riverview: may test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!
● Reserves are currently OPEN.
● Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.
Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.
Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.
This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!
Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.
The problem with walls? They only go so high.
While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.
Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.
Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!
Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.
This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Many thanks to

Samurai Jack | Samurai Jack
[Perimeter guards can't be everywhere and new residents might not be fully aware of the migrational situation. One such person stops very abruptly on his way to the Bazaar. Something is off and he can feel it. Jack's grip on his blade's sheath tightens as he gives a visual sweep of the area around him.
If the potential threat isn't-?]
No!
[He looks up to little too late. Trained reaction speed saves his head from getting clawed up, though his hair is slightly out of its top knot now. There are more important things though.]
My hat!
[Wooden sandals quickly click and clack as he gives chase after the flying monster. His sword may not be so helpful for this ranged menace.]
III.
[With a slightly frayed straw hat, Jack arrives at the Bazaar and reveals his surprised face from underneath. No wonder he could smell the food from so far away.]
There is so much...
[How long has it been since he's had a full course meal? His stomach's growl can probably tell half the people there in one full, loud second. Tilting his hat down to hide his embarrassed face, Jack begins looking for anything that might even be remotely from Japan. Honestly, he'll try anything once so he's in no hurry and curiously looking at the food everyone's eating.]
IV.
[Gifts? Jack never asks for one and rarely stays in one place long enough to accept such an offer. What might be simple to some are true gifts to him. A gi like the one he's wearing, a tea set, or even just incense.
It's hard to go wrong with him.]

[Mid-sentence for any perusing the network right now. Loud, slow and forcefully clear so as not to be misheard.]
-LLO? CAN ANYONE HEAR ME?
[Then, just long enough for someone to almost say something.]
I DO NOT KNOW IF I PRESS THIS TO TAL-
[And just like that it goes from audio, to video, and fluctuates back forth. Each flicker revealing a perplexed man squinting at his phone before he tries pressing again to repeat his message, breaking it up just like before.]

Oh good. I was uncertain what exactly is necessary to make this...thing work. Thank you.
[That sure is a bit of angry face there. He'll try a slight mile to apologize for any damage he's done.]
My name is Jack, not Jesus. Who are you?
no subject
Yeah, no shit. I could tell. [ Yuri doesn't smile in return, just fixes the other with that annoyed, disapproving expression that teenagers are so truly excellent at. ]
Yuri.
no subject
It is nice to meet you, Yuri.
[Well, mostly. Jack might be straining his smile a little bit in saying so.]
If you don't mind my asking, how long have you been here?
no subject
Yeah whatever. [ He can't say the same, because now he's going to have to deal with a bunch of stupid newbie questions, and christ. He's not a personal god damn welcome wagon. ]
Couple of months. You'd better get cozy.
no subject
The news is taken rather personal and Jack lowers his head so as not show just how angry he is. Obviously he's annoying the young boy enough as it is.]
I see. [Why is his life like this? He needs to see Yuri's reaction to the next question, even if Jack might look quite annoyed himself.] Do you know who Aku is?
no subject
Never heard of him. He important to you?
no subject
Yes! I need to destroy him.
[Admitting that isn't a big deal to Jack, not at all.]
How can this be? You seem certain, and upset, yet Aku's reach is never ending. Even to other worlds.
no subject
I'm not upset, I'm irritated by stupidity. There's a huge difference. [ Yuri rolled his eyes, pursing his lips. ] But I'm serious when I say I've never heard of this 'Aku'. Maybe he isn't as far reaching as he'd like you to think.
no subject
No. I suppose he is not after all.
[The video feed jostles as it shows Jack sitting against a tree, brow furrowed as if his eyebrows might provide answers if they touch.
One last thing to check to make one hundred percent sure this isn't another elaborate trick from his arch-enemy.]
Why did you answer my call if you were irritated by it?
no subject
But it definitely wasn't an expression of concern.]Someone had to set you straight on how to use this thing. Before you broke it, or gave me an even bigger headache. [ In Yuri speak, that meant he wanted to help. ]
no subject
I can see how that is a wise move if I am to be here for a long time. Again.
[Jack leans his sheathed sword against his shoulder and closes his eyes as he gives a clearing sigh.]
Thank you, Yuri, for answering my annoying questions. I have much to think about and you seek peace and quiet.
[This is the part where he's probably supposed to disconnect dramatically.
Instead his finger's tentatively hovering over his screen, because one of these might make an air horn or pterodactyl screeches or something. He has no idea, THEY MIGHT.]
no subject
I wouldn't have answered if I didn't want to. Look- this place can be a lot, okay? And all we have to figure it out is each other. So... whatever. [ It's the closest to offering more help that Yuri is going to come, but if Jack cares for it, Yuri will keep talking to him. ]
no subject
This is not the first time something like this has happened to me. However, I am not the only one now and no one is trying to kill me. I suppose that would be "us" instead.
[So he has to admit Yuri's right. There is a bright side.]
no subject
That was a downer. ]
Shitty. [ Because really, what else was he supposed to say? Yuri wasn't exactly any sort of expert at comforting people... ]
Look- maybe it's not much of a comfort, but um. They say if you do enough public service, you can earn a lift home. And for what it's worth, this place isn't so bad. Different, dangerous sometimes- but interesting. And some of the people don't suck.

