riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

wildcard!

[ Self-preservation? Eh. Everyone needs to live a little.

It's part of the reason why Yuuto's climbed up, for similar reasons; it's hard to know what truly abandoned portions of a sprawling city look like without seeing it for yourself. And it's very... scenic, in a way, but also somewhat haunting. At least he doesn't plan on jumping in just yet. Perhaps eventually, but the circumstances are too new and strange to be diving in headfirst into the workings of this city right now.

So, a leisurely stroll along the walls will do. Yuuto makes it a point to avoid anyone who looks like they may be a part of the perimeter guard for the time being—and he's very good at sneaking around, these days—but a man up ahead... definitely didn't seem like one.

He pauses instead of passing by the man intently staring off, and likewise averts his gaze into the distance. If there's something out there, Yuuto isn't quite seeing it, but— ]

Nice view?

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
[ Yuuto's approach to the city was a wise one. Were Will thinking that far ahead, he might adopt the same conclusion, but for the moment he was too far into his own thoughts.

For the most part the guard had just left him alone. There had been a couple of questions, which Will had ignored for the most part, until the guard had just written him off as a befuddled new comer and left him alone. However, this meant that he gave a small jump when Yuuto's voice sounded just off to the side.

It wasn't any sort of drastic startle, more a small jerk of his shoulders as he fell back into the present and turned to look at the speaker. ]

Hmm? [ Will made an inquiring noise, as his brain caught up with the question and he looked back out over the forest. ] A nice view? I suppose that depends upon what you like to look at?

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ He isn't surprised to see the man was so engrossed in his own thoughts that he was jerked out of them in such a manner. It leaves Yuuto wondering what he was thinking.

But that aside, the question posed leaves him considering the vast forest before them, taking a moment to put thoughts into words. ]

It's... [ Hm. ] Picturesque. [ It's difficult not to be impressed by it, really. ] Do you think so?

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ As Yuuto began to speak, Will turned back to him, giving him his full attention. ]

Picturesque. [ He repeated the word, rolling it on his tongue as if tasting it for an appropriate flavor. ]

It's noisy. [ He determined, after a long minute. ] Crowded.

Like what resides within the walls; a plethora of unknowns all clamoring together.

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well. If there was ever a moment that'll define these two live on different wavelengths, this might be it.

Yuuto regards him with mild surprise behind the shaggy hair and brim of his glasses; he had to admit, it was a totally unexpected response. Then again, feeling overwhelmed by an unfamiliar, big city is a familiar one to him, and not just from this one. Despite his subtle shift in expression, Yuuto tries to appear muted about it. ]

... Not a fan then, I take it.

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ Were he privy to such thoughts, Will would probably agree that Yuuto was better off not being on his wavelength. It wasn't a particularly comfortable mental path to traverse.

The statement caught him up, anchored him back to the moment and Will gave a quick quirk of his lips. ]

Did I give that impression?

If you're asking whether I'm a fan of falling through portals into completely unknown dimensions, away from the reality I've lived for all of my life, then I'll have to agree with you. I'm not a fan.

Would you call yourself a 'fan'?

maskerading: (pic#11290707)

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-21 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Okay, point. For as much as he can take a bad situation in stride, the circumstances were far from ideal. He gets that, really.

(But at least he knows a nice tree when he sees one, okay.)

Yuuto shifts on his feet, adjusting his glasses simply because it gave his hand something to do in the moment. ]

... No, not really. [ At least when he hops through dimensions back home, he has a surefire way to get back. Not this time, though. ] Sorry, it wasn't my intention to assume. You just seemed pretty focused on the forest.

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I was looking for the monsters. [ He explained, voice lowering as if whispering might coax the monsters to come out and reveal themselves.

As if saying the word 'monster' reminded him, Will cast a glance towards the sky, no pterodactyls in sight. Then back to Yuuto. ]

Occupational hazard. Studying monsters is what I do back home.

What do you do? Back in your world.
maskerading: (pic#11287491)

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. Huh. He supposes that makes enough sense; a monster scientist(?) would take interest in the area beyond the walls, obviously. ]

I'm a high school student.

[ ... Who moonlights as a thief performing all sorts of criminal activity, buuut that's not a detail anyone needs to know about right now. Even now, he puts up the ruse he's just a normal kid. Better safe than sorry. ]

Which sounds kind of lame next to "guy who studies monsters".

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ Will gave a soft chuckle and a small shrug. ]

I wouldn't say that. Just means you've got all the choices ahead of you to decide what you want to do.

[ He takes a minute, possibly trying to recall his own thought process back when he was in high school. It definitely hadn't been to get in the minds of serial killers. But that was a bit of a heavy topic for a random conversation. ]

Have you given it any consideration?
maskerading: (pic#11329786)

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-21 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ The future ahead of him. It isn't the first time he's heard this, and it's a little daunting, sometimes. And who knew how events back home would wrap up, for as much as they were escalating, but all that's put on hold so long as he remains here.

Yuuto gives a thoughtful hum of his own. ]

A little, but it's pretty tough. I'm kind of jealous of classmates who have it all figured out already.

[ A comment made mostly for the sake of conversation, really, but it's not a complete lie, at least. ]

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Will's lips twitched, though his expression was not unkind as he looked Yuuto in the eyes for a moment, before his gaze skipped off to the side. ]

I'm a teacher, back in my world. [ He explained. ] My classroom is full of adults, and I can tell you that none of them have it figured out as completely as they like you to believe.

[ The unspoken suggestion being, perhaps Yuuto didn't need to be jealous of what wasn't really there in his classmates. ]
maskerading: (pic#11418732)

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-22 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ A teacher who also studies monsters. You're a busy guy, Will. ]

It's true. They really do like to give that impression. [ He lets out a short, small laugh with a dismissive wave of his hand. ] I'm not too worried about it—that's a bridge to cross once I'm not so occupied with homework and exams.

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well, to be fair he teaches how to hunt monsters so it kinda goes hand in hand.

Will finds himself momentarily at a loss as to how to respond to Yuuto's comment about homework and exams. Though he gives the men and women who take his class case studies to write upon, it's not exactly the same as algebra problems.

And it feels like a lifetime since he had to navigate either homework or exams. ]

Did the homework and exams follow you through the portal?

maskerading: (pic#11363147)

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-22 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ Well. Okay. Yuuto puts on a slight grimace. ]

I sure hope they didn't.

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-23 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
[ Will gave it a moment to consider that and then nodded in a mute agreement. Though at this point he wasn't quite sure what else to say to the teen. He rarely managed when speaking at people his own age, let alone teenagers. ]
maskerading: (pic#11363151)

[personal profile] maskerading 2017-05-23 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
[ He gets that; quiet is a trait they may both share. So he adds, lightly and casually: ]

... But probably not. [ It definitely didn't. ] I'll have to go back to a huge pile of it waiting for me instead.

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-26 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The comment sounds so much like the mutter grumbles he hears from his own students (even if they are eager adults) that he chuckles with a soft sort of understanding. ]

No doubt. Homework tends to multiply, if you turn your back on it. I often felt that way about the papers I had to grade.
