riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

There's leftovers if you're hungry.

[ Or he could be angry, or confused. People don't really adjust to being here so quickly unless they, like Clark, have some idea of what it's like to be outsiders.

There's no harm being friendly to someone new, so Clark volunteers information about himself first. ]

I'm from Metropolis. [ Then he remembers very few people here recognise it. ] It's a city in the United States. What about you?

Of that, I have no doubt.

[If anything, five minutes is probably too easy a deadline for a man like Stark.

She goes back to eyeballing the hatch, and measuring the distance from the rail to it.]

My concern is rather more about why we have stopped, and if there's anyone who might try to take undue advantage of our position.

Well, I can kinda tell this one wasn't built with a lot of first timers in mind. [ Cramped and apparently lacking a backup power source. He pokes a little deeper in, straining a bit to reach until the screwdriver slips abruptly. ]

Aaaand there goes our chance at reaching the power source. [ His glance down is quick and a little sheepish. ]

-Kidding. But we're probably not getting this thing up and running again.

He could hold out on hoping the people in Riverview in all their variety were somewhat more sensible and about as roughly friendly as the civilians and low-level crew as the Eluvio; then again, the lack of manual overrides had stuck out to him when dealing with the aftermath of the fleet-wide outages. He shifts to the side to adjust and compensate for her movements, keeping the light of his phone more or less focused on what she's attempting.

"A flat edge?" How flat, he almost asks, mentally scanning through what he has on him. In the end, he digs into his pocket and offers up the dogtags he'd been given what feels like a lifetime ago: it's hardly a matter of days. Keeping up with his life lately has been a challenge in and of himself, but offering up the remnants of the evidence of his second most recent involuntary universe relocation, it's like making forward progress.

Then again, having familiar dogtags offered for her yay or nay might be a different kind of tip-off for her. "Will this work?"
genice: (desperate | then i saw you)

( He tips his head forward in a nod of acknowledgement; choosing to have faith in a statement of ability instead of hold it in suspicion. He's run into many more competent people as a whole than incompetent; besides, he knows he's the one who doesn't have an offensive skillset to offer in this particular arena.

All those thoughts are abruptly sidelined as a very familiar name reaches his ears. Without thinking about it, Victor takes a step forward, reaching out to his temporary companion; he checks himself (don't tangle with someone geared up for a fight, even when thoroughly surprised) at the last second, fingers curling into a fist. Yurio?
)

Yuri's here?! In Riverview?

( Moreover, Yuri Plisetsky was a trainee of what smacks of a militant sort of instruction? It's not so completely unheard of, especially not where they're from, but it's such stark evidence of a shift in circumstances he doesn't bother hiding the flicker of distress across his features. Yuri's always been free to make his own choices in the face of his own life; fifteen or fifty-five, in Victor's eyes, the same would hold true.

It doesn't make it a restive thought. Risks of injury in a field like this are completely different than what they faced on the ice for competitive figure skating.
)

How long has he been here? ( Clarifying: ) In the city? How long has he been training with you?

She reaches back for whatever he's offering without even looking down, at first. Her mind is, for the moment, a bit too focused on the door above her and how she was going to jimmy it open to pay too much attention to what he's found for the first few moments. When the time comes to get the dog tags in to the correct position to attempt what she was thinking of, however - she takes a moment to look down, and the proverbial record scratch happens in her mind and in the expression on her face. Blue eyes focus on the dog tags in her hand for a moment, and then look down at him -

It's almost like she's sizing him up for a moment or debating how to react, but the words seem to tumble out before she has a chance to fully formulate a reaction.

"Shit, you were there before here too?" She'd ditched her own set of dog tags in her new accommodations as soon as possible, happy to no longer have to wear them. This was one hell of a wild ride all in all, but they'd have plenty of time when they weren't trapped in an elevator to discuss it. Re-L shakes her head to bring herself out of her little bit of shock and turns back to the overhead door, using a corner to act as a key or flathead screwdriver to see if it'll make this attempt a little easier, focused on the task at hand.

"If I wasn't so damn tired of being trapped in situations like these in the dark I'd sit and discuss everything to do with how the hell we've gone from there to here, but... I think I would prefer to do so over my planned coffee."

