riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

( A clipboard, a pen, and a lot of things that need organising. Had the tools provided been more in keeping with those she left behind, Josephine would hardly be able to tell the difference between this and home. Even here, she navigates the waters of diplomacy, finding people to fill out teams and convincing them to do so.

She bows her head, smiles at the next person she runs into and shifts her clipboard out of the way to offer a hand to shake. Her voice is melodic, clear, with an accent that rolls off the tongue pleasantly. )

Good afternoon. Josephine Montilyet, I'm currently devising new teams to be sent into the jungle where the healing spring has been discovered. May I ask your name and skills?

( A picture of perfect mannerisms. )

homesick bazaar
( Well. It's a beautiful bazaar. Slightly chaotic, could be better organised in places, but the overall effect is wonderful. And it smells--

Amazing. Josephine inhales deeply at each table she passes, eyeing the food on offer. Occasionally, she'll turn to someone nearby and ask about a dish - )

Do you know the story behind this dish?

( Or, simply - ) Have you tried it?

( After a while tasting new foods, Josephine retires towards a selection of drinks, sipping on one with fingers delicately curled around the glass. Too many years of being taught exact customs and behaviour befitting an Antivan noble. )

My home country is famous for its wines. And its coffee. But I truly miss Carastian candies. Not one of ours, but- ( She sighs. ) I do wish I could do their taste justice for you.

[Atton isn't a diplomat. He mostly leaves that to, oh, pretty much anyone else, but mostly the Exile. He can appreciate one in action, though, and he plans to do just that- preferably from a safe distance.]

Atton. I'm an excellent pilot, mostly, but that's pretty irrelevant without a ship.

[It's a hard balancing act, just enough of a boast to try and seem impressive without letting on exactly what he can do. It shouldn't even matter any more, he knows, but old habits die hard. And he isn't being talked into anything before he knows what it is.]

But I'm sure I can dig up a few more skills if I know what they're for.

[personal profile] diplomatical 2017-05-25 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
( Then leave it to her. It is, after all, her job. She rather enjoys finding new ways around the problems that can arise, as stressful as that can be.

While pilots aren't part of her world, Josephine has - of course - been studying up on things, trying to learn what she can about the differences between this world and her own. It's a matter of course - she learned all she could about Val Royeaux and Orlais when she moved there. Of course she learned back in Antiva, but it's always different being there.

And here she doesn't even get the luxury of previous knowledge. )

Ah. And a pilot means you've excellent communication skills, yes? Perhaps you would function well as an intermediary between the group and myself.

( That last sentence is more musing than an actual suggestion, and she scribbles name and job down before she forgets. )

( shaking hands. emily has always felt self-conscious about her hands, about the way they're shaken and kissed by numerous nobles and people wanting her attention for some small matter. but she offers her hand still, smile thin. )

It's a pleasure, Lady Montilyet. ( it's a guess -- the perfect manners would indicate nobility back home, why not here? ) Emily Kaldwin. ( no titles. nothing else. there's no one here from her world who knows who she is, and emily's enjoying the little bit of freedom that gives her. ) I know how to fight and defend myself. Will that be enough?

( of the supernatural powers -- those she keeps quiet about, too. but she doesn't have a practical skill at healing or helping those who can, but she can't just sit by and do nothing. )
diplomatical: (a little more just a little more)

[personal profile] diplomatical 2017-05-25 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
( Very observant. Josephine's face relaxes into a more neutral and natural smile. )

There is always room for warriors. ( Fortunately or unfortunately, she makes a note of Emily's name and abilities. ) And I imagibe your physical abilities would make you quite capable of helping with other miscellaneous tasks.

( er. )

With a little guidance. ( even meagan hadn't asked much from her in that way, beyond odd chores around the ship. but if she can lift an unconscious man over her shoulder with ease then there's nothing stopping her from doing other tasks. ) I'm no warrior, though. My father taught me how to fight, and he was the Spymaster.

( that's the best explanation she can give for the type of combat she's most suited for. shadows and secrecy, that's where she fit best these days. )
diplomatical: (could i steal your heart)

[personal profile] diplomatical 2017-05-31 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
( Ah. Josephine clicks her tongue against the roof of her mouth, a noise of disappointment in herself more than anything for the automatic assumption. )

My apologies. I simply assumed- ( But still, a spymaster trained woman has her own skills. Josephine clears her throat. ) No matter. I'm sure your skills will come most in handy for reaching unusual locations.

I know it well, actually. It's a special back in my home world.

[The dish itself isn't all that impressive, overloaded with cheese and spices, but Ignis' smile is fond as comes to a stop beside Josephine.]

They call it Kenny's Original. It's from a small diner with a man-sized bird mascot pasted everywhere... Salmon fillet, garlic, far too much cheese than can be healthy. A guilty pleasure.
diplomatical: (behind the door)

*A* i hope i can keep it up!

[personal profile] diplomatical 2017-05-25 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
( It certainly looks... far different to anything Josephine is personally acquainted with. Better than emergency rations, at least. But what isn't? )

A man-sized bird mascot? ( The mental image makes her laugh. ) I cannot imagine what such a thing would look like. ( There's a lot of creatures back home that... were not meant to be turned into mascots. She's seen too many bakeries put cute little renditions of killer animals on their cakes. )
cookingmama: (he got feminine hips! and i'm like)

[personal profile] cookingmama 2017-05-27 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Their kingdom for a nug cake.]

It's a monstrous mixture of a crow and a man, really. They've given him eyebrows, a large head, the legs of a man... There are things I would not mind seeing in dreams, but Kenny looming over them is not one of them.

[Ignis laughs, crossing his arms over his chest as he considers Josephine. Out of place, but not unlike the rest of the visitors.]

Have you seen anything from your... realm, perhaps?
diplomatical: (let me steal your heart)

[personal profile] diplomatical 2017-05-31 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
( Her brows furrow, trying to place those things together in her mind's eye, huffing out a bewildered laugh at what comes out of her imagination. )

I do believe I noticed an Antivan seafood dish earlier. ( No wines, though. But she hasn't seen much of the drink stands yet. But for now, Josephine scours the array of dishes, before pointing out something that looks as though it's made with a lot of shrimp. ) Ah, this. It's often had by the docks in summer. Wonderful when accompanied with a good wine.
