Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

[The blaster shot comes from behind, dropping one of the creatures from the sky to skid and bounce across the ground before going still in a crumpled heap on the ground just a few steps from its intended victim.

He sidesteps around the other person, nudging the body with his foot and a glance, blaster held tight in his grasp. He doesn't speak immediately, scanning the sky for a second attack from the migrating 'flock'.

When it seems the others have momentarily reconsidered, he glances back to the person beside him with a curt nod.]

Might be a good time to consider shifting your business indoors.

iii. Homesick Bazaar.

[Cassian wasn't interested in telling stories, but he was interested in collecting more information. It had only been a couple nights since his arrival through the portal. He had barely been able to stand on his own, and even after the helpful staff at the hospital had patched him up, Cassian had found reason to leave as soon as the minimum 24 hours had run out. His side was thickly bandaged, and his bones were set and slowly healing from his fall in the archives.

He walked slow, with a faint limp and canned the tables as he passed them, snagging a familiar bottle of Corellian Ale from one of the tables. After he opened the bottle, he found a solid wall to lean against gingerly. Later he would try the food, for now, he needed something to cut the pain.

He took a drink, scanned the crowd, and tried his best to be unobtrusive, waving off requests to speak by playing on the sympathy show for the sling his other arm was hung in. That sympathy would lessen if those same people knew the convenient placement of the sling let him keep his hand on the handle of his blaster, hidden beneath his jacket.]

[ Not long ago, Sansa was a frightened, furtive thing, shuffled from monster to monster. Now, all who would have threatened or tormented her are worlds away: Cersei Lannister sits the Iron Throne, but that is no concern of Sansa's. Joffrey fell to poison, Ramsay to his hounds. There is only one human threat now that remains to her, and Lord Baelish is not here, that she has seen.

She only wishes that Lady Brienne might have accompanied her. Her sworn sword might have made her feel safe, in a queer world that leaves Sansa with more questions than answers. All the same, she knows that she is tall. She knows that she is imposing, and her skin has turned to steel. She will not allow herself to be cowed by flying monsters, and so she walks when she must, skirting close to the walls. Her umbrella is held aloft when the screeches come, fearsome and alien and hungry. A pale hand shoots out from behind her umbrella, and it seizes onto the elbow of the nearest person before her, her breath caught into her throat. They are armed, at least, though she cannot see their face. ]

Pray forgive me, [ she murmurs, her heart fluttering (with a "my lady" or "my lord" offered if the person seems well-dressed enough), ] but I carry no sword.

[ It is a risk; perhaps the stranger will prove a cruel one, and cast her away to save him or herself. But the lone wolf dies, whilst the pack survives. If they should stand together, perhaps the beasts will be deterred. ]

[Spike was no one likely to be mistaken for a lord, though Sansa might mistake him for a man of her bastard brother's; a brother of the Night's Watch dressed all in black. On second glance, she might notice the long leather overcoat instead of a cloak or fur and the clothing not matching anything she may be familiar with. Platinum pale hair was vibrant against the darkness around them, Spike distracted from the oncoming creature by a hand grabbing his arm.

The quiet, polite tone is almost painfully familiar to him, a reminder of days when his heart still beat and he pined for things he couldn't have, dreams above his station. But that was then and this was now and Spike was no longer a man with dreams, but a demon who reveled in the chaos bursting out around him. He may not be able to lay a hand on anyone human, but he could vent those frustrations on the non-human. Not out of any noble or altruistic reason, but because he loved the thrill of it. He was a predator and it was in his nature, after all. So he wandered the night with no umbrella or cover, daring the creatures to try their best.

At the comment, he scoffed a laugh.]

I can see that. I can also see it wouldn't do you much good if you had one. Swords are for slashing, not dragging along behind you because they're too bloody heavy to lif-- down!

[He grabbed for her, pushing her down as one of the previously quietly flying creatures made a swoop down towards them. He may not have a sword, but he did have a bat wrapped in barbed chain that he could swing with supernatural strength and speed, which he did.]

[Perimeter guards can't be everywhere and new residents might not be fully aware of the migrational situation. One such person stops very abruptly on his way to the Bazaar. Something is off and he can feel it. Jack's grip on his blade's sheath tightens as he gives a visual sweep of the area around him.

[He looks up to little too late. Trained reaction speed saves his head from getting clawed up, though his hair is slightly out of its top knot now. There are more important things though.]

My hat!

[Wooden sandals quickly click and clack as he gives chase after the flying monster. His sword may not be so helpful for this ranged menace.]

