riverview: april test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on May 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: baiting the behemoth

Recently, a team of skilled explorers went out into the jungle to the Northwest of the city to follow up on several sightings of a giant lizardlike behemoth that's been skulking around outside the walls, a creature whose level of aggression (and therefore how dangerous it might be) was unknown. The team, while not exactly as stealthy as they were supposed to be, did manage to find the creature, which they found to have about the intelligence and temperament of a very, very, very large dog. And whom they named Liam.

Having established that the behemoth (which is around the size of a blue whale, snakelike in shape, but with four legs, brown striated scales, large claws and teeth, bad breath, and an affinity for face-licking) is not an intentional danger to the city, the authorities could not rule out the idea that it might cause accidental damage to the city, walls, or crops around the city. As a result, research has been done and a new mission has been drafted and recruited for - baiting the behemoth. The objective of this large-scale mission is for many small, quick-moving teams to take behemoth bait deep into the jungle for the purpose of luring the massive but mostly-harmless creature away from the city and hopefully to a new, less-inhabited feeding area. There is room for many different teams, and all of them should be heading deep into the jungle heading directly away from the city, going Northwest. The authorities in question have come up with a wide variety of food and pheromone scented lures that range from mild to truly stinky, so which type your team gets is up to you.

Each lure is small enough to fit in a cage-shaped canister that can be carried like a backpack by one person with average strength, and each lure-carrier will need to be accompanied by at least one or two fighters. Why, when the behemoth is peaceful? Well....

prompt ii: pest control service

The behemoth might not be aggressive, but unfortunately it's picked up some unwelcome companions. After last month's near-disaster where a colony of lizardlike monsters had taken up residence in tunnels under the city, wreaking havoc in the power grid, and were subsequently either killed or flushed out of the underground, some of the local fauna has been bumped down the food chain.

The fauna in question is a very large pack of mammalian six-limbed creatures that usually live in the trees and hunt oversized insects in the underbrush. When the lizards escaped the underground into the surrounding jungle, and drastically reduced the population of the insects the mammals usually feed on, the predators became parasites, attacking the only thing left that is more docile than the insects they usually feed on - the behemoth. These creatures are quick-moving, well-camouflaged in the jungle with mottled brown-and-green fur, and sport massive teeth and long tongues that allow them to stick to whatever surface they land on.

Hungry as they are, they will make no distinction between the behemoth's juicy hide and the lure-carrying teams that are trying to help it. Hopefully, their ranks can be thinned enough that the behemoth survives the trip to its new home.

prompt iii: rainbow bite

Not everyone is cut out for missions into the jungle or cleaning up angry predatory parasite monsters, but that doesn't mean that staying home means being safe from the weird things that come out of the portal. In the early morning of April 20th, drawn by the warmth of the rising sun, a massive swarm of rainbow-colored fireflies emerges from the portal into the quarantine. Unlike regular fireflies, though, they are bright enough to glow even during the day, and these bugs have bite! While generally harmless aside from stinging a little, the bite of the rainbow fireflies causes certain kinds of emotional response to become heightened, depending on the color of the firefly in question. While scientists have never run into these bugs before and have no idea how it works, they can cause this effect in any kind of sentient creature that is capable of emotion, including androids and characters that are usually unaffected by substances. The effects on emotions are as follows:

● RED: Lust/Anger
● ORANGE: Honesty/Openness
● YELLOW: Fear/Anxiety
● GREEN: Jealousy/Envy
● BLUE: Sadness/Grief
● VIOLET: Love/Affection

When a character is bitten, the effects on their emotions can last anywhere from an hour to a week, depending on the character's psychology and resistance to certain emotions - for example, if a character has a hard time dealing with their grief, the effect of a blue firefly may last longer than other colors. How the characters manifest the heightened emotional response or sensitivity is up to the individual player, as different body chemistry or other circumstances might change how characters are affected. Red firefly bites have a 50/50 chance of affecting a character with lust or anger, though characters who have not reached sexual maturity (underage characters) won't get get the lust effect.

Firefly effects can be easily avoided simply by avoiding the fireflies. It won't take long for some of the geniuses in the Quarantine to start making and distributing firefly repellent, and characters can expect sales of mosquito tents to skyrocket.

These alien fireflies have a lifespan of around a month, and they are unable to procreate outside their native environment, which means the last of them will be dying off around May 20th.

CLARIFICATION: In response to a player question, the effects of the fireflies CAN layer, so they can be affected by more than one at the same time. Red fireflies with the lust effect don't make characters incapable of controlling themselves, just heighten feelings of arousal/desire.

prompt iv: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

"I meant more... annoying. But your point is taken." Merlin shook his head. He blew out a breath of air and stepped lively, keeping his eyes open. He had already been shown that some people here were more powerful, more knowledgeable than he. And this had been proven just a few moments ago. Now he just had to survive this and maybe he could learn something!

"Hm? Oh! I'm Merlin. Nice to meet you. Say... was that magic you did back there?" Or maybe some of this science he had been shown? Which, really, seemed a whole lot like magic to him. He kind of felt like it was magic, by another name, but he needed to think more on that, and so far, he had found himself in one situation after another where he didn't have the time to do so. That was, mind you, mostly his own fault, but still.

He sighed as he walked, thinking, waiting the other one's response.

What a strange question. She tilted her head in confusion, though her actual expression remained hidden by the mask, "yes, it was magic. What else could it have been?"

