● Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on March 1st.
● All threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon once the game is up and running.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

information resources

premisearrivalsettingask a questionnavigation

prompt i: batten down the hatches

If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.

The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!

prompt ii: monster madness

There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.

The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.

The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.

The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.

prompt iii: hold your lover close

With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.

There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.

The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.

prompt iv: solution

After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.

The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.

From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.

Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.

This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.

prompt v: wildcard/network

Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.

Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

[Steve is right alongside her, moving sandbags by the armful to help unblock houses and build up their wall. He gives her a pleased look, but at least he doesn't say anything about her obvious exasperation. He just lets her have her moment without the nagging voice of optimism at her back and makes the work go faster by lending his hands for the task. Once they've moved a good amount, he goes back to check on her.]

They don't look so mad now.

[See? She can be a hero. He's going to make that point with the usual quiet confidence he has for these things.]

[Steve would rather intimidate the animal than really hurt it. While he doesn't want it to rampage through Quarantine and hurt innocent people, he thinks that the chance of driving the mountain lion away is a risk they can take. It's only scared, after all. It isn't hunting them. He glances toward Adam, nodding, then jumping to the right at his word. The mountain lion roars, instinctively making a lunge at them, but the way they move in opposite directions confuses it and causes the cat to miss its targets. Steve turns around, raising his arm and activating the energy shield projected from his wrist cuff. The flash of light and color gets the attention of the big cat, and Steve holds up the shield in front of him, advancing so he can give Adam an opening to drive the predator back to the woods.]

[A housewife, and she's missing her husband. Steve thinks that he should probably stick around to help her out. If nothing else, he owes her for bailing him out of the awkward situation. But leaving Letha in a potentially dangerous place alone also bothers him on principle.]

I work with the government. I handle investigations.

[Errands, really. He can't help but feel that Fury treats him like a personal agent.]

While I'm here, I guess I'm keeping animals out of town.

"Throwing monsters without touching them," she supplied. Which was the tip of the iceberg of her abilities, but that seemed like a safe place to start, since he'd already seen it.

And, you know, hadn't gone screaming for the hills or whatever.

She raised her right shoulder, then dropped it. "I wouldn't say it's common in my world. But not impossible either. And I've been studying since I was a wee, bitty little Fatima."

So much for keeping her name to herself.

Not a big deal, really.

[ if there's anything he's learned through the years, it's that nothing ringers truer than the old adage of strength in numbers. he holds her hand a moment, his own surprisingly cold to the touch. her grip is firm, steady. ]

Just a little more impressive. I heal, but could blow a thing or two up if it comes down to it.

[ he doesn't like it. he tries to avoid it, but sometimes the fight is inevitable and you have to get dirty some days even though you don't quite want to. he extinguishes the small light with a pinch of his fingers together, smiling. ]

Investigations? Well, doesn't that sound exciting.

[She doesn't usually hear of that as a job - investigating much of anything is considered a punishable offense in her hometown.]

I wouldn't mind hearing a few stories about that... I'd never traveled outside of Thornwell before I came here.

[Energon levels. Good grief.]

It's nice when we can, yeah.

[Though as she can attest to, one can still live a less than satisfactory life if they don't. Her time having to survive in a world full of zombies has left her with a few skills, at least.]

I stocked up the moment I saw a sandwich, so I'm good. [She doesn't share the amount she has. Old habits.] Where I'm from you didn't take food for granted.

[Steve is momentarily caught off-guard as well, unable to really say anything as Sam puts an arm around him and leads him away from the annoying man that now looks completely disgruntled that his intended customer is getting away. He doesn't even get a chance to follow up on his offers after Sam whisks Steve off, and Steve makes his escape willingly, quietly smirking when Sam drops his arm to complain.]

Mm. He really seemed invested in getting more business. Thanks for the rescue, "honey".
livingsymbol: ([S] You want to put that where?)

[personal profile] livingsymbol 2017-03-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably should.

