the back, with a wire thicker than his wrist jutting out of the ground. He yanks it out, and plugs it back in. The machine whirs to life.

Sometimes, it really is that simple.

Michael laughs, shaking his head, and flips a series of switches. There's a hum, more in their bones than the air itself as the field begins to charge, reminiscent of a plasma ball. Electricity crackles in the air.

He pulls the pyramid out of his jacket, holding it out to Steve and Bucky. ]

Feels like Science World. Now who wants to dunk?

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-05-24 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Bucky keeps half an eye on their surroundings and half an eye on Michael. The laugh he lets out is disbelieving when he gets the generator fired up again just by unplugging and plugging it back in.] I can't believe it'd be that easy. [But apparently they got lucky. On this leg of the mission, anyway.

When he holds out the pyramid, Bucky takes it in his metal hand, glancing from it to the light show going on in front of them.]

Think it's going to explode?