( In many other circumstances, Victor would smile at the patent absurdity. Hanging around in tunnels that don't have some sort of cultural curiosity and thus generated interest from that sector would sum up any thoughts on tunnels he'd had back on Earth.

Being two universes removed has shifted his expectations. It has not, however, made him less extra in the space he gets between things backsliding into hell. Just ask... well, Yuuri. Hm.

Yuri's question is all he deigns to respond to, adjusting his own mental map and giving a nod of his head and a wave of his hand onward. All the screeching echoing is doing wonders for his focus.
)

Oh, more or less. I'd be a terrible runner if I was lost all the time!

( That finally merits something of a smile on Victor's part; hah. Stopping for directions with no one to ask is a pointless endeavour. He's moving between front lines and the secured sectors. It's not restive, and he doesn't love it, but he grits his teeth and gets through it regardless.

In this sector of tunnels things are supposed to be clear, but the uncertain nature of what's blocked off versus what's open versus what the invasive species had burrowed through makes it all something of a gambit. Nonetheless, he moves forward into a jog down this tunnel without hesitation. Idly ambling along while Yuri's homing beacon of a cry for the predators does its work seems like a singularly terrible idea.
)

It's a left up ahead, a right, then another left before we hit a surface access point. Someone should be stationed there.

( Meaning if they're getting chased down, as long as they're swift on their feet, it's unlikely it'll be two on whatever number of predators are in pursuit.

It might be three on whatever number of predators are in pursuit!
)

Ah, good. Teenagers. In most honesty, his experience with teenagers is with a far more motivated and disciplined section; tempers and hormones and tendency to sprout up over the course of a few months aside, the upcoming generation chasing at his heels are the same age as he was when he was chasing his predecessors off the podium.

"Ah, good," Victor says with a half smile, glancing back over his shoulder. "There's a decent chance this area isn't as clear as previously thought. Mind if we keep going?"

He gestures them on, moving forward. Thus far nothing appears to be stalking after them. Victor would prefer for that to remain the case.

[When they finally get a glimpse of the thing that has been tracking Victor, it's scrambling toward them with a shriek; Bucky pulls the trigger and it goes down heavily into the muck with a fresh bullet hole in its skull. He's not going to feel bad about that. He straightens and shoulders his rifle again, nodding down a branching-off tunnel.] If this sector isn't clear, you should get back up to your rendezvous point.

[He does take in, though, that Yuri's name rings a bell for this guy. Someone his wayward trainee knows? From home, he guesses. He wonders if that'll help with the kid's homesickness or not.] Friend of his? Yuri's been here a few weeks, same as me. [Bucky catches that flicker of distress, and sighs briefly.]

He wanted to learn to defend himself. He's doing well, but he was supposed to stay with his squad. Don't worry, I'll find him.

So you're American.

[That part isn't exactly a surprise. But he's so... nice about it, it makes Illya slightly distrustful. Probably unfair to Clark, but no one is better at being two-faced than Americans.]

And what a fine job of bed rest you're doing. [ Laurent chides again, settling back onto his feet with his arm still around the other's neck. His hand slid from the nape, towards the other's face instead. Softly stroking his fingertips along the line of the other's jaw, as if marvelling that the other really was there at all. ]

And if I make you regret it? [ He murmured, but was smiling, even as he said it. It faded though, his eyes closing as he shuddered out a soft, slow breath. ]

I didn't think you would be here. [ He admitted softly, quietly. ] When they told me that the portal is drawn to pulling people who feel displaced- [ He swallowed, shaking his head softly. ] For that alone, I thought it would never take you. You've always been so sure of your place...

[ Illya's tone is very brusque. Yet, he's only asking questions. It doesn't bother Clark; he's not afraid of this man. ]

Probably Lola. She's one of our roommates. If you want any pie, I made it. [ Clark likes to bake, so there's usually at least half in the fridge. ] Tea and coffee are over there, in that cupboard.

[ Russia spans eleven timezones. 'Alexei' doesn't answer with a city, and gave no last name. Cagey guy. ]

This might seem like a strange question, but what's the year where you're from?

