riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

prompt v: wildcard

Choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

I'll handle it. ['Handle' is another nice word for 'kill', apparently, judging from the way he pops out the empty clip of his rifle and loads a new one into it with a practiced, unbothered motion. He's looking toward the direction the runner nods at, listening for its path of movement as it approaches - clumsy, noisily. The good thing about this creatures is at least they think they're the scariest things in the dark - they aren't. They're pretty simple-minded, relying more on numbers than strategy.

He cocks the rifle and doesn't spare the other man another glance just yet, standing with the air of a predator lying in wait.]
Yuri Plisetsky. Short, skinny, blond, has a temper. [The scrabbling is getting closer, and he lifts the rifle, staring through the sight.] He's armed, but not enough if he runs into a nest.
genice: (desperate | then i saw you)

[personal profile] genice 2017-03-29 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
( He tips his head forward in a nod of acknowledgement; choosing to have faith in a statement of ability instead of hold it in suspicion. He's run into many more competent people as a whole than incompetent; besides, he knows he's the one who doesn't have an offensive skillset to offer in this particular arena.

All those thoughts are abruptly sidelined as a very familiar name reaches his ears. Without thinking about it, Victor takes a step forward, reaching out to his temporary companion; he checks himself (don't tangle with someone geared up for a fight, even when thoroughly surprised) at the last second, fingers curling into a fist. Yurio?
)

Yuri's here?! In Riverview?

( Moreover, Yuri Plisetsky was a trainee of what smacks of a militant sort of instruction? It's not so completely unheard of, especially not where they're from, but it's such stark evidence of a shift in circumstances he doesn't bother hiding the flicker of distress across his features. Yuri's always been free to make his own choices in the face of his own life; fifteen or fifty-five, in Victor's eyes, the same would hold true.

It doesn't make it a restive thought. Risks of injury in a field like this are completely different than what they faced on the ice for competitive figure skating.
)

How long has he been here? ( Clarifying: ) In the city? How long has he been training with you?

[When they finally get a glimpse of the thing that has been tracking Victor, it's scrambling toward them with a shriek; Bucky pulls the trigger and it goes down heavily into the muck with a fresh bullet hole in its skull. He's not going to feel bad about that. He straightens and shoulders his rifle again, nodding down a branching-off tunnel.] If this sector isn't clear, you should get back up to your rendezvous point.

[He does take in, though, that Yuri's name rings a bell for this guy. Someone his wayward trainee knows? From home, he guesses. He wonders if that'll help with the kid's homesickness or not.] Friend of his? Yuri's been here a few weeks, same as me. [Bucky catches that flicker of distress, and sighs briefly.]

He wanted to learn to defend himself. He's doing well, but he was supposed to stay with his squad. Don't worry, I'll find him.
genice: (surprise | the quiet kind of shock)

[personal profile] genice 2017-03-31 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
( He flinches; his shoulders tense and shudder just the once with the rifle's shot. He glances back, expression carefully blank. Victor's more than capable of disguising his thoughts and feelings if he has a reason to, or does by default when he's simply too surprised to know what to think or feel. Right now, the distance is necessary.

Because he won't pretend there isn't a fission of worry for Yurio that leaves him tense and looking to Bucky. Accepting there's some measure of comfort in the fact Yuri won't be forgotten down here, though that's hardly a guarantee of his state of being. Victor won't expect miracles. Just hope for them.
)

We've been rinkmates for years. ( It's the other details he's registering, slowing down his replies. Yuri's been here a few weeks, same as me. Only Yuri had also been on the ship. Except... he reaches up to pinch the bridge of his nose for a moment, feeling a headache coming on. His hand drops away and he glances back over his shoulder.

Except there is more than one universe. Is there more than one possibility of the people he knows and cares about existing in similar, or even wildly different, realities? He knows Earth can. It would explain how Yuri could be here even when he wasn't only here. It's a thought he keeps to himself, focusing instead on the practical reality they're caught up in.
)

Thank you. I'd only started taking self defense in the last few months... circumstances change. I'm not surprised to hear he's been adapting.

( Even if in his heart of hearts it's nothing he would have wished on Yuri Plisetsky. He wants to see him succeeding and surpassing all expectations on ice, not taking to the battlefield.

But Yuri is his own person. Victor shifts his stance, voice pleasant, even in tone. He doesn't like any of this. He can shove that down as much as possible too.
)

Do we need to worry about disposal? Further unwanted guests?
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] head down)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-03-31 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Yuri won't be forgotten. Bucky is fond of the kid already, has to be if he's training him, working closely with him to hone his defensive skills. (Just his defensive skills, for now. He won't train any more killers.) He shoulders his rifle and motions down one of the tunnels, the one he knows will take them up to the surface the quickest. It won't take him long to play the escort, and then he can come back down and find his wayward trainee before he hands B-squad their asses.]

The carrion might bring other stragglers from when the nest scattered. I'll take you up to the exit. [He doesn't wait to see if Victor is following, just expects that he will be followed.]

He's still young, young people are adaptable. And I guess he felt he had to. There was a massive storm, when we came here, knocked out the power along parts of the perimeter fence. I don't know how he ended up out there fighting, but he wasn't bad then. He's getting better now, he's a hard-worker.
genice: (determined | pushing my bangs back)

[personal profile] genice 2017-04-02 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
( His expectation isn't wrong, though Victor finds himself snorting a little at the unstated expectation. Why it catches him offguard as almost amusing is...

... probably because of what he's wearing. He shakes that off too, but the moment of amusement was the levity that helps him focus on what else there is he needs to focus on without getting wrapped up in concerns he cannot address. To all of what's being said, he offers a noise of acknowledgement. It's information that he wants, and it's telling him part of what he needs to know. He knows without needing to hear it that Yuri is a hard worker. Has been, though he really pushed himself after realising his own lacks this last season.

