riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

( Damian had heard the creature coming. The way he stood and spun swiftly on his heel prepared to attack was evidence of that, but someone else was just a bit faster - saw it a couple of seconds before he reacted. It was a thought that made a mix of anger and frustration cloud his thoughts, and he watched as the monster turned and took off elsewhere.

The green eyes lingered on the bird for perhaps a few seconds longer before they darted towards his 'savior' to level them with a sharp, irritated glare. The words I didn't need your help were on his tongue, and the way he shifted back like an animal prepared to spring said he was already on the defensive. But that irritation vanished the instant his eyes landed on the familiar figure perched on the low rooftop.

His posture relaxed as he straightened, his expression softening slightly at the edges, and something in the green eyes said he was suddenly more at ease than he had been since he'd arrived here. A knot he had in his chest suddenly felt less tight and complicated, loosened by the realization that he wasn't alone. That one of people he trusted - perhaps more than anyone else - was here eased the childish part of himself he tried to bury deep behind too mature, too serious demeanor.
)

I could have handled it myself, Grayson. ( He finally managed, folding his arms across his chest. )

[ There's a flash of something in his face. He's had the same encounters here again and again. Missed connections. One-sided connections. That the first person he's run across in months who knows him by name is a kid he's never seen before, is...

Unfair is the word that comes to mind.

It's also not a discussion they can really have in the field. He hops down with a showy little flip, which is somehow easier right now than admitting that he really isn't sure how to navigate this. ]

I can see that. Your Robin-arangs are showing.

[ He looks younger up close than Dick had thought. So young it's startling. He's a child.

And he's suddenly, absurdly conscious of the danger around them. The danger to the boy. The unknown factor. He takes a breath. ]

You ready to set a trend? [ There's two more in that swarm. Dick tilts his head; a question. ]

( This wasn't Richard Grayson. This wasn't the man he'd fought alongside as Batman and Robin before his father had come back. This wasn't the man whose arms he leaped into after he'd thought Grayson had died.

This was a man who didn't recognize him. It was obvious in the lack of familiarity, the amount of time it took for Grayson to come down from the rooftop. There's no smile or grin, no joke or teasing. There's only a sort of friendly professionalism he's only ever seen Richard use on someone that he doesn't know.

If the situation were different, he would have addressed it immediately. But he didn't miss the birds coming towards them. His head turned in their direction, shifting only briefly back to Richard to nod.
)

I'm always ready. ( Was all he said before he was moving, taking off swiftly. If Richard watched him, he might have noticed a few things - there was a grace to his movements, an ease in the way he jumped and flipped that was similar to Dick, a swift and intensity that was remnant of training under Bruce, and a ferocity he still hadn't outgrown in his time with Batman.

Making his way towards the first bird, he wasted no time using his own grappling gun to swing him up to a higher ledge, kicking off of it to flip onto another, higher spot. Another jump and careful flip, and he wasted no time sending his batarangs flying towards the creature - satisfied with the sound of distress it made as he jerked sideways, caught off guard by the sudden impact. Landing in a neat, silent crouch, he turned his attention up towards the other creature expectantly.

Your move, Grayson.

[ Its never not a little startling to see his own signature there in someone else. But it's there in this boy. In his sharp grace and confidence. He sees Bruce too, eery shades of him, and he remembers the name Jason had given him. Damian Wayne.

But the boy is also himself. There's a style there all his own; a sureness that suggests a whole lot more experience than he would have assumed given... everything else he was told. Which is nothing, he's starting to realize, with an odd, sinking sensation. He knows nothing.

The kid's also left him an opening he's going to lose in a second. Dick breaks his reverie and swings back up towards the sky.

His style is close, so close to the other Dick Grayson's that differences only really show as shadows. But the years longer he'd had as Robin were years he hadn't had with the circus, and for this Dick Grayson those years had begun in childhood. The shades of Bruce run deeper, and there's a sharp precision to the way he dispatches the blow that knocks the final monster off its trajectory. It crashes into the fire escape with Dick still latched to his back, and this time he dives with an elaborate flip that's all Grayson. He lands with ease close to Damian, grinning now in spite of himself. The kid knows how to take point, alright. ]

Yes! Double play. [ For a moment his gloved hand comes out in a gesture that's almost a high five, before he abruptly thinks better of it and let's it drop.

After a moment: ]

...I was wondering if you'd see where I was going with that.

( As Damian watched Richard moved, the motions seemed to flow in slow motion. The grace and precision were undeniable. It fascinated Damian in its own way, how different Richard had always been compared to the Robins that followed him. The more he watched him, the more he was reminded of why he preferred Richard to so many others. There was something about the way he moved, how he carried himself - friendly but confident. Powerful enough in character and stature to wear his father's cowl.

When he finally landed, started to speak, Damian pulled himself from his thoughts to level the man with an even stare. It felt like he was watching a memory, the way Richard's hand moved before he dropped it. A high five that he would rarely, if ever, return. The Richard he was used to wouldn't have bothered with that sort of gesture when they'd moved past that.

This was a man whose arms he'd literally jumped into after finding out Richard had never died. They were beyond high fives and distant grins.
)

What's wrong with you? ( There was a sharpness to his tone, a way that said he wasn't interested in idle chit chat. He wanted an explanation, a hint of an understanding of why he hadn't been greeted properly. )

[ The question brings him up short, like a bucket of cold water. A reminder that while he'd been dazzled by this kid's knack for symmetry with his specific style, underneath it all is a little boy who... is clearly expecting something here that Dick can't begin to guess at. That he can't provide. It's a staggering thought.

He's thought about Damian, of course. Ruminated over him daily, almost hourly. Dealt with him again and again as a concept, as an abstract. Bruce's son or Tim's replacement. Not my brother. Not... whatever Dick Grayson had been or will be to this boy.

Dick takes a breath. The kid is direct. He owes him that in return. ]

...How much of the orientation spiel did you catch, this morning?

Where they explained the whole... alternate reality thing?