[With a slightly frayed straw hat, Jack arrives at the Bazaar and reveals his surprised face from underneath. No wonder he could smell the food from so far away.]

There is so much...

[How long has it been since he's had a full course meal? His stomach's growl can probably tell half the people there in one full, loud second. Tilting his hat down to hide his embarrassed face, Jack begins looking for anything that might even be remotely from Japan. Honestly, he'll try anything once so he's in no hurry and curiously looking at the food everyone's eating.]

[Gifts? Jack never asks for one and rarely stays in one place long enough to accept such an offer. What might be simple to some are true gifts to him. A gi like the one he's wearing, a tea set, or even just incense.

Besides, it looks like he's going to be sticking around for a while, and there's only one way he'll be able to formulate a plan of action from here on out: knowing as much as he can.

... But also, he hasn't had lunch yet.

So, Yuuto—another ordinary teenager who easily blends in with the rest of the human crowd, messy hair and thick brim of his glasses obscuring some of the unreadable gaze of his face—ends up hovering around the bazaar, hands shoved into his pockets as he leisurely makes his way through. One thing, though: ]

... There's so much... [ There's too much. Yuuto pauses several feet away from a group of booths, staring on thoughtfully. And if anyone should be standing close enough— ] ... Hey—any suggestions on where to start?

PROMPT TWO
[ Fighting monstrous beings is nothing new. What is new is that said monstrous beings are as real as, well... reality itself, treated like typical wildlife out in the world rather than a product of a warped cognition residing in a dimension separate from human society. In other words, they pose a threat to the public at large.

Correction, they're currently being a threat to the public at large.

It's lovely day outside, which is all that's needed for another giant bird-dinosaur-thing attack, apparently. Maybe you're out on the streets, and one of the creatures is diving down, ready to snatch you up in a matter of seconds—or perhaps you're perfectly capable of handling the damn thing for yourself, but sorry dude, you superpowered fighting types being common is a new and weird concept, okay—but no matter which applies, one thing happens for sure.

Before the flying monster could cause any potential harm to anyone, something interferes in a quick blur with a harsh strike to its head midair, causing the monster to hit the streets below with a crash. Its attacker hovers in the air long enough to catch a glimpse—something nearly humanoid in stature at a glance, but it's clearly no person, made even more evident as it flaps its own wide wings before it vanishes entirely, as if it were never there.

How mysterious.

The monster twitches upon the streetway in a desperate attempt to regain its bearings, refusing to give up the fight just yet. That's when a red gloved hand tugs your arm in the opposite direction; said hand belongs to a figure dressed entirely in black, long, flowing coat and white masquerade mask giving the impression the attire is more of a costume than everyday wear. Nonetheless, its wearer is as solemn and serious as the situation warrants. ]

Let's go. [ He cants his head aside, tone commanding. ] There's a few more of 'em coming.

[ Run to safety? Or does he just not know you're up for a fight? ]

As for Prijata stuff, uh. This guy already accepts all sorts of weird gifts from his friends in canon, so as long as it's something a little meaningful or could have some kind of memory attached to it, chances are he'll happily accept it. Being a potential new guy, I wouldn't expect characters to really know what he'd want/need, anyway :'> ]

[ This whole invasion is pretty annoying. For someone like Cain, it's no more than an inconvenience but people are getting hurt and putting everything into a tailspin. The fact that he doesn't feel compelled to always carry an umbrella to hide behind probably says something.

He probably should, though, if only to save the clothes that keep getting ripped and torn by these dumb flyers. There's wounds on the back of his shoulders where he'd gotten grasped before this young hero had come along. Cain isn't bothered by them, instead letting his eyes flicker between the young man and the space where his magical companion just was. ]

(Lucretia's a reluctant fighter, one who will do what she has to if the situation calls for it. Even then, her grasp on magic is still tenuous, physical fighting skills rusty and unpolished; turns out hanging around with a group of people who will go for almost anything if it looks at them sideways for long enough has its downsides after all.

The creature soaring up above is no doubt drawn to her IPRE-issue jacket, the bright red a beacon against the concrete ground. When it swoops down towards her, instinct is the only thing that saves Lucretia at the last second: she jumps to the side, and lashes out with a fist, surprising herself with the swiftness of her reaction.

It barely connects, but sends the thing spinning back up into the air nevertheless. When it turns for another go at her, all Lucretia can do is raise clenched hands against it, stomach tight with anxiety as she desperately tries to remember anything Magnus has ever tried to teach her in the past.)

