prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

prompt v: wildcard/network

Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.

Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

Consider it yours, then. Draw whatever you'd like.

[He gets up from the place he'd taken at Clark's side. He is slow about it, which may be mistaken for a disarming lack of wariness. Certainly he does not move like anything ails him. Yet, he is a man well-traveled and often injured, and the cold and the wet have sunk into his bones.

He feels old. And he is, for a pirate. The most reputable among them have often made their name before they were ten-and-twenty. Few can contend with the time on Earth that Teach and Hornigold had. Flint is nearly forty, and he knows damn well he doesn't heal like he used to.

It's cause for a pensive silence as he sits back down beside the cookstove. He shuts it off, stretches one leg out and leans his hand on his knee.]

What are the people like, in your time?

[Are they free? He wants to ask, refrains. He knows too much of human nature to be uncertain of the answer, yet hope persists in dark places.]
signifies: (clark ( 051 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ Clark tracks him by sound, alert for some illness in the body. Somewhere Flint himself might not know to look. Medicine has progressed since that time, and Clark has a useful X-ray machine in his eyes.

He folds the notebook in half, smooths the page, and starts with a cross-section of Sputnik. The sketch, in-progress, is clearly visible to Flint. ]

That's a broad question.

[ Clark looks over at him. ]

What are you thinking about, specifically?
diagenesis: (pic#11085916)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
[He'll find myriad things in doing so. Old breaks that healed poorly, fragmented bits of shrapnel in a dozen places, long healed and enfolded into muscle. No illnesses to speak of, he's as hale as he's ever been, but piracy is not kind.]

Mm.

[He lifts his glass to his lips, but the drink he takes is shallow.]

What do you know of the 1700s? Perhaps it's easier a thing to reverse engineer than explain outright.
signifies: (clark ( 006 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to say I'm not extremely familiar.

[ Flint's history is bloody. He suspected as much, but he still has no reason to fear the man or expect that he will hurt others (yet). ]

I'm aware slavery and piracy was common, and the British and Spanish empires are the dominant forces on the globe.
diagenesis: (pic#10946419)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
No, you don't have to be. Those were my areas of contention.

[He leans forward, props his chin in his hand. Rubs his thumb absently through the bristles of his beard.]

I'm aware that little changes in my lifetime, but it's been a dearly-held hope of mine that one day all people might live equally. I'm curious as to whether or not that's a viable possibility in your time.
signifies: (clark ( 007 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
There is inequality.

[ He sets down the pen. ]

There're always those who want to fight it. There are more of them, and they have more money and connections at their disposal.

[ He's not sure yet that he trusts humanity with everything, but with this: a resounding yes. Clark has seen the best of them. ]

It's a difficult dream to have. Still, it's happening.
diagenesis: (pic#10946424)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I can live with that.

[Not that he has much choice, but he seems to be giving himself permission more than anything. He sits straight again, and takes another drink. Glass nearly empty, he opts to refill it. He doesn't easily get drunk.]

And what about you? What's your home like?
signifies: (kal ( 005 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
[ Lost. ]

Kansas?

[ He smiles reflexively, thinking of his mother. ]

It's a quiet place, with good, hardworking people.

[ The moment Metropolis was clear, Clark was in Smallville. He'd known all the people affected by Zod's attack there. ]

My father was a farmer, and so was his before him. I've moved out, to the city. I'm a journalist.
diagenesis: (pic#10946408)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
[He doesn't know the place, but it's familiar enough to something else he's heard. He touches his fingers to his lips in thought, approximating the location of the Kansa tribes in the Americas.]

It wouldn't happen to be in the central interior of the Americas, would it?

[One of these days, he's going to find a fucking map. Not that he cares especially about the Americas themselves, but the idea that they fended off the British is-- important to him.]

Journalism. [He can infer the meaning of the word, one who writes in journals.] You know, in my day I could take that to mean you're anything from a ship's captain to a priest.

[His tone's a bit dry. He's not put out by the alien terminology, and thus far this young man has proven himself to be well apart from patronizing explanations.]
signifies: (clark ( 008 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ Clark nods. ]

Yes. It's called the Midwest. A lot of farmland.

[ If there's space in these pages he can add a map of the world as it is today.

Clark ducks his head and smiles. ]

Are you familiar with The Daily Courant? It's considered the world's first real newspaper.
diagenesis: (pic#11085916)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
A publication by Elizabeth Mallet. Yes. I kept on with it when I was in London, until she sold it off.

