riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

i. lifestyles of the rich and the famous
[ bruce wayne has never had the need to use public transportation.

he certainly lacks any desire after this.

the seats on the tram are worn. the windows could use a good washing. a smell not unlike smoke lingers. and when it shudders to a slow and then a stop in the middle of the street, bruce almost expects to try the doors and find them — yes, they are locked.
]

Efficient.

ii. hit me with your best shot
[ feel free to wildcard anything or pm me for a starter! except friendr. he will never install friendr. because he refuses to have friends. ]

[ The power's been cut to this entire city block, the incoming swarm is moving up on him fast, and it really comes down to luck that Dick spots the kid at all on his way to the opposite roof. A small, indistinct figure in the car, hovering by the door. Damn it.

But there's nothing for it. No other way. Escrima sticks out, he barrels through the window in a spectacular shower of breaking glass, taking a chunk of the sill with him. He still manages a fairly graceful landing in the aisle, keeping the sticks in his hands as he turns to look for the boy. There's no time. ]

Don't worry, kid, help is on- oh... [ He's had Clark to deal with, and then Jason. Jason, of all people, years older than he should be. That it's Bruce in the flesh, small and helpless, trapped in the last tram in the world a hand's breath away from disaster shouldn't be the punch straight to the gut that it is.

Bruce. He knows it's Bruce. Wearing a face he'd never known, and yet it's one he'd know anywhere.

To Dick's credit, the naked shock is smoothed away in a heartbeat (thank Jason for that, tbh), and the gloved hand he lifts in greeting is offered without a missed beat. ]

[ in the list of priorities at present, questions regarding aposiopesis rank fairly low. lower than what are you supposed to be and certainly lower than why did you throw yourself through a window.

bruce staggered away when he caught sight of the shadow charging the tram out the corner of his eye. startled, he backs up several more steps. broken shards of glass litter the aisle and the seats, but none reached him. ( he doesn't think to consider that had been deliberate. ) even through his confusion and concern, something imperious remains in his tone when bruce demands,

[personal profile] fingerstripes 2017-04-16 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ With that reproach comes an automatic little twinge of guilt, which is definitely something he's really going to need to start working on from here on out. He shakes the feeling off, sheathing the escrimas in his hands and taking a step back towards the window. Bruce has never liked surprises. He's never liked seeing his space encroached on. ]

...Yeah, about that-

I'm sure this is all coming as a bit of a shock, but it's- [ He's stumbling already- ]

We're in a bad position. But if you hang onto me, I can get us both out. [ It's the only piece that really matters. He holds his hand out.

Not that he... isn't prepared to grab the kid and haul him out by force if he has to, but this will probably end a little better for both of them if Bruce will at least agree to the necessity. ]

[personal profile] conceptualise 2017-04-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ a bad position? bruce looks out the window again, but sees nothing. nothing but a darkened city block. potentially unsafe, yes. were he in gotham still, he would know it to be unsafe.

turning back to the stranger in a costume ( when did this become a new normal? ) bruce frowns. the man doesn't seem to be lying. a flicker of fear pinches bruce's belly.
]

Why? What's happening out there?

[personal profile] fingerstripes 2017-04-16 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There's, uh- there's been a break in. Through one of the fences. [ The fear he sees in Bruce is like a fist on his heart. He can't help him if he lets that get to him.

This is Bruce. Bruce needs evidence. A reason. A certainty that the risk of trust outweighs the risk in any other alternative. He takes a breath. ]

...The power's been cut to this section of the city. That's why the train stalled out. And there's a chance we'll be caught in the rush if we don't clear the street.

It's going to be okay, but we need to act now.

[ dick grayson: wayne whisperer.

bruce doesn't take the proffered hand. his eyes flick again outside, then back to the man. he weighs, and he comes to a decision. he dips his chin in the barest motion of a nod.
]

Lead the way.

[ it is readily apparent when he moves forward that dick may have his acquiescence, but not his trust. bruce keeps himself just out of arm's reach; he motions for dick to exit the tram first; blue eyes regard his would-be savior as shrewdly as they take in the surroundings.

he steps carefully over glass, and hoists himself out the shattered window. the coat lifts behind him like a cape when he drops. outside, he waits for his cue from dick.

[ Dick lets him set the boundary there, keeping his distance as he follows Bruce out into the street. The silence is heavy. The darkness feels suddenly tangible, a thousand possible threats needling at his skin from all sides. Alone he can fight off dozens, maybe hundreds. Alone he can fight for hours. Can he do it while protecting a frightened, untrusting child?

If he loses him- ]

Not too much farther. [ It's actually a whole lot farther, but he's going for positive reinforcement. He flashes the kid what he hopes is a reassuring grin and holds his arm out to show off the grapple gun attached. ]

You up for trying the roof? We'll be a lot safer there.
conceptualise: (denominator.)