03. homesick bazaar

(Now that she's at three days since she came through the portal, Lucretia is starting to reconcile with the reality of her situation: this (whatever this is) is not another cycle. This planet– this city– is unlike anything that she's seen before. Usually this wouldn't perturb her, but the disappearance of the Starblaster, and her fellow IPRE members has changed everything. It's starting to hit her, hard.

Barring this, the Light doesn't seem to exist here, and there's nothing to shoot for, nowhere to start. Anxiety is settling in as she wanders the streets, completely thrown by the sudden disappearance of a structure she has been dutifully following for more than thirty years now.

The Bazaar provides a welcome distraction. Her attention is immediately drawn to familiar smells that abruptly remind her of her mother's home cooking; of a planet with two suns that she misses more than she can say; of a ship, and of people she's starting to dread she'll never see again. She accepts a plate with shaking hands and takes it to a quiet place so she can sit and pencil a few, quiet thoughts into her pocketbook about things she is worried she might, one day, forget.)

(The feed buzzes for a short while, static crackling until the video finally comes into proper focus; even then, the camera is angled down. Lucretia's shoulder is the only thing in shot.

There's a soft 'okay' and a gentle shuffling of paper, and then a journal is being held up to the camera, opened wide to focus on a double page spread of a watercolour painting. The painting is of purple and green hills, some of which are cracked neatly down the middle to reveal rock inside that sparkles like the night sky. In the middle of the page, bright white contrasting starkly, is a large, soft white circle. It's brushed in delicately, and seems to be radiating light out over the hills surrounding it.

Lucretia clears her throat, speaking loudly and clearly from behind the book.)

Has anybody seen anything like this planet side? I'd appreciate any information you have.

And she doesn't need to be here for him to see the look he'd be getting if he seriously suggested not helping.

He's just glad he argued for keeping his guns, considering the enemy. Lightsabers might be flashy, but they really don't help with range, and throwing the damn thing wastes too much time.

He ducks under an awning, taking a moment to check his gear before he looks up.]

You know what would help? Giant bird nets. I knew a guy who could make them from lasers...

[Not that Bao-dur would be impressed by that description of his shields, but hey, what he doesn't hear won't hurt him.]

[This is more like it. Free food, no monsters, it's almost like a holiday. He can't remember the last time he got to stop for a whole day- well, he can, but he isn't counting the cage. Time to relax, and hope he still has enough cards for two decks.

He settles at a table, a whole plate of snacks at his elbow, and gives a smile at anyone who sits opposite.]

Princess Carolyn should have known this place wouldn't be all feasts and weird, tinder knock offs. There's some real chaos going on here, and suddenly everything that was shitty about Hollywoo seems like peanuts in comparison. She'd rather be in her element, dealing with stress and famous people and not weird, flying monsters. When one comes swooping for her, she lets her instincts take over and all but throws herself from the stairs she'd been running up for shelter. Agility is one of the few things she has going for her, evidenced in the fact that she lands gracefully on her feet before she uprights herself and hisses. She's all noise and no action and she knows it, and she can't run nearly as quickly as she needs to in heels.

She slips them off, hurling one square in the face of the approaching feathery pterodactyl before she starts to back up, fur visibly fluffing up as she tenses.

"Eat it, chicken!" She declares, before she turns tail and sprints away to her best ability, calling loudly for help all the while.

Like many, Princess Carolyn is overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice and food. She may be used to Hollywoo decadence, but this is something else. She's not averse to trying new things, so she will be politely sniffing around all over the place. She's a little hesitant, as if hoping for someone to tell her what these things are before she digs in.

When she looks around, she sees other people just as unsure and confused. The coddling instinct kicks in, and she starts to actively look for things she recognizes so she can point them out. Sushi, pasta, risotto, muffins and wine are things she is very familiar with. Most of which contain fish, in some manner. She fills a plate with a little of whatever looks appealing and moves to mingle, pointing things out to people as she goes.

"This tastes great, honey. Trust me, I had it aaaall the time back home." And, if she's unsure, she might ask some questions. "Do you have wine where you're from?"

He's taking a break, pressed in against a particularly recessed door and hoping the frame is deep enough to hide him, because having to look up all the time gets pretty tiring, honestly. It does mean he's safely undercover when the next one attacks, meaning he gets to watch the whole thing.

"Good throw. I'm impressed."

Despite the sarcastic tone, he actually kind of is, given the chosen projectile, and even more impressed that she landed safely in those shoes, but letting anyone else know that isn't going to happen.

