riverview: test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on April 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Since this particular TDM is plot-heavy, current players are welcome to do their own top-levels to interact with the plot. However, since it is still a TDM intended to help potential new players get involved, there will be a special additional +25 Activity Point bonus for any thread submitted by a current player that involves a potential new character rather than focusing on existing CR, for this TDM post.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go. Thanks to player-created plots, this month's Test Drive is set to effect the game setting for the next few months, so please enjoy!

plot overview

After just over a week of increasingly serious blackouts and brownouts around the city, the team in charge of the structural integrity and defense of the wall has found the source of the problem, and posted a network entry explaining that the issue is caused by a large quantity of lizard-like monsters that have compromised the underground infrastructure of the city, and requesting volunteers to help do a full-scale manual extermination of monsters and assess the damage and do urgent repairs.

prompt i: a call to arms

The most urgent request presented is for people to help clear out the monsters in the underground tunnels - and there are a lot of them! With estimated monster numbers in the area of 500-1000, ranging from adult to juvenile, there's a lot of work to be done to clear out the underground infrastructure of the city. The Perimeter Guard will have a steady stream of transport trucks going to escort any fight-capable residents who want to volunteer out to the tunnels. They will also provide weapons of various varieties as well as short training sessions on how to use them safely in a confined space for anyone who doesn't have their own.

Whether you fight with a weapon, your fists, magic, or poison darts, your help is more than welcome down in the tunnels. The only real request is to keep seismic or explosive abilities or attacks on the mild side, and to be careful not to poison the city's water supply! Other than that, go wild.

prompt ii: into the depths

Clearing out monsters is all well and good, but they have definitely done some damage to the city's infrastructure. So it isn't just the brawn that needs to step up to help the city, it's the brains. There's a call for anyone with any kind of special ability that would help with emergency repairs. Whether it's engineers, chemists, anyone with first aid, runners to distribute supplies, or any other special ability that would help out in the underground tunnels and fix some of the damage that's been done, anyone is welcome to help. And if you think it's just scientists who are needed, think again - magic is a well-known if not-well-understood facet of life in Riverview Quarantine, and some of this stuff works on a more arcane level than a mundane one.

And, of course, all of these brainiacs are going to need a little backup, so any bruisers to act as escort and protection are also welcome.

prompt iii: trapped in a...

Not everyone has the skills or desire to head out into the jungle and fight for the city, and that's perfectly fine. Inside the Quarantine walls, life is carrying on as normally as it can. That is, aside from the ongoing blackouts.

Wherever you might be in the city, you run a pretty decent risk of getting trapped somewhere for a short period of time. Whether it's trapped in an elevator, a tram car, a store, the housing you share with someone you barely know, or anywhere else in the city, it could happen to you. This could be the start of a beautiful friendship or a meet-cute to tell your grandkids about...at least, that is, if you get along with the person you're stuck with...

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a new, free app is popping up on people's devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

[Okay there are exactly two things that noise could be coming from. It's either a) a valiant and probably super cool rescue team coming to save her from this terrible hell box, or b) a monster here to chomp her whole entire face off. At this point Mae is equally ready for both of those. She scrambles to her feet just in time to see somebody's head poking in through the hatch and oh thank God they're not here to murder here.

She can't really place the accent but it sounds... British-ish?
]

Nothing, forget about it. Now c'mon, pull me up! Let's blow this joint!

[Who the hell even says "joint" anymore? Mae sure does apparently, throwing her arms up and hopping up an down for this hooded weirdo to grab on.]

[ And just like that, that perplexed expression is gone, replaced by something much brighter and perhaps a bit amused. If Etan can speak and sing, what's a talking feline, particularly one with a bit of spirit to her? Promising, that's what. ]

I assume that means this thing is stuck. Pity. I was rather enjoying myself.

[ Elevator surfing, not that she knows full well what that is. Her entire reason for being inside the space was to figure out how it worked. Discovering the fun had been a plus, but there's not much of that to be had now. Weird dialect, though. Sparing their pending trek an upward glance, she'll be leaning in a bit and reaching down to grab a paw and hoist the unfortunate box rider up perhaps a bit too easily. ]

Come on, then. I don't know about blowing anything, but there's no point in staying now. How well can you climb?

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-21 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh shit, was she just outside the elevator the whole time? If so, that might just be the single coolest thing Mae's heard all day, and the idea of it is enough to get her pumped as hell. Taking this badass hooded strangers hand (and being super extra careful not to scratch her), she hauls herself up onto the roof with a grunt.]

Whoof! Thanks for the save.

[She follows her gaze upwards, already trying to work out a route in her head. Plenty of cables in arm's reach, some decent footholds, maybe a service ladder further up. She scrambled up onto both feet, tapping her boot against the elevator, just to see if it wasn't gonna come crashing down with them on it.]