II
[There's a shout from somewhere off to Jack's left and then a bolt of lightning comes crashing down out of the clear blue sky, neatly striking the feathery monster and sending it tumbling to the pavement.
A man wielding a large, key-shaped blade jogs over. His eyes stay on the monster as it begins to recover its senses and pick itself up. The hat's still clutched in its claws.]
Gonna have to fight if you want that back, I think...
[Terra falls into his battle stance, more than happy to help the stranger out.]
no subject
...it'll have to wait.]
You have my thanks.
[He's not going turn down an assist from another warrior. A far leap into the air shouldn't seem so easy. Drawing his sword and feinting from the top will help dissuade the monster from rising up again, giving a small window of opportunity for his fellow blade wielder.]
apologies for the delay!
Checking his grip on the Keyblade, Terra rushes in after him. He kicks off the ground in a lunge once he's close enough, lightning reappearing in a temporary ring around him. The Thunder Surge catches the monster and gives it a thorough shocking.
Screeching, it rears up, trying to escape the magic attack and the heavy blade that whacks into it a second later, but its retreat is cut off by the airborne man. With a furious flapping of its wings, it knocks its ground assailant aside then throws its head up, snapping at Jack. This isn't the easy dinner it was hoping for but maybe it can still make a meal out of something. Or at least vent its frustration.]
no worries
The monster's take off is prevented with expert rhythmical parrying each time it tries to raise its wings. That's the simple part. Not getting his feet snapped up? Not so much.
Each clack of Jack sandals against the feathery pseudo-pterodactyl is a testament to his agility. He fluidly changes, sword now saving him from a few close grazes and his sheathe dissuading any flying attempts. Until its head turns a full 180 to bite at Jack's waist.
The decision isn't a hard one, another hat can be made over time. He vaults off the creature's shoulders in a back flip.]
It really prefers the high ground.
[All that fancy sword work and not a single attempt to kill it.]
no subject
Pushing himself back up onto his feet and bracing one hand on the cart, he stares up at the warrior fighting for his life and his hat, fully expecting him to put his sword to good use any moment now. There's a nice opening there... and there, and again! But not a single offensive slash or stab. Then the stranger just leaps off the monster, as if he's giving up...
Terra doesn't get it. This thing tried to make a snack of him... and it still has his hat! That could be a very special hat, for all Terra knows. A gift from a friend or the like.
So, when Jack backs off, accepting his hat's grim fate, Terra rushes right back into the fray.
Freed of its sword-swinging passenger, the monster's already several feet into the air and fast rising higher. It sure does prefer the high ground.
Terra points his Keyblade straight at it and focuses, reaching deep into his heart for a stronger magic than Thunder, preparing to bring the monster down once and for all with a single strong blast of Dark Firaga...
... When the monster relinquishes its consolation prize and the hat flutters down, landing on his upturned face.
Dumbfounded, Terra just stands there as the monster makes its getaway. After a moment, he lowers his Keyblade and reaches up to the slightly-crumpled hat obscuring his vision...
Ah...]
Got it...?
ii
I believe this is yours?
no subject
Yes.
[His awe doesn't get the entirety of him. Jack holds his right fist before him and bows.]
I am Jack, [Straightening back up, he holds out his hand. Either for the hat or a greeting.] and am very thankful for your assistance.
no subject
I am Angela.
[ Now that the formality of introductions are out of the way, onto business. ]
What will you give me in return for your hat?
no subject
[Oh. This isn't something he's anticipating at all. He has to take a second to think about the answer, but it all boils down to the same.]
I have no possessions to offer in exchange
[However, he does like the hat. It took him some work to put together.
Then his eyes widen as does his lips into a smile.]
I can teach you how to make them.