Still, as much of a jerk as he can be, he isn't about to leave someone under attack and not offer the bare minimum of help at least.

However, this didn't keep him from trying to help out people who seemed even less prepared for this situation. While he didn't hesitate to dart in and lay down cover fire when he came across a hapless soul pinned down by the predators, Will was still probably one of the worst shots the FBI had ever armed.

So maybe he was helping a person out? Maybe he was trying to help some people out and was in desperate need of assistance himself? Really it could go either way and besides; wasn't it the thought that counted? ]

vi. Wildcard - Up on the wall

[ Given the current infestation of flying monsters, going up on a platform at the top of the wall might not be considered a positive reflection on one's sense of self-preservation. Anyone who knew him would be quick to point out that most of what Will did was not a positive reflection on his sense of self-preservation.

It was a curious thing, being somewhere no one knew him.

Will was up on the top of the wall, hands in his pockets as he stared down towards the wilderness beyond the safety of the city. He'd heard the welcoming spiel, as well as comments in passing, detailing the dangers of the monsters beyond the wall, and now he found himself watching the forest, trying to spot the movements of those very monsters. The ones who were bold enough to come test the boundaries of a city full of prey.

His expression was preoccupied, which may have encouraged a remark about the wisdom of his current, precarious position. ]

I. IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE

[ Helping out others is something that just comes naturally to Ann, but... that doesn't mean she can't have some regrets about this. First of all, this is an actual jungle. It's humid, she's all sweaty, there are bugs everywhere, her feet hurt from walking, there's mud in her boots... not to mention, something kind of slimy trickled down the back of her shirt right after they left the city, and she can't stop thinking about it.

It's gross. She feels gross. The only thing keeping her going is knowing that there are people out there that need their help.

Suddenly, she hears a rustling noise coming from behind. ]

III. BAZAAR-NESS AS USUAL

[ This is the most amazing thing that Ann has ever seen. Seriously, it's like the time the three (technically four) of them went to that fancy buffet after their first palace except better—there's no exorbitant price point, for one thing. Or snooty people sideeying them with tongs in hand. All the food she could ever want, and it's free? Heaven.

So she flits eagerly from booth to booth, loading up on all the various kinds of food until she can't carry anymore—not that this stops her. There's very little that she doesn't pick up to try, especially if it appears to be some sort of dessert. In fact, pretty much everything she picks up is a dessert...

a. When she comes across a platter of castella cake, her eyes light up like a kid on Christmas. She takes a slice from the cake, then shoves it in her mouth right then and there without a hint of shame. ]

Ooh! It's so good! [ Except her mouth is still full, so it comes out more like mm ish sogoodf! Without missing a beat, she takes another slice... and another...

b. There really is very little she won't try. The next thing she picks up is some sort of dumpling-looking thing, which is also unceremoniously shoves right into her mouth. Except... this time she makes a little choking noise, her face turning red as she starts to cough. ]

[You'd think, after two or three hours wandering the bazaar and eating whatever looks appealing, that he'd be full. But he isn't. Cinan is way too engrossed in the stories about the food and its origins, where it comes from, about the family members who made it, to pay attention to how much he's eaten. The place is both really familiar and really unfamiliar, everyone sharing everything but with all these overtones of missing home and family.

He's just moving on to the table with the dumplings, about to ask what they're like when the girl beside him erupts in cries about how hot it is. Blinking, he almost immediately digs into his messenger bag and produces a bottle full of liquid separated into two layers, one pink and clear, the other milky and translucent that tastes light and fruity. Giving the bottle a few vigorous shakes, he hands it over to her.]

Here, drink this. It's from my home, it'll take the edge off the heat right away.

[The winged faerie was in a world she didn't understand. A city of metal and humans and advancements she had no knowledge of. The ones who'd greeted her had tried to make it all make sense, but they were using words she had no basis for. Technology and computers. Portals she understood, but not in the sense of drawing one away from one's world.

Still, there was one thing she did understand; protecting those who could not protect themselves. She was a Guardian of the Moors, after all. Protector of beast and man alike now, thanks to the daughter of her heart. Or so she attempted to be. She may not be poisoned against man as much as she had been before, but it was still instinct to err on the side of the beast. So when the call went out to save those in the city from the creatures that flew over it, it was easy enough for her to take to the skies and try to deter or lead away any of the more easily distracted beasts.