[Steve agrees, because he honestly was considering just forcing the device open by breaking it. But he thankfully also considered that damaging the strange pyramid while it was running might make whatever it was doing worse. He stands behind Bucky, frowning at the perfectly smooth sides.]

It looks like it's made of one solid piece.

[Taking up position next to his friend, Steve kneels down to try to find a line or switch to open up the machine. His fingers run over the sides of it, trying to catch any imperfection with his nails.]

Maybe we need a key.

That's a tricky question, Caitlin thinks to herself. There are a lot of things she could speculate, but she's not really sure where to settle for a response because she doesn't know enough about this place yet to be sure. The thing is, there are an infinite number of possibilities and that sort of array of choices always tends to be the sort of thing that locks Caitlin up a little. She is forever a victim of the Paradox of Choice.

So she waits for a moment, considering quietly as they walk, and the expression on her face does at least suggest that introspection with the way that she chews thoughtfully on her bottom lip and her brow creases. "I mean, honestly, I don't know enough about this place to know if my speculations would even be applicable here; I can only go by what would be potentially possible back home. So that means it could be anything from this place's equivalent of climate change to a metahuman manipulating the atmosphere to create a distraction meant to keep from being caught doing something he or she shouldn't be doing."

Caitlin pauses there, looking over at him rather than just in front of herself, and she reaches a hand up to push more wet hair off her face as they catch up with the rest of the group. "But I don't know, obviously, for sure. It does admittedly remind me of something that happened back home which could suggest the latter, but..." her voice trails off and she shrugs.

Somehow it feels like expanding on that in the presence of the rest of the group is a bad idea. For all she knows, she could cause a panic over nothing. This could be a natural weather occurrence that just happens to be enough of an anomaly that the locals are uncomfortable with it. There's no point in unnecessarily stirring up worry in the whole of the group if she doesn't know; she's just guessing.

Caitlin's expression shifts into something more endeared — although admittedly, that endeared expression is there only because it's beat out the apologetic one — when Ray asks whether that was okay.

The honest answer? No. Not even a little bit, but not because she's offended or put off. It wasn't okay because now all she can think about is whether or not Felicity would still want to be her friend if she found out that Caitlin was going around kissing her ex-boyfriend just to get into a dance class. She's wondering whether Cisco would flip out because he idolized Ray. She's wondering whether Julian would care...and then she's wondering why she should care if Julian would care. It's all really confusing when she lets herself think about it.

Instead of telling him any of that, because literally none of it pertains directly to the kiss itself, Caitlin gives Ray a small smile and a nod. "No, it's fine, it's...don't worry about it. We probably should've seen that request coming," she says with a soft laugh. "It's okay, Ray." A little bit of color creeps into Caitlin's cheeks and she tucks her hair behind her ears again. "You're very good at that," she adds, looking sheepishly up at him. "I mean, not that I thought you wouldn't be. Or...would. I don't..." She pauses, realizing how awkward she's sounding and gives herself a second to collect her thoughts before continuing. "It isn't like I was ever really thinking about whether or not you would be a good kisser, I meant. But that was kind of nice. It's really okay. We're okay...I mean, right? We're good?"

[come on sam, you have the (mis)fortune of knowing steve rogers better than most, which means you already know the answer to that question. he hesitates at the offered gun before accepting it. it just doesn't have the same familiar weight to it, and the only option it gives him is pulling the trigger. he doesn't regret that he gave up the shield, he regrets that he had to.]

I wouldn't worry too much about the teeth. [steve smirks in the other man's direction, and that's always a bad sign.] I'm the bigger mouthful here. They'll go straight for me. Just make sure you take them down when they do.

Cecelia really shouldn't be here. She's no fighter, but desperate times and all that. She holds a gun in her hand, but has only seen it fired as a demonstration on how to use it. The creatures breaching the fence have her frozen in fear, not knowing what to do. Before arriving here she was a widow on an estate in Lancashire. This is not her domain! Of course, she herself is no ordinary woman. All women have their secrets, but hers is a little more... animal in nature. So as the fence is breached, some small part of her mind wonders if this is what she looks like during the full moon.

