riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

trashmammal: (and stay there if you have to)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-21 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I like it out here. Thanks though.

[She needs the fresh air and the platforming, helps clear her head. Still, there's something at least a little tempting about that offer.]

Is it cool if I just sit here for a minute, though? Legs are killing me.

Okay then.

[ Mia nods energetically to the question. Please kitty stay here with her. She's quickly realizing Mae is a lot more than a cat though. ]

I was just having some tea. Would you like some? Do you, um, drink tea? I think I have some milk too...

[ Is this rude?? Help??? ]

trashmammal: (and see the ugly world that spat you out)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-21 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
[She settles herself down on the sill as gently as she can, legs dangling over the edge. Lots of flat ground down there. Could probably survive a fall from up here, she thinks.]

Yknow I've actually never had tea before? Like, coffee just makes me all sleepy so I guess I never tried it.

So yeah, tea would be good!

[If the milk is supposed to be a cat thing she doesn't really catch it, cause milk is a thing that goes in tea, right? That happens.]
exter: (z02)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-21 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Never ever? That's a shame. Here, it'll be a moment.

[ She turns around and quickly walks over to the kitchenette, where the boiling water still rests on the teapot. Her own tea is way too strong for her to feel comfortable sharing (first impressions matter!) so she picks something softer for Mae. ]

Would you like to have some milk with it, or just the tea? It's just for added sweetness' sake, really.

[ And now she's thinking about the soda crackers she just bought. ]
trashmammal: (on your way up to the light)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-21 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
[YES, suspicion confirmed! Mae twists her head around to get a better look at Mia doing... whatever the hell you're supposed to do with tea. Roast it? Boil it? Whatever.]

Sweet's fine! I dunno if I could take it bitter anyway.

[Yknow what? This is cool. She's hanging out, she's making new friends. Just for a second, it seems like everything's gonna be okay.]
exter: (z01)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-21 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Much of a tea snob that Mia is, she uses the common teabags from the nearby store. Now, if someone can find her cool leaves to boil...

She simply nods without stopping to check if Mae actually sees the gesture. A few moments later she's back with a cup of steaming, cream colored tea and she hands it over with a big smile to her new cat-person-lady-friend.

Seriously though, Mia is probably the easiest person to befriend as long as you're not trying to gut her.
]

Here you go. It's a bit hot, so drink carefully. I'm Mia, by the way. Mia Hawthorne.
trashmammal: (play with matches)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-21 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

[Thankfully Mae has pretty much zero interest in taking anybody's guts out, so they should get along okay. She takes the cup in both hands, laying her back against the windowframe, looking a little more relaxed than before. The feeling in her head hasn't left yet, but it's not as bad now.]

Mae Borowski. Is my name, I mean.
exter: (z03)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-21 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Mae is my sister's name too.

[ Ain't that cool? Not really, Mia considers after a moment, since there's so many people in the world...worlds...still, it's a nice coincidence. ]

So, have you been here long? I just got here.
trashmammal: (and stay there if you have to)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-21 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[It is kind of a funny coincidence, and Mae (the Mae sitting outside Mia's window, not her sister) gives a little "hmm" of recognition. She takes a cautious sip of tea, singing her tongue on wincing before the question actually sinks in.]

Dunno. A week, I think? I do a lot of sleeping. [Not as much as she did back home, either.] It's kind of a whole lot to adjust to.
exter: (Default)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
You sleep a lot because you like it, or because you need to?

[ Either way she won't judge. Mia tends to sleep way more than necessary at times, but that's more on the side of "crippling depression" than need or anything. ]

It really is. I'm still not sure this isn't some dream that's getting scarily long winded by now.
trashmammal: (find limits past the limits)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think both? I don't know.

[Just gonna very carefully step around any implications that may have. Mia seems cool and they just met and please God Mae don't start dumping all your baggage on her at once.]

Nah. My dreams get way weirder than this usually. I think I might've actually met God, the one time?
exter: (z02)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm quite familiar with the feeling of being too tired after sleeping half a day, don't worry.

[ She's a psychiatrist. She's the best person for that sort of stuff. ]

Really? There are things back home that are claimed to be gods of some sort, although it might be a problem of translation.

[ she's actually kind of one of them! Not that she knows. ]
trashmammal: (open up your ugly mouth)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-22 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
[She's honestly not sure whether to be relieved that someone understands, or embarrassed that knew what she was talking about right away. Maybe both? Yeah, let's go with both.]

"Gods" as in more than one? What're they like?
exter: (Default)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-22 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
As I said, probably a translation issue. They are... well, it's difficult to explain. Their very existence tends to warp time and space around them, so...

[ Big shrug! You never know with eldritch abominations. ]
trashmammal: (find limits past the limits)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-22 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh God. Oh God, she knows exactly what she's talking about, and that recognition sends a bolt of dread shooting down her spine. Her posture doesn't change much, but her grip on her teacup tightens like a vice.]

That's... I think I understand. It's hard to get all the right words for it.

[Her head hurts just thinking about it. Something about an absence, something that was there and just isn't anymore. A hole in the center.]
exter: (Default)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Or any words. Usually it's just awe and distrust.

[ She'll have to tell Mae someday that she's already talking to one of such, kinda. But not today. Not for a while. ]

You really don't want to step in? Or we can go to the roof, breathe some air.
trashmammal: (let people call you crazy)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-23 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
[She considers it for a couple seconds, which is admittedly way longer than Mae usually thinks about anything, and nods.]

Yeah, okay.

[With that, she slips off the sill and into Mia's house and it only hits her just now how awkward this whole thing is. Holy shit she just laned on this lady's window and now she's tracking mud all over her house and is she supposed to sit down somewhere oh God please help her.]

You... have a lovely home! [She says, just standing there with her cup and not moving an inch.]
exter: (z03)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool.

[ Mia flutters about the place, which isn't neither big nor impressive and certainly doesn't reach lovely levels by any means necessary. ]

Ah, it's kind of whatever they threw in for me. I'm not sure if I want to think about moving somewhere nicer once I make money, mostly because the whole thing involves settling and working and- yeah. I could use a nicer space for my practice, though.

[ All in good time, really. Mia notices Mae isn't moving, so she gives the back of the cat's head a soft pat. She would need to kneel down to touch her back, so yeah that's what she gets. ]

I at least have couches and stuff, let's go.
trashmammal: (for the choices that you make)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
["Lovely" is relative, 'cause her own housing is kind of a huge pigsty, but that's nobody's fault but her own.

The pat takes her by complete surprise, and she tenses up enough to almost spill piping hot tea all over herself and the floor. Which, while not the worst thing that could happen, would still suck hardcore. Another little disaster avoided. Way to go, Mae. It gets her moving, too, which is a plus, treading semi-cautiously across the floor towards... wherever Mia's supposed to be leading her.
]

What're you practicing? Sounds doctor-y.
exter: (Default)

[personal profile] exter 2017-03-26 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm psychiatrist!

[ There's some pride in her voice, but she ends up shrugging. In her experience, people tend to receive those news in many different ways. ]

Suffice to say, I feel a bit useless at the moment.