There were those that got past her and the other guards, though. Those that followed their instincts to feast on those that were easy prey. Maleficent could easily be called down from the skies to help in those instances, or come down on her own if she saw the potential for imminent harm. She would do her best to use magic and her own tie to nature to convince the beast to feast elsewhere, but she wouldn't back down or allow an innocent to be harmed if the creature was insistent enough.]

[While she has no companions or allies here at the moment, that won't stop Maleficent from offering what she can to those who seem to need it. A musical chiming flower from home, a shiny gem pulled from the ground, something to put a smile on a face that seems to be cast in sorrow. Her altruism towards humans is new, but she's trying to keep her mind open to them, reminded of Aurora and that purity that can be found in a human if one attempts to look.]

She spots someone about to get grabbed up and calls out to them to get down. It figures the one time she doesn't have a weapon on her is when she really does need one.

She looks around quickly before grabbing a nearby rod from a scaffolding of some kind. Thin but solid. Hard metal. Just what she needs. The monster is swooping back down and she's running towards it from the side. She whacks it right in one of its legs and makes it cry out in pain. She swings at it again but it's already flapping to get away.

She keeps the rod in her hands because she isn't betting on the thing not coming back -- or another one trying the same thing. But for the moment, she looks to the person that had almost been grabbed up: ]

This was stupid. Chasing off after a rumor of a magical spring was dangerous, and it was no wonder several people had already gotten themselves in trouble. Ed had, of course, offered to go in with a rescue team to help find some of these people - but that didn't mean he was happy about it.

"It doesn't make any sense to go off on your own, if you don't have the ability to protect yourself." He muttered, more to himself than the accompanying party. "If they're going to be stubborn enough to go off like this, they should have at least brought someone with them that could help! What the hell were they thinking?"

Edward may not be aware of the irony, considering his own stubborness. Even so, the alchemist knew how to protect himself, and if he was desperate enough to seek out this spring for an ailing friend, he would have put together a party that could survive the trip.

If there was anything Ed could appreciate, it was a free meal. Going without wasn't too uncommon where he'd come from, so there was almost no hesitation at the thought of all this food available to eat.

Almost. Edward had learned a few things before coming to this place, and one of them was that the powers in charge had a tendency to enjoy messing with citizens. It was possible the food was tampered with, or all some other sort of trick and that had become Ed's new normal.

Thus, it wasn't until he determined that he didn't have an option that he gave in, to partake in some of what was available. As others boasted about the foods they came across that they had always wanted to try or were a favorite growing up, he decided his safest bet was to go for things others were already eating - with no evidence of the food being anything more than just that.

Soon he was participating right along with everyone else, finding food from his own world that he may not have had in years, and listening in about dishes from the other patrons.

Ed's very simple, living outside of a suitcase most of his life. He's gone without for so long, he has a tendency to prefer the necessities over much else.

[ So who's dumb enough to get dragged into a mission on his first day in the city?

This guy.

The group of citizens that had been planning on venturing out into the jungle had someone bail on them, which prompted them to approach the first clueless-looking, but able-bodied person they could find. Ryuji had been in the wrong place at the wrong time and in his confusion, impulsively accepted their request. They'd tempted him with the promise of an amazing reward if they ended up being successful.

And rewards are always nice, right?

Navigating through a thick and lush jungle is nowhere as easy as it looks on TV. Unlike the Phantom Thieves, this group is uncoordinated and disorganized, which he entirely blames on the leader. Eventually, they do indeed get lost, and in the midday heat, exhausted as well.

The group rests, and Ryuji takes the opportunity to relieve himself and also clean off the sweat from his face at a nearby stream of water.

He doesn't expect to come back to find everyone gone.

Hours later, if anyone has come out to find and rescue this poor, poor boy (or have come by just by sheer coincidence), they'll find a rather strange looking structure out in a clearing but no one around to be seen. ]

Skywalker's lightsaber comes in handy for defense, in such cases; at least she's getting some practice using it, she thinks, instead of letting it sit idly clipped to her belt.

But what are simply a few sparse, minor swooping attacks by curious and hungry creatures becomes more dangerous as the migration continues, and close to the tenth day cycle following their appearance an alert is raised as a swarm of them begin diving from the sky into the inhabited portion of the city. In particular, toward a small gathering of people exposed out in the open. She bolts toward them at breakneck speed, her lightsaber already drawn and flashing blue. There are screams and scattered panic as teeth and claws materialize from the sky. ]

[ Food has always drawn her in, in this place. There's a variety of it from different lands and worlds, and she's lived for so long on the same measly freeze-dried Imperial rations that Rey finds she has quite a taste for virtually anything that even has a taste.