[By that point, he was entrenched in other things. Being a Navy man meant his sojourns in the city were few and far between, and when he was in London after 1705 he was-- preoccupied with the Hamiltons.]

So you write periodicals. You've the temperament for it, certainly.

[There's not a trace of any mockery there. It's an important part of democracy, one he's glad to have gained traction as literacy increased across the world.]
signifies: (clark ( 007 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ That might be the nicest thing Flint's ever said. Clark's not sure how to deal with the compliment from someone who seems like he hands them out very sparingly, so he glosses over it. ]

Print journalism is called the Fourth Estate. It's expanded in the last fifty years: everyone has cameras, so everyone can share pictures of what's happening with each other. Even if you can't read, you can listen to the news or watch it. It's much harder to hide things.
diagenesis: (pic#10946424)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Not entirely true, he told Thomas once he was a good man, and that someone ought defend that. That, undoubtedly, was the nicest thing he's ever said to anyone.

But as compliments go, he may as well just said Clark hung the moon, for how sparingly he hands them out.]

A reference to parliament, is it? [He sounds amused when he says that. Oh, the Lords must have lost their fucking minds at that calculated disrespect.] Sounds as if it has its share of pros and cons as an institution. I can see that both being very useful and very, very abused.
signifies: (clark ( 054 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ Clark nods. ]

The institution of free press means we have rights to go where we feel we want to, and not be prosecuted by the government for the stories we write. No system is perfect. You'll always have [ some yahoos, Lo would say. ] some who abuse it.
diagenesis: (pic#10946423)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
[He chuckles. It's a faint, dark sound. Obviously not borne of any especial humour.]

Indeed. But it seems it could well provide a decent avenue for combating the larger issues at hand.
signifies: (clark ( 004 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
A news story impeached a president of the United States. That's just in America.

[ He's not one for embellishment. Flint is hopeful despite what he's seen and been through. Clark is mindful of that. ]
diagenesis: (pic#11085912)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
[He understands the Latin base, thank God and the Hamiltons for his love of classical Latin. Another word whose meaning he has to infer.]

You mean to tell me that the Americas didn't end up with a king of their own?
signifies: (clark ( 004 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
No.

[ Film stars or sports figures, but that's besides the point. ]

In fact, there're very few monarchies left in the world.
diagenesis: (pic#11085911)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
[He had nothing against Queen Anne personally, or King George, save in that abstract sort of way where he wants to burn the aristocracy to the fucking ground. But that gets him to raise an eyebrow.]

Elected governments, then?
signifies: (clark ( 054 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ Nodding. ]

That's right. Or constitutional monarchies, where their power is more symbolic than absolute.
diagenesis: (pic#11085919)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
[He expects to feel a voracious sort of justification. Something sharp and brutal and right. One can be glad at the collapse of an empire, and still mourn its ages.]

What of England?

[Clark is the first person he's asked this question, which is made very personal by dint of his history with her. But then, he's already all but told the man he's London born, he sees no harm in this admittance.]
signifies: (kal ( 001 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's a pointed question, and personal, seeing as Flint's inquired about the state of the world and for other people, not a specific country.

At the same time, he doesn't know what Flint wants. ]

What would you like to know?
diagenesis: (pic#10946422)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Is she still a monarchy? [A bit more dryly,] Colonizing everything she can get her hands on with no regard for the lives she upsets?
signifies: (kal ( 002 ))

[personal profile] signifies 2017-03-03 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's cruel and intimate. Only someone who loves deeply would feel that kind of betrayal.

What was left of Krypton came to destroy Earth. ]

Britain is called the United Kingdom now. There aren't many colonies left in the world, and I think almost all of the British Empire has dissolved.

[ His mouth twitches. ]

You might find an Irishman who feels differently, but there you go.
diagenesis: (pic#10946424)

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
[He hmms faintly and then as if spurned onward by that admission he stands. He's still wet to the bone, though the warmth of this small place has dried his shirt in patches, but he decides abruptly to be done with it, and so he peels his shirt off in one corner of the room, hangs it and selects another he's obviously brought for this purpose. He's not shy and this is absolutely common practice among men of his era so it doesn't even stop to register that it might be somewhat inappropriate. He's brusque about it besides.]

I notice you didn't say what became of her royalty.