Not that she expected all magics to work the same way, but surely such obvious ones were easily recognizable as such. Subtle magics were far less flashy.

"Some forms of science, or so they call it, are pretty advanced. I thought it could be that, too. Ever since I arrived here, they keep telling me about science, and how it works. I'm no sure how much I believe them." He shook his head. He wasn't sure science was a real thing, even, but people kept claiming it was. People were weird. He had known that for a long time.

"But I'm glad to hear your powers are magic. Where did you learn them? Everything I know, I just... do." Merlin was sometimes frustrated by it. He had to have a reason for these powers, for them just springing up fully formed. Right?

Right. There had to be a reason. Now if he could only find that reason, he would be happy. Ish.

He shook his head as he heard movement in the bushes ahead. "Did you hear that? Something's out there."

"Everyone in Tamriel has some potential for using magic. Some races are more inclined than others. My race is, in general, much less prone to using it. My clan in specific, however, has always had more of a talent for it than the average orsimer. Where one learns depends on their culture. Mages colleges and Guild halls are common enough sights near the larger cities. Tribes often have their own shamans. My mother's hearth-wife taught me, as did the local treeminder," she answered easily even as she reached behind her to take her staff out. She wasn't so worried about anything that any come after them.

"Stay behind me. If it is dangerous I will hold it's attention off of you."

"Everyone? That is fantastic! If everyone could do magic, then maybe some people wouldn't hate it so much." He hated that there was tension about it back home. He didn't know why, exactly, but there was something having to do with a 'great' event, or adventure, or battle, some ten-to-thirty years prior. He was still confused on that part. But now the normal people feared and, in some cases, hated, magic.

"I wish I had known someone with it, to teach me when I was younger." That was so cool! Maybe he could learn from this wizard?

When the woman moved in front of him, he fell back, feeling bad about it, but doing it. Her magic seemed a lot stronger and more put together than his, and he was carrying the device. He kept looking around, trying to make sure nothing came from their off-sides.

"Okay. " he stretched. He wouldn't abandon her, but he knew they were not too far from the bait spot now. He considered moving faster for a moment and making a break for it. As if the things sensed his ideas, they erupted from the trees, or rather 'it' did.

Merlin had no idea what it was, as it seemed rather out of a nightmare, with a shape that seemed to defy description. "Holy shit." He didn't swear, but it seemed appropriate right now.

She would have answered his assumption about people not hating it, but the strange creature decided the bait was worth going after. Durzakh spun in place and slammed her staff down to create the line of ice between her and it. Miraculously (because she knew how to spin the spell) the frost that formed did not hinder Merlin's movement despite washing under his feet. She followed this with a deafening roar that drew the creature to her, to the point of ignoring Merlin entirely. Magic, of a sort, to keep it focused not on those who could take it down easily, but on the few who could endure it's attack until it did go down.

"If you know how to use you sword, do so! It will not care about you so long as I hold it here."
magicmishap: (Stalwart)

[personal profile] magicmishap 2017-04-24 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"You can do that? Cool!" He stared in amazement, then realized he had a mission to do. Right! Stare later, Merlin. Fight now.

Merlin nodded, dodging around the thing to give a slightly sloppy blow to its side, right above one leg. He sucked at using it, but the sword was very well made, and it cut into the tendons and ligaments holding the creature up, bringing a pain-filled roar from its mouth, and a buckling of that leg. Merlin dodged backward, doing his best to not get hit by flailing legs.

It was still concentrated on Durzakh, and lurched toward her on three legs, making Merlin black as he tried to cut some part of it with the blade, to do some damage.

He was not having much luck, and finally, he swore, charged, and slammed the point in as hard as he could, sinking the blade into the creature right above another leg. Maybe that would help?
thevoidbeckons: (Don't care)

[personal profile] thevoidbeckons 2017-04-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Keeping it's attention took a fair amount of focus. She couldn't cast as many spells at once while maintaining the rage she'd inspired within it since it took some concentration to keep that going. Staff spells were her only option really. Unless she decided to drop a meator on it and that, frankly, seemed just a little excessive.

Merlin taking out first one leg and then doing quite a bit of damage to the other was more than helpful. Not only did it hinder its ability yo properly charge, it also forced it into using only one front leg to swipe at her, having to balance now on the other. Her spell to raise it's anger to blinding levels prevented it from realizing just how much danger it was currently in.

"Release the sword and come take my staff! It's a frostcaller," she ordered, tossing it to the side and pulling two of the daggers at hips to start engaging the beast closer in. "Anyone can use it. Focus your thoughts on sending a blast of elemental energy through it and to the creature! Do it as many times as you must until it goes down!"

She had other weapons and he could use that one at a distance.

Merlin let go of the sword and raced to her side, grabbing the staff. He concentrated and energy seemed to pulse as he did so, flowing into the creature as he hung on to the staff. He concentrated and felt the cold elements at a distance, having never used cold magic and studied it as he tried to send blast after blast of elemental energy into the beast. He was really hoping that this worked as he waited to see what his companion would do.

Frost power felt different from air and water, which was all he had really used before, and not really used so much as just let happen. Firepower also just happened, but less often. "This is amazing! I've never felt anything like this!" It felt like what he had always imagined the Sidhe staff to be. He had heard about that staff, but never seen it, and this staff felt magical, and he wondered now if that would be similar.