At this particular bazaar she delights to find such exotic foods from her own galaxy, even if it's from the Outer Rim, and not anything she would have found on Jakku. There's Tatooine delicacies like sand gizzars and Tusken black melon, Corellian buckwheat noodles with rancor sauce, and even the extremely-rare Alderaanian starblossom fruit — the latter of which is tart and juicy on her tongue, and she goes back for several more servings.

She's going to be hard pressed to share that particular treat. ]

But a blur of black, red, and green swung into view just before the monster could reach its target. A small boot slammed harshly into the side of the monster's face, and there was a sharp crack as a pair of fists came down with a vicious fury onto the first part of the creature he could reach.

The monster cried out in a mix of pain and angry, and Damian kicked off the monster to land quickly, gracefully, on the ground in a wave of a dark cape, a pair of slender batarangs already between gloved fingers. )

[ Anderson is ruthlessly competent in the face of protecting citizens, as she still thinks of them, even though her brain trips up on citizens of what? when she stops to think. So she doesn't. Of all the people around the Quarantine, she might look the most like she's ready for a full-on assault at any given moment. She hasn't been here long and it feels alien, like stripping her skin off herself, to remove her Judge armor, so she's still in it: relentlessly black, utilitarian padded armor with no stylistic components whatsoever. Just the insignia of the Hall of Justice and her badge, saying Anderson.

[ Eventually, though, the attack must pass at some point, and Anderson is left feeling odd and directionless. With her duty and morals aligned in protecting the locals, she'd been occupied and kept busy. Now... now she's wandering around a colorful bazaar, filled with regional foods and cheerful faces, earnest conversation all around her.

It's the worst form of culture shock she could imagine. This couldn't be less like Mega-City One if she'd sat down and tried to think up what that would be. Another Judge might shut down, go fully stoic in the face of this deep uprooting.

Anderson is slowly, tentatively, starting to trust it. Of course, she has an advantage: she's surface-skimmed several minds while walking, and she knows for certain none of this is a trick. There's no nefarious, ulterior motive. It's just people living their lives in a world not wrecked by devastation. There's no Cursed Earth here. Instead, lush greenery, free food, a caring government trying to rebuild and replace.

Compared to where she'd grown up... any mutant from the slums a hundred meters from the border wall would think this was paradise.

Anderson's more savvy than that, but she's not immune to the thought. She slowly makes her way around the bazaar, looking somewhat overwhelmed, no matter how she tries to recover. There's an out-of-place reverence to her features as she accepts offered food with a sober Thank you, and retreats to try it, out of the way of the bustle. ]

[ Roars a man wearing far less for armor than she is. He looks like a thug with the leather and wild hair, skin scarred and heavily inked. He also appears to be carrying a wide-bladed sword even bigger than his impressive height. He flattens himself against a wall not to far from her, and it's her padded armor and that practiced, military poise she has with her firearm at the ready that grabs his attention. ]

[ Oh look, said thug appears to be yelling at you, Judge. And for the moment fails to notice the rapid decent of a flying monster zeroing in on his position. There's a lot going on, and Gladio's distracted by the chaos. ]

i. healing spring, not so much searching & rescuing;

[ Charles Vane comes into the world of Riverview somehow more peaceful that he had the world before, despite being strangled unconscious and suffering severe damage to the vertebrae in his neck, tip toeing along the edge of death. still, less screaming and crying, at least. The men and women in Nassau are likely now thinking 'how is it possible Charles Vane, of all captains, is dead', and were he awake to ponder on it, Vane might've laughed. Instead, when he does come to, it's staring up at the fluorescent lights of a hospital room, laid out on a cushy bed, and wondering why the fuck Hell is so goddamn shiny.

He spends most of the introduction - the doctors and nurses, the representatives, the orientation video - staring silently at each person who opens their mouth, head tilting now and again with eyes narrowing in assessment, but utters nothing in the way of commentary or question. Maybe some people think he might be mute. Most would probably think he's simply stupid, if he didn't look like he was considering putting the nearest object with heft through someone's face. All they get in way of personality from him, before he's let loose, is the username he's made to create, simply claiming "NASSAU". No one ever said Charles Vane was modest, okay? Given his clothes back, now laundered and clean, Charles still sports the deep purple and blue bruising around his neck, telling of the near death he'd been pulled from, the ever present iron necklace not yet reattached. The first thing he hears gossip of is the spring, and given the city walls are starting to make him nauseous more than the sea ever had, Vane sets out for it, half for recon, half for curiosity.