Which he supposes has happened all over again. He runs a hand through his hair as he keeps pace, leaving his palm against his forehead.
)

He usually has been. What's your name?
anotheroldsoldier: (suspicious side eye)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-02 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Bucky leads the way through the tunnels, heading in the direction of the exit generally. Though, at one point, he pauses at a turn, and when he hears noise down the side of the fork he'd planned to take, he turns them down a small side tunnel instead. He doesn't want to engage with the monsters if he can help it while he's got a noncombatant following him.]

Bucky Barnes. You are? Yuri hasn't mentioned a lot of people from home.
genice: (neutral | did not see you there)

[personal profile] genice 2017-04-02 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
( Not surprising to hear Yuri hasn't mentioned much about people back home; if anything, Victor would pin him missing his grandfather most, simply based on importance. He has a general idea of where they're heading, which is reassuring; though he only hears why Bucky had avoided one turn in favour of another when he concentrates on what his ears can tell him.

Ah.
)

Victor Nikiforov. Good to meet you, Bucky.

( he sounds sincere enough, though he doesn't try shaking hands or doing more than keeping pace. it's really not the time for most pleasantries. )

Mm, but he's mentioned a few. Which, I wonder. His grandfather? Yakov? Lilia? ( another pause. ) Otabek?

( Or Yuuri, he wonders. Yuuri who had been as much of a jumping point for Yuri to get serious in the senior division as anything else. )
anotheroldsoldier: ([cap] ceiling cap)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-05 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
[Bucky just grunts his acknowledgement of the introduction. He's not the personable type even when he isn't laser-focused on his work, not one for pleasantries in general.

He sounds slightly distracted as they turn into a side access tunnel, dimly lit. Sparking wires dangle from the ceiling, a piece of machinery chewed upon by nesting creatures.]

His grandfather and his coach, and I think he's mentioned his ballet teacher. Just them, far as I know. [Sorry you guys apparently don't rate. Yuri is a prickly child, he's learned that much about him in the short time they've known each other. He kind of likes it.]
genice: (consider | what to do next)

[personal profile] genice 2017-04-08 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
( Victor finds himself smiling... inwardly. That's the list he'd named, minus Otabek. It makes sense to him, personally, knowing who's been most immediately there supporting Yuri this season. He's glad those bonds have strengthened — that Yuri has relied on others, and been able to allow himself to be relied on in turn.

That's noting Victor could have taught him. Not with how their relationship worked; in a way, he judges it to be to Yakov and Lilia's credit (Nikolai as well) that Yuri has been so aggressively coping with his life here in Riverview.
)

Sounds about right for Yuri.

( Is all the comment he makes, sidestepping any water when he's seeing sparking wires. He has no idea how much rubber is in his shoes; he doesn't plan to find out the hard way. A burst of sparks overhead has him ducking a little, arm up to protect his head. Goodness... )

Has there been much trouble that you've heard about related to repaired sections coming under renewed pest attack?
anotheroldsoldier: (hmmm)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-09 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Bucky spares the sparking wires a couple of glances, carefully sidestepping. His suit is insulated, but he doesn't want to risk shorting out his arm or something disastrous like that.] The sudden activity in the areas under repair sometimes bring down stragglers from the scattered nests. I've been mostly on guard duty - two of my floormates are on the engineering team, so I've seen a fair bit of it.

[And he'll have to mark this section down for Michael or Tony to come take another look at.]
genice: (consider | what to do next)

[personal profile] genice 2017-04-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
( He makes a noise in acknowledgement, considering all the work that goes into making sure systems like these are up and running. He wonders, vaguely, if there's any trouble with cables being cut by careless diggers; how much renovation is done in the city, or how many buildings are knocked down and rebuilt from the ground up. How prohibitive that may or may not be.

They're idle thoughts. He lets them all slip by as they move forward.
)

I can imagine. They've had me running supplies, but I'm not supposed to be sticking around long enough to see much of anything. ( Nothing he objects to, regardless of whatever curiosity lingers. ) Is there much of a... what's the word I want. Hm... Field guide? For this moon?
anotheroldsoldier: (side)

[personal profile] anotheroldsoldier 2017-04-13 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
[He hefts his rifle again, going still and silent when an echoing screech drifts down the tunnel from several yards ahead. It's either a fight taking place or a creature coming their way; either way, Bucky would prefer to get Victor to the exit quick and then come back down. He's on a mission to find Yuri, after all, and only then can he get back to general work.]

You might be better off helping aboveground. Or in another sector. Pass on to the guard captains that James Barnes has declared this section unsafe for noncombatants. [He's search and rescue, not technically in charge of anyone, but he likes to think he's gathering respect in his time working with the Perimeter Guard.]

If you want a field guide, try the bookstores. The locals are pretty free with what they do know, but there's a lot they don't still.
genice: (Default)

[personal profile] genice 2017-04-13 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)

Mm. I'll pass along the information.

( He agrees easily enough, head cocked to the side as he listens to another burst of hissing activity that may or may not be their predatory friends from behind, further down the tunnel system. Sidestepping around another puddle, he adjusts a strap on his pack to bring it flush against his back once more. )

I'll check out the bookstores. See if there's any decent online references, too.

( simple statements on simple matters: these are things that are easy enough for him to do. books simply but out the need for a technological connection. nonetheless, he falls into an easy (to him) silence, listening and moving without hesitation as they find their way to the checkpoint. thankfully without incident, so it seems, as the light and sound of those women and men up ahead catch Victor's ears; his eyes flick toward James, then straight ahead. they have half a length of a tunnel to get to the checkpoint. )