Yet at the shout of a stranger, Cecelia's body responds and she hits the ground, head tilting up to see the flames shoot over her and onto the beast.

"Good God!" she cries out, horrified by the sight of it burning.

Consider it yours, then. Draw whatever you'd like.

[He gets up from the place he'd taken at Clark's side. He is slow about it, which may be mistaken for a disarming lack of wariness. Certainly he does not move like anything ails him. Yet, he is a man well-traveled and often injured, and the cold and the wet have sunk into his bones.

He feels old. And he is, for a pirate. The most reputable among them have often made their name before they were ten-and-twenty. Few can contend with the time on Earth that Teach and Hornigold had. Flint is nearly forty, and he knows damn well he doesn't heal like he used to.

It's cause for a pensive silence as he sits back down beside the cookstove. He shuts it off, stretches one leg out and leans his hand on his knee.]

What are the people like, in your time?

[Are they free? He wants to ask, refrains. He knows too much of human nature to be uncertain of the answer, yet hope persists in dark places.]

[personal profile] diagenesis 2017-03-03 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
[He can extrapolate. She's a fighter, presumably. A few scars. This fixation on arrows. Archers always are stronger than they look, it takes more effort to hold back the drawstring of a bow than to swing a sword in most cases, especially where patience is involved. He knows better than to underestimate a woman at war.

What needs doing is just vague enough to imply killing people. He makes a noise, sort of a hrm that's really just a deep rumble of sound in his chest.]

The right people, presumably. Tell you.

['Spooked' ain't the fucking half of it, but Flint is nothing if not terrifyingly capable of tamping down his emotions until at best his interest seems entirely academic, and his fears entirely absent.

He's the son of a carpenter, who was the son of a fisherman. He knows something of being raised to a trade.]

Seems a grim line of work. But I imagine you can bring-- closure to a lot of people.

[It's a skill he could most certainly use to his advantage back home in Nassau, if such a thing were true to the fabric of the world there.]

[ Clark tracks him by sound, alert for some illness in the body. Somewhere Flint himself might not know to look. Medicine has progressed since that time, and Clark has a useful X-ray machine in his eyes.

He folds the notebook in half, smooths the page, and starts with a cross-section of Sputnik. The sketch, in-progress, is clearly visible to Flint. ]

That's a broad question.

[ Clark looks over at him. ]

What are you thinking about, specifically?

[He'll find myriad things in doing so. Old breaks that healed poorly, fragmented bits of shrapnel in a dozen places, long healed and enfolded into muscle. No illnesses to speak of, he's as hale as he's ever been, but piracy is not kind.]

Mm.

[He lifts his glass to his lips, but the drink he takes is shallow.]

What do you know of the 1700s? Perhaps it's easier a thing to reverse engineer than explain outright.

[Of course he does, which is why he's making Steve take a gun anyway. For his own peace of mind, if nothing else. Sure, he knows Steve can probably punch one of these monsters - whatever they are - to a pulp, but that doesn't mean it'll necessarily be the best option.]

Who said I was even gonna get close enough to worry about the teeth? They'll be chasing after a dinner of grade-A dumbass. [Sam grins back at him, an answer to that smirk - a facial expression he's more than familiar with when it comes to Steve. It means that he's about to do something goddamn stupid, and Sam's just going to follow him and make sure he doesn't get torn into pieces. That's the goal, anyway.] Unlike some people I could name, I know when to keep my distance.

Sorry to say I'm not extremely familiar.

No, you don't have to be. Those were my areas of contention.

[He leans forward, props his chin in his hand. Rubs his thumb absently through the bristles of his beard.]

I'm aware that little changes in my lifetime, but it's been a dearly-held hope of mine that one day all people might live equally. I'm curious as to whether or not that's a viable possibility in your time.