The captain doesn't make any stops to rescue woeful explorers, or expend any energy on searching for them, just stalks quietly through the brush, until he makes it to the temple, and within it, the spring. There, anyone else coming to seek out the legendary waters, will find a man half stripped down, lounging in the pool like it's a spa, a canteen set nearby already filled. He wants to get rid of those remaining bruises, okay? Plus all the rest that came along with capture and imprisonment and execution. Not that he'll stop anyone else from taking samples, he just doesn't plan on moving until he's satisfactorily soaked it all in. ]

[ Vane is neither patrol, reserve or concerned citizen. He's just hungry. In the chance that you happen to be in his way, a hand will drop on your shoulder and give an unkind shove before you hear a gravelly, accented voice - ]

[ You're in his shot, which is what rings out directly after, loud and deafening, as the oncoming bird dino monster comes swooping in, only to get a face full of whatever ammunition guns in this world use. Once it hits the ground, Charles walks around whoever he'd pushed down, tugging a skinning knife free from his boot as he crouches next to the carcass, starting to defeather and gut it. Yum. ]

iii. homesick bazaar;

[ Things that had always been missed when Charles had been too long from Nassau - the particular brand of throat burning whiskey and ale served at the whore house and taverns in the outlaw capitol. Spending most of his last visit in Nassau locked in a prison cell, and then at the end of a hangman's rope, sadly, Vane hadn't had the opportunity to partake. It seems the portal has seen to correct that tragedy, and in the bazaar, Vane can be found settled at a taken with several mugs and bottles set out in front of him. He isn't drinking all of them at the moment, some are likely to be taken away with him, but one mug is slid over to whoever else sits at his table, ale slooshing over the side messily. ]

[Normally, he would avoid the table occupied by someone clearly just here to drink but... Well... All the other tables are packed. He regrets his judgement as soon as he sits down, as the man is obviously very friendly. Or, at least, in a friendly mood.

He accepts the drink with a laugh. Because haha yeah everything is totally on this dude today. His laugh is cut short as soon as he gets the mug close to his face, however. If he didn't know any better, he was pretty sure he just singed all the hair off his face.]

[Even if she's new here, helping out with a search and rescue is something that Cassie's good at. With enough alcohol in her, she can focus and actually direct her visions enough to help locate some of the missing people. There's a few cases where she can even pick up on what kind of trap or circumstance that's keeping them missing. She doesn't want to particularly venture out with the rest of the rescue party, but she knows that it's easier for her to stay in touch and be useful this way.

So she makes sure her combat boots are laced up nice and tight before heading out into the jungle. She's been paired off with someone who's supposed to make sure she stays safe so she can call out any visions or directions to those who can actually fight. Instead of doing what she wants and pushing ahead, she surprisingly stays toward the back of the group with her designated babysitter. They can't be happy having to do this, so she tries to give them an out. It's not like keeping an eye on a thirteen year old who has to drink to help out with the cause is particularly rewarding.]

You don't actually have to stay with me. I can take care of myself.

ii. death from above

[Cassie doesn't have a weapon. At least not one that she feels comfortable pulling out and using. She has a gun with only one round of ammo, and she knows that she isn't skilled enough with it to be of any help with the flying menaces that are swooping the city. But it's not like she's going to stay cooped up just because her bright hair essentially makes her a moving target.

She's perched up on a ledge somewhere, idly sketching in her sketchbook. She spots the winged thing moving in, and also spots someone down below that's its target. Sighing, she shoves her sketchbook into her bag and ends up hopping down so she can run over toward them.]

Get down. Now.

[Grabbing their wrist, she roughly tugs them with her as she drops down toward the ground. The look she gives them is almost like she blames them for almost being attacked in the first place.]

How fast can you run? Because I'm pretty sure I drew a picture of you losing your head and being eaten, so you really need to get inside.


iii. homesick bazaar

[She's aware the food is free. She doesn't have to sneak around. But she's so used to having to steal and sneak food that having so much offered for free is a little unsettling. So she makes her way through those gathered as quietly as possible, grabbing as much as she can and stuffing it into her messenger bag. She eats as she goes, and ends up having her hands full by the time she finally stumbles across something she recognizes.

She wants the fried chicken, but it's not like she has the hands free to grab it. Luckily someone is standing right beside her.]

Hey.

[Without saying anything more than that, she starts to unload what's in her arms by handing plates over to them.]

Hold these for a second.

[Or for longer than that, because she picks up a drumstick and starts eating. Once she gets in a few bites, she realizes something.]