A shame?

[ Hanzo is genuinely perplexed by the idea. he's taken human lives and not considered them worth a thought, especially given that he tries to keep his assassination jobs focused on the corrupt and the dishonourable. he can't imagine feeling any pity for a mindless animal like this.

he comes to stand beside Genji, with the creature at their feet, and considers it. both of his arrows are deeply embedded in its flesh; impossible to retrieve unless he cuts them out, which he couldn't do even if he wanted to. he doesn't carry a single blade. even holding a knife makes his hands prickle with an awful static feeling, sometimes. ]

These are nothing more than a waste of arrows.

[ he'll have to have more crafted somewhere in the city. ]

[ No, he wouldn't manage that by just messing with the wiring behind the control panel. He's got no idea she doesn't know that, though, so he doesn't even point it out. ]

Backup generators? [ He glances at her. ] What year are you from?

[ Well at least she knows about lifts, so that's a start. On the other hand, even if she does look human, he can't possibly know if she's from Earth like he is. ]

You weren't here to make it tolerable. [He retorts smartly, settling his hands on Laurent's hips, thumbing over fabric as if he's just trying to remind himself that this is real. That he isn't alone, without his love. Apparently it's hard to believe for both of them, and he smiles, tilting his cheek into his lover's touch.] I found you, didn't I? You can't make me regret that.

[He tilts his head a little more, presses a kiss to Laurent's palm, then brings a hand up to curl his fingers over Laurent's. Those words feel like a confession, and he treasures the opening up, but- he has it all wrong. Damen's uncertainty had only grown on their way to Ios, had ballooned into something great and terrible when Kastor betrayed him. When he heard bells, and knew that his brother's body lay only feet from him.]

Laurent, the only thing I am sure of these days is that my place is at your side.

[ as fate would have it, Hanzo has the same idea. he's seen the city on foot, but even in this place, it isn't so easy for him to put aside the habits of an assassin; he has to know its vantage points, to know the layout as clearly as he would by a map. it has the advantage of being isolated, too, which Hanzo is glad for. after a decade in exile, his patience for people wears thin quickly — worse here, where the people are all strange and unfamiliar, and one of them is a brother that should be dead. Genji believes he should change his ways. not everything is as simple as putting an end to his killing.

despite escaping the streets to avoid the people below, when he comes across someone else on the rooftops in a moment of stillness, curiosity catches at him and draws him towards the man. he has to wonder what kind of person it is that would come up here, for what reason; he knows his own, but can't imagine another thinking the same way. Hanzo's metal prosthetic feet click quietly against the stone as he approaches, letting the sound announce his presence before he speaks. ]

I did not expect to encounter anyone else here.

[ his stance is cautious, but his kyudo-gi is pulled on with both sleeves and his hands are by his sides — deliberately kept away from the bow and quiver he has strapped to his back. ]

ii: into the depths
[The past few days have been a blur to him, being pulled from one new universe to yet another. It's just his luck that he'd arrived right in the middle of a crisis of sorts, too. Yuuri supposes he can't complain too much about something that's keeping him too busy to lose himself in anxious thoughts, though.

After picking up some first aid supplies, Yuuri heads down to the tunnels before he can talk himself out of it. He's just passed a group of engineers assessing the damage, when some suspicious noise further down the tunnel makes him pause and then look back at the others heading the same direction.]

Um. Most of the monsters have been cleared out already, right? [His voice wobbles a little with nerves, but he presses on, clutching the bag to his chest.] I brought first aid supplies, but I don't think I can fight one of those things off.

iii: trapped in a...
[Frankly, Yuuri's had enough of blackouts to last for a good while. Even after he's been warned of the blackouts, he still isn't expecting it when one suddenly hits as he's heading back to his floor. He gasps in alarm as the elevator suddenly jolts to a stop and the lights above them flicker and the go out. Only when it's been quiet for a second or two does he finally straighten up again.]

Are you okay? [There had been someone else in the elevator with him, though Yuuri hadn't done more than given them a hesitant smile when they walked in. He fumbles in his pocket and brings out his phone for some much-needed light.] It looks like we're stuck here for now. How long do these blackouts usually last?