[personal profile] conceptualise 2017-04-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ were he to judge the truthfulness of that, he must first know where they're going. unsmiling in return, bruce glances at the tool on his arm without recognition. based on the parts he can see, and the offer, bruce can surmise its purpose. rather than move closer to dick, he heads toward one of the buildings. ]

I can climb. [ weeks spent under the ( surprisingly strict and unsparing ) tutelage of selina kyle, he doesn't just know how to climb. but those are skills bruce opts to keep to himself. finding a hold, bruce hoists himself up. he doesn't have selina's finesse or her ease that makes her seem closer to the cat for which she is nicknamed. but he does have the experience of scrambling up and down gotham's buildings chasing after her.

it helps that what bruce lacks in adeptness he makes up for in sheer stubbornness.

and, more importantly, a roof will give him a vantage point from which to gauge this threat for himself. as he climbs, he looks behind him only once to see if his rescuer is following.

[ Well color him a little surprised.

But then again, maybe he shouldn't be. It's starting to occur to him now, with a slow, chilling sense of helplessness, how little he really has to work with here. How little he knows about this part of Bruce's life. For all that he'd asked, pestered, and even begged over the years, the few stories he knows are thin and spare. Absent the lived-in details that would have given them shape. ]

-Wow. Alright, nevermind. [ Well, one thing he's sure of, no kid this age likes a hovering fusspot. Without another glance back he makes quick work of the wall, skipping the grapple and pulling himself up and onto the nearby fire escape. From there he closes the distance in a few neat, fairly unshowy flips, then assumes a perch on the edge of the roof. It's the best spot to deploy the grapple if Bruce needs it. The best spot to try and look as if he's doing anything other than watching and waiting for him to fall.

How old can he possibly be now? Thirteen? Fourteen?

Tim's age. God. ]

Give me a shout out if you need a hand. We should have a few minutes depending on...

[ Well. ]
conceptualise: (fission.)

[personal profile] conceptualise 2017-04-22 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ wow, dick. he's gotham's little prince, not useless. ( talk to selina for a more honest assessment. )

bruce wordlessly pulls himself up to the ledge, and drops his feet onto the roof. his eyes are narrowed as he shifts his focus between dick and the city. despite his best intentions, he's impressed by the other's ease scaling up the building. he might even be better than selina, something which bruce is never, ever letting her know.

there's nothing to be seen yet. the city is dark and quiet in its outage. it only makes him more homesick; bruce cannot imagine gotham ever being this quiet.

bruce turns over one question he wants to ask — where did you learn to do that — and swaps it for ones more highly prioritized.
]

Who are you? [ suspicion sharpens his gaze. the other knows him. it's not so surprising. he is, after all, bruce wayne. but someone who knows him, who will run around in a masked costume, capable of bursting through a window without apparent harm to himself, then practically waltz his way up a building?

he knows of only a handful of organizations capable of such. none takes kindly to him.
]

[ Bruce knows. Dick risks a look and it's a mistake, because the moment he meets that sharp gaze that's what he sees. Every half-baked lie he'd been working on dies inside him. Bruce will know.

Maybe it's better this way. Maybe. He takes a breath. ]

...That sit-down you had with the people in charge here. Where they explained the whole... alternate reality thing? [ He's just going to silently pray right now that Bruce didn't skip out on orientation. ]

I'm from... one of those other realities. From another version of Gotham. [ There's no real way to know that for sure yet, but it's probably best to start there. It speaks to separation. A distance. Not an inevitability in the life of a boy barely into his teens.

He needs Bruce to listen. ]

[It's the tram coming to a sudden and jolting stop that rouses Damian from where he'd been dozing on one of the benches and he sits up with a frown, rubbing the sleep from his eyes and pushing back his jacket's hood from where it had been pulled down over his forehead. That he had been able to sleep on this thing at all is a testament to the fact that perhaps he has been pushing himself too much, but that's hardly a thought he cares to linger on. Instead he's much more focused on figuring out what exactly had brought the tram to a stop.

Annoyance already building, he stands from his seat and begins to make his way up. The tram is fairly empty, but for another boy—teenager really—and Damian gives him a cursory glance out of the corner of his eyes before coming to a full stop, jaw falling open just a little.

After everything that he's been through, being tossed from one universe to another and even dealing with the mess of multiverse walls collapsing at home, Damian is honestly surprised anything can still shock him. And yet, it's without a doubt shock that crashes over him at the sight of the familiar (older) face. (He doesn't even think at the irony of being surprised that Bruce is too old and not too young.) If anyone asks later, he'll tell them he assessed the situation with a clear head and approached Bruce as carefully as possible, mindful of the fact that despite appearances, there was no way of knowing who this particular Bruce was.
]

Why are you old? [Later, he will blatantly deny any claims from other parties about blurting out the first thing that came to mind. He will certainly deny any feelings of envy at Bruce's height and age that may have factored into said hypothetical exclamations.

But seriously, what the fuck multiverse?

[The choked off sound that ensues is the result of Damian being too appalled by the (intentional?) irony to properly voice the immediate invective that springs to his lips. The reprimand doesn't offend, but he's irritated that it doesn't give him an answer. He'd have thought Bruce's first reaction would tell him what he needed to know.

Turns out he can't tell if Bruce is sassing him because he does know him, or if he's just being a difficult asshole. (And okay it's possible if he doesn't know Damian he may have taken offense at the abrupt comment, but that's hardly his fault.
]

No. He's setting a terrible example for me. I'll be sure to tell him the next time I see him. [Turns out sass is hereditary.

Damian shifts his weight to one side, the only tell that in spite of his collected demeanor he's antsy to figure this out.