Climbing? Sister, you are speaking my language. What do you think, all the way up to the roof? I dunno if I can get any of these doors open.

It's no trouble, stranger.

[ And an enthusiastic shake of her head confirms that well enough. Then, she's looking up again, resting a hand on her hip. It can't be any more difficult a climb than scaling the great trees of the forests back home. Plenty to work with, that's for sure. As for how high they should go -- ]

I can get the doors open, but the roof sounds like more fun if you ask me. We'd get a view and maybe a better idea of just how big this place really is. What do you say?
trashmammal: (on your way up to the light)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-22 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Mae. My name's Mae.

[She adopts the same stance almost unconsciously, both hands planted on her hips, nodding like this is a totally normal thing that people do casually. She's never climbed anything this tall, but it should be no big, right? What's a few extra stories?]

I say we have ourselves a roof party! It shouldn't be that far from here actually. C'mon!

[With that, she grabs the nearest cable and gets to climbing. It's slow at first, just one hand over the other, but soon she's picking up speed, switching from rope-climbing to balancing on jutting pieces of machinery and whatever footholds she can find. Whether or not this lady can catch up isn't really her problem, at this point.]

Líadan.

[ It's a fair exchange and she's pleased for it. She tends to have good luck with people who have names on the shorter end of things. Mae's enthusiasm earns a fair laugh from Lí, who nods in agreement. ]

A roof party it is. I'll race you to the top!

[ She might not win as it takes her a moment to get comfortable with a cable of her own, but she won't be too far behind once she gains her bearings. It's different from climbing the great trees. The lack of moss and potentially angry birds is helpful when attempting to navigate available footholds, though. She'll pause a moment to observe Mae, nodding once, twice before she makes another jump. Upward and onward, upward and on. ]

You're really good at this, you know. If you don't beat me, I'll be surprised!
trashmammal: (find limits past the limits)

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-23 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I have a lotta practice.

[Possum Springs is the most Small Town small town there is, but there's plenty of shit to jump around and climb on. The powerlines and those big brick towers around Towne Centre and holy shit Mae you were having a good time stop thinking of home already! It throws her focus off just enough to miss a foothold by what she swears has gotta be an inch and then...

she's falling. The shaft starts to rush past in a grey blur and everything feels weightless.
]

No! Nonononononono!!
leadintheyoung: (pic#11143559)

i hope this is ok!

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-03-23 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ And Líadan's head will be snapping up with that first 'no,' after which she's quick to make an equally snappy decision to propel herself from her foothold and jump for the cable closest to the center. Small as Mae is, she might miss her otherwise and she's not exactly sure how resilient her companion is. That's not exactly something she wants to test right now, for that matter. The hand grasping the cable definitely feels the couple of feet she slides down even as she snakes a hand out to catch Mae. The waist or the leg is her aiming and -- ]

Got you!

[ -- is she going to feel that in the morning? Well, probably not. It's nothing a healing spell can't fix, but boy, if it isn't going to burn a bit in the meantime. Not her immediate concern, though. Her immediate concern lies with -- ]

Mae, talk to me. Are you well? [ Say you are, say you are. ]
trashmammal: (find limits past the limits)

you're good!

[personal profile] trashmammal 2017-03-23 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[It takes a minute to register that someone actually caught her, that she's not just a weird-looking smear on top of the elevator. Okay, the fall wasn't actually that far, but she probably would've broken something important. Lia's got a pretty good grip on her leg, right below the knee, and she's left dangling there in her grasp, the momentum knocking her head against the wall briefly.]

Ho. Lee. Shit.

[Did...did this lady just save her life? It sure looks that way, which means Mae could've potentially died there, but between the adrenaline pumping through her and the fading tingle of excitement she can't find it in her to care. That was awesome.]

Yeah, I'm good! Could you let me back up, though? Blood's starting to rush to my head!
leadintheyoung: (pic#11143439)

[personal profile] leadintheyoung 2017-03-24 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Well, that's a relief and Lí is pretty quick to oblige, lifting Mae up carefully and drawing her a mite closer to the cable so she can get a handle on it and find herself a good foothold again. She'll start looking for one of those herself in a moment if only so she can tear a bit of fabric to wrap her hand in for the rest of the climb. ]

That I can. I'll take a closer look at you once we're out of this space. Do you still want to go for the roof or would you rather I open the doors?

[ Trusting Mae to know her limits? Why, yes, she is trusting Mae to know her limits. Most people do, don't they? And she's not hearing or seeing much in the way that would suggest otherwise, so. Doors or roof, what's it gonna be? ]