[ It's not an empty agreement. Anderson might not look happy, but she doesn't look impatient, either. She's a consummate professional, cool and alert, gun ready and held properly pointed at the ground. She answers without taking her eyes from scanning the surroundings. ]

But if you need to be intoxicated to use your abilities, you're vulnerable, [ she says crisply. As someone who needs backup while using hers to their full extent, she's matter-of-fact about it.

[There's a whooping shout as the rock Finn throws hits one of the fying monsters, but the triumph on his face lasts only as long as the dazed swoop away. Then the thing screeches and dives back at him, and Finn yells loud and panicked, diving away from a sharp, tooth-filled beak as the thing dive bombs him, hitting the ground with his fingers over his head.

It misses, he's not sure if it's due to his dodge or interference, but either way from the ground a muttered voice groans out with a thread of frustration.]

III. Bazaar of Food Mecca

[What's that Finn has in his hands? Is it from his galaxy? Not a karking chance. He's holding a moogle pie and happily ignoring small talk in favor of stuffing his face with food better than anything ever served on the regulation meal trays back at the base.

The pie if amazing, and in between bites, Finn can be overheard telling one of the nearby residents of the Quarantine that he's kind of a big deal back home. Don't believe him. It's a lie.]

[ since arriving through the portal still in her hazmat suit with black blood dripping from her nose, and having been pulled from a moment where she'd given her biosafety helmet to Emori, Clarke has realized that there is no way back, for the moment. the knowledge that Skaikru and the chosen ones from the other eleven grounder clans are safe in the bunker is consolation, albeit bittersweet.

she'd like to return, to face whatever the deathwave and whatever else followed, with them. no such luck.

in this new colony she's a part of, a magical 'healing spring' that cures wounds and diseases sounds too good to be true, but it is — even if the effects are only temporary after removing samples from their original source — and Clarke's undeniably curious about it. but like that law that Murphy's so aptly named after, inevitably scientists and scholars from the research institute and wholly unprepared for adventurous exploration find their way into the jungle with its strangling, man-eating vines and dangerous creatures made up of animated rock. and then civilians, many of whom bring their entire families in their effort to cure a sick relative.

all Clarke has to do is think Charlotte, and she's volunteering for the rescue mission. no way she's sitting this out when there are children involved.

there's a civilian group that's radioed in that they're trapped in a section of the jungle and beset upon by the behemoth that's cornered them in an area flanked by the river, and Clarke and her team head out. turning to the team member next to her: ]

We have to hurry. We don't know what else these people might be exposed to, out there.

iii. homesick bazaar.

[ she's not entirely too fond of eating whatever might be put in front of her — not even mount weather's chocolate cake could tempt her to let down her guard — but she eyes a cup of strange-colored liquor curiously. ]

...How do we even know any of this is safe for us, particularly if it's not from our own world? [ she asks out loud, to no one in particular. ]

I. Search & Rescue

[Exploration wasn't normally his thing. Good thing he was more than used to running supplies to people. Although, he didn't normally have to trek through jungles to do so. He was glad he hadn't gotten stuck on the actual exploration team. It was even better that he didn't have to carry the huge amount of food and water by himself.]

How much further do we have to go? I feel like I'm going to start melting soon.


III. Homesick Bazaar

[He hadn't left his small apartment with the intent of checking out the bazaar, but there really wasn't anything else interesting to do at the moment. Really, he wasn't even hungry. He had just needed to get out and walk around for awhile. As he walked around, deeply inhaling all the delicious scents, he picked up on something familiar. Zeroing in on it as best he could, he followed his nose to a booth that absolutely had all his favorite dishes from Buon Viagglo.

Suddenly he felt like he hadn't eaten in forever. Grabbing everything he could carry, he made his way to the nearest table to devour his haul. It didn't look like there was any table completely empty so he just stopped at the first one occupied by only one person.]

Do you mind if I sit with you? I don't think there are any empty tables.

[Honestly, Tieria had been surprised at how long he’d managed to keep the table to himself. Between the offer of free food and nostalgia, the bazaar was attracting an understandable amount of attention and space was at a premium. It was a situation he was used to, so Badou’s presence didn’t bother him.

The amount of food he was carrying, though, that was another story. Compared to his own simple meal of a thick meat patty, a packed block of mixed vegetables, and a modest portion of rice, the difference was almost comical. He couldn’t help but eye it with a combination of disgust and fascination; surely, no one would intend to eat that all on their own.]
