riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

Yeah. Then again, I didn't get airlifted by a prehistoric relic.

Yes, (she says, coldly, and looks away. Because you were wrong.)

But you don't have to die again, Taako. I only need you to help me reclaim the relics- the final go against the Hunger is my fight. If anybody has to die for keeps, it will be me. (And she's fine with that, she realizes. She is more than fine with paying the price for what she's done. She owes this world- her friends- that much at least.

She wants to be alone so badly. Looking at Taako and having him see her like this is so painful, and she doesn't know how much longer she can keep it together.)

2: As Ladybug

[ Just because she wasn't in Paris, didn't mean she was free from her duties as Ladybug. Protecting people was something she had become used to doing, something she -wanted- to do. Although she didn't arrive in the city AS Ladybug, and originally she didn't think she'd even be able to -become- Ladybug... that wasn't important right now. What WAS important is that there is a superheroine zipping her way through town, spinning her yo-yo and occasionally throwing it out to smack a bird in the face to knock it off course of a dive at a potential victim, or whipping it about said victim in question to yank them out of the way of a dive with a shouted: ]

Watch out!

3: As Marinette
[ The bazaar, from what Marinette could tell, was pretty darn cool - and even better, she even recognized some of the food available at the booths. She hasn't partaken of the feast yet though, as seeing a number of the dishes filled her with a sense of longing and nostalgia for home. But she didn't want to be a downer at an event that was clearly meant to make people happy, so she glanced up at the nearest person visiting the booth and smiled. ]

Some spread, huh? I haven't seen so much food set out in ... a really long time!

5: Network (Username: JaggedFan):

Um, hello! I uh, guess this is how it works, right? Well, someone should be receiving this at least. My name's Marinette, and I'm new here too. I'm not going to waste anyone's time with questions I'd bet have been asked already - instead I'd like to make an offer. Back home I designed and made..er, things. Clothing, hats, .. stuff like that. And, well, since I'm going to be here for a while, apparently, I don't want to lose any of those skills.

SO, if .. anyone out there'd like a Marinette-original design ...well it doesn't have to be a Marinette original.., look me up! ... Oh, and I can mend torn clothing and accessories too -- actually, just ask me, I bet I can work something out for whatever you need~!

ii. death from above

[Most people wouldn't think that a time where creatures diving out of the sky to attack would be the best time for a walk. Victor von Doom was not most people and he was now taking a leisurely stroll around the city, making sure to stay in areas where there were others out and about.

Every so often, he'd abruptly change directions and brush past someone before there was a low crackle accompanying a louder thump as one of the flying menaces dove into something invisible and magic. A defensive spell, courtesy of Victor von Doom. It was all he could do to keep from pointing out that he had protected them from certain injury, but he knew being conspicuous would be better for him in the long run.

Being a good guy sucked.

That's not a fucking option either and you know it.

[It hurts that she'd even suggest, because no matter how much he hates her right now, for everything she's done, Taako wouldn't leave her to face the Hunger alone, and neither would the rest of them.

(Well, Barry might).]

[ Hurrying she can do. She speeds up just at the word, taking direction soundlessly, scanning ahead psychically for mental presences. People in pain tend to be loud, and sure enough--

Abruptly, ]
I can feel someone in distress about fifty meters ahead of us. Stay behind me. [ Brisk and businesslike, the gun comes up and goes first, suddenly all humoring of Cassie's independence vanished with a credible threat somewhere ahead.

Too bad Anderson isn't as good at picking up on nonhuman threats. She has to do this the old-fashioned way for those. ]

[ It's not that Cain can sense magic or anything, but he can sense bullshit. When someone brushes past him just before another creature dives for him and harmlessly bounces off, he changes his own course and starts to follow that guy instead. Not secretly or anything, just catching up. ]

Not this weird, but I'm a Judge. [ She preempts the question: ] Specialized police force entitled to sentence criminals on the spot. We're pretty unflappable.

[ That's a vast understatement of their general reputation, but it'll do. Anderson doesn't want to make a big fuss about it.

The café is neat and homey, a little frazzled by the divebombing pterodactyl-birds but gamely maintaining business and offering free coffee to anyone who'd been fighting them. Anderson's such a blatantly obvious combatant that they immediately offer her one, which results in her being very secretly flustered. She's nearly shy as she accepts it. ]

[ Honestly, he'd prefer to take a rain check on the vacation. Knowing how things were when he'd unwittingly left it all behind makes him antsy the longer it remains untouched, and he was so ready to tackle it head-on, too.

But it's nervousness he hides well. ]

Free food and no homework. I could get used to this. [ Because that's how an everyday teenager would feel. He tilts his head, hinting at her food. ] Any good?

[ For Anderson, there's nothing left back there for her but the seventeen thousand serious crimes reported every day in the megalopolis. There's always something, neverending. From this vantage point, this strange luminous place outside of time, it seems eternal: the smog and grime and violence of the meat grinder that is Mega-City One.

She can't touch it, will never be able to do more than eke out tiny changes, chipping away with each case she takes. It'll be there forever. She can always go back.

But what can she do here? ]

Hm? Oh. It's fine. [ A short pause. ] Definitely... not chicken.

[ Oops, that makes her more embarrassed. She tries to get her reaction on lock but doesn't quite succeed. She's still pretty new at being a fully instated Judge. ]

No... [ Ruefully, ] I'm not a very good example. [ That's just the truth, no shame in admitting it. Anderson's made a sort of peace with her marginal status in the Hall of Justice, kept on because of her abilities for utility, not because of her (lack of) aptitude.

She collects her coffee, and pays for her food with the simple expedient of putting money on the counter, offering a tiny smile at the cashier, and ducking away before they can protest. She sets it on a table nearby-- it's a small place, so it's a bit tight, and Anderson looks ridiculously out of place in her uniform, but that part doesn't bother her. ]

[ Whoops, there goes buying her lunch. Though given the tiny amount he has that's probably for the best. He does make sure to get a dessert, though, and sets it in front of her pointedly. He did say he'd treat her, after all. ]

Well, given you're the only one I've met, I'd say you're example enough.

[ He clambers up into his chair - tall enough that his legs dangle a bit, ugh - and takes another curious look at her. ]

Why do you say you're not, though?
wronganswer: (1986731 (3))

[personal profile] wronganswer 2017-05-22 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ She'd completely forgotten he was supposed to treat her. No one actually treats her, at home; and she'd gotten flustered and just automatically paid, not wanting to accept things for free from citizens.

It's only as she watches him climb into his chair that she wonders again what he is if not a mutant, but it's too rude to ask. She'd grown up in a very mutant-heavy slum -- she's one herself, after all -- so she doesn't even have to suppress a reaction. He has all his limbs. That's pretty good by Cursed Earth standards. ]

I'm not enough of a hardass, [ she sums up concisely. ] I'm a borderline pass from the academy.

If you're saying that, your homeworld must not be too bad. [ Since he thinks being a hardass isn't a necessary survival trait. It absolutely is, for her. Also, she's totally fishing. Anderson can't help wanting to know about everyone else's origin dimensions. ]
