riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

prompt vi: wildcard

[he beams for cassian's assessment of his parents because he's very proud of both of them, ok. as cassian takes a seat, he moves to sit next to him.]

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with stories from the war. Mostly ones about my parents, but they told me some other ones too. The rest I found out for myself when I got older. [that would be where he learned about rogue one because shara and kes weren't telling him that george rr martin shit as a bedtime story 👀 ] I think knowing our history is important.

[Cassian can't blame the son of two soldiers for being passionate about war, even if his own opinions on it were low. Poe was at least an intelligent man, and he can't imagine Kes letting him believe war was something great. He hopes not, at least.]

It is. It's the only way we can learn from the mistakes of the people who come before us.

Stories, though. [There's the faintest hope in that. Maybe, just maybe, the war had ended. Even if it's obvious conflict had not.] You weren't raised during war-times?
followhim: (who lives who dies who tells your story)

[personal profile] followhim 2017-05-21 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. [saves the part where history is sort of repeating itself for later ... like in a few minutes probably. sighs.]

No, I wasn't. I was born during the war — my grandpa raised me when I was a baby, but then my parents ended up retiring near the end of things. They got me back, settled on Yavin-4, and things were peaceful for a long time. It's only the last few years that conflicts have started arising again.

[For the briefest moment Cassian smiles, a small gesture but meaningful. For a time, there was peace. A chance for the children of some of his fellow rebels to raise their kids outside of a war. An opportunity for them to grow up in a galaxy hopefully better than the one he had. Not fighting constantly, not living glancing over their shoulder, waiting for death or worse to find them.

He didn't know what the peaceful times had been like, he couldn't even imagine it for himself, he only knew it was something he had spent his life fighting to help make happen. Something Draven had frequently assured him he was helping to make possible.]

That's when you decided to fight, then? [He could understand why, especially with who his parents were. Of course Poe would follow in their footsteps. Unfortunate, but if there was a new war brewing, better someone fight in it who understood the costs, even if only in theory. He felt sorry for Kes, having to see his son grow up to become a fighter. If Cassian had ever believed he could have a child, that would have been the last thing he wanted. It was all a lot to take in, and though he knows the answer, he retreats to a question somewhere closer to the realm of his understanding.]

The battle on Scarif, the plans?

The planetkiller was destroyed?

[He dares, for a moment longer, to hope that only Scarif and Jedha had been destroyed by the Empire's super weapon.]

I enlisted with the New Republic as soon as I was old enough. My mother always said that it was her duty, that she couldn't just stand by and do nothing while people were hurting. I guess it stuck with me. I wanted to help however I could, too.

[it only at that moment occurs to poe that … if cassian is here and alive … he must not know why he's a hero. he doesn't know what happened on scarif.]

The plans made it to the Rebellion. The Empire fired at the base on Scarif and missed — probably on purpose, to give their own people time. But everyone else … [like you and all y'all's friends…] I'm sorry.

The planet killer, or, um, Death Star, was destroyed because of the weaknesses in the plans you all got to the Rebellion. That's why you're heroes. I hope you find comfort in knowing that.

[thinks about fuckin starkiller base … and decides not to tell him right now. sighs.]
doandordie: (Time is running - Got to go)

[personal profile] doandordie 2017-05-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[He listens, offering a slight nod to the comments about Bey. It was a common sentiment among the Rebellion, and one Cassian respected and admired. For him, it had become in many ways an unending search to absolve his actions, or at the very least be able to feel that all the terrible things he had done were somehow worth it.

His shoulders fall, not out of disappointment, but something more like an internal collapse. The plans had made it, after all. They had succeeded in their mission. The planetkiller was destroyed. He tosses out the notion of heroism as soon as it comes, mentally dismissing it.]

We did what had to be done. Nothing more. [It didn't make them heroes. It just helped toward making their debts, their pasts, just a bit less weighted to the wrong side of blood spilled and actions taken.]

We knew what we were going into when we decided to take that mission on. Every member of that crew had their reasons for agreeing to take it on. [And with the exception of Bodhi, Cassian didn't think a single one of their crew had gone to Scarif expecting to leave it alive. And even Bodhi had known the chances were slim to none.]

Thank you, Dameron. I didn't expect to ever know if the plans made it. It's- [He falters, his words stopping, everything slowly clicking into place as his body and mind focus for a moment on the enormity of it all. Meeting Poe has forced him to stop long enough for the battle and Poe's words to really sink in and consume him. He visibly sinks back into the bench further and lets out a slow, heavy exhale, repeating the words a second time:]

Thank you.
followhim: (talk less smile more)

[personal profile] followhim 2017-05-23 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Of course. [since cassian seems ... well, emotionally compromised by all this brand new information, poe tries to be comforting by putting a hand against his shoulder. it's hard to turn down the hero worship for someone you never thought you'd actually meet alive, but thinking of leia staring at him like "boyyyyy u need to quit" helps a little bit.]

If you need anything around here, have any questions, anything, you can come to me, okay? And you can call me Poe.
doandordie: (12)

[personal profile] doandordie 2017-05-23 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
[It only takes him a few moments to pull it all back in and compose himself. When he does, he offers Poe a smile, warm and easy. It might be a facade at the moment, but the feelings behind it are genuine. It could all be a lie, but he doesn't think it is. Poe seems genuine, trustworthy. A dangerous man, but not a foolish one and not a needless liar.]

All right, Poe. I'll do that. [He'd like to ask about the new war, the causes, who was responsible, how the peace times had gone and what they were like. He holds off. It's a conversation likely best left for another time. For now, though.]

You've been here about a month? [Clarification, just in case he had been wrong about that detail.]

What do you make of this place?
followhim: (* everything around that's fucked up)

[personal profile] followhim 2017-05-23 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
[he nods to confirm, then continues with:] It's ... strange. There are a lot of things that are similar enough to home to seem familiar, but completely different. It's not a bad place. The people are friendly enough. There are threats from beyond the perimeter sometimes, but it's usually just wild animals.

[he doesn't want to launch into a full-blown catch-up yet because it's going to be a lot and he knows it, but if he doesn't say something now hux could worm his way in and it would be bad news bears for everyone.]

I have to tell you something. There's someone else from our world here. Someone from the First Order — the successor of the Empire in the war we're fighting now. He's a high ranking officer, and he's been quiet but I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

[coincidentally that would not be very far because hux is like twice poe's size but shut up ok]
