If the sky has seemed a little more yellow-green than usual for the past couple of days, there's a reason for that. Meteorologists have been warning of a particularly nasty storm blowing in from the direction of the Delta in the Southwestern part of the Abandoned City.
The Quarantine is about to be hit by a nasty typhoon, and there's a lot to be done. Whether you're helping sandbag the banks of the river, which is bound to be swollen by the storm and flooding, weatherproofing your building, or just huddling indoors for warmth and helping reassure your friends, family, or partner that everything will be okay, it's time to take action!
There's been a lot of talk around the Quarantine about the various predators and monsters outside the fence, and how they've been getting steadily more active, crowding the fences, trying to leap over them, seemingly driven by some kind of mania. There have even been increasing instances of predators that normally mind their own business attacking the fences wholesale, slamming into it over and over as if they're trying to find a weakness.
The good news? The fences have been holding. So far.
The bad news? They won't be holding for much longer.
The Perimeter Guard is in a bad way, and it's all hands on deck. They've also sent out a few of the Perimeter Guard Cadets to post up flyers around the city asking for temporary help in fighting off the beasts. So pick up whatever weapon you're best with, hop onto a truck transport, and head on over to the fences to help drive off the monsters and keep the Quarantine safe.
With a storm rolling in that's going to keep everyone indoors, that might cause power outages, and is just frankly pretty scary, a lot of the clubs, restaurants, and hotels are doing special events to keep everyone's brains occupied and flooded with endorphins.
There are flyers around the city advertising various couples activities: speed dating, dance classes, overnight pool parties, and all-expenses-paid lovers' nights in.
The catch? The great deals only count if you're a twosome. So if you don't have someone to love, hit up speed dating in the indoor courtyard of Riverview's largest mall, or grab the first person you see and take the opportunity.
After a day or two of storm activity, things are definitely not getting better: the rain is torrential, the monsters are attacking with increased energy and decreased rest times, and the distractions are starting to wear thin. Power outages happen off and on, a very rare situation in Riverview Quarantine.
The government has put out an all-points-bulletin imploring anyone with an exploratory spirit to help.
From what government science techs can tell, the storm isn't natural - after all, even the meteorologists were saying that the pressure systems seemed extremely strange. They've managed to narrow the cause to an area in the delta where the storm seems to be originating from, and are broadcasting the general location so anyone with the guts can head out into the storm and try to find the source of it.
Any characters who decide to penetrate the jungle in search of the source will find a device in the shape of a pyramid, with glowing blue edges about a day's walk into the Abandoned City. The pyramid is a malfunctioning weather control device that is causing wild pressure fluctuations and causing the storm as well as making the animals in the jungle aggressive and erratic. Characters can destroy or deactivate the device to end the storm.
This mission can be threaded out however you would like, in groups however large you would like, and more than one team can accomplish the goal.
Whether you're looking for help with a mission or just want to get to know your fellow new arrivals, your character can make a post to the network.
Or you can choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

[ His mother language returned, swearing at the other loudly enough to be heard, no mistake that he meant for the other to hear it, but not shouted as before. Yuri has bigger things to worry about in that moment, after all. The monsters are still coming over the fence, and if he lets himself think too hard about anything else- he's not sure what he'll do. He's still not sure how to compartmentalize what he's doing; that he killed something. And he did, the corpse is right there- off to his left, his spear bloody, his shoes bloody.
He loses himself to the rhythm of it, his arms shaking with effort, losing strength by the end. His strengths have always lay in his legs, and suddenly he's realizing the importance of arm days, after all. There comes a point where it's all he can do to continue to pick his spear up again. It becomes lodged in the corpse of a dead monster, and he can't manage to pull it out. Another monster comes for him, snarling and snapping and all Yuri can do is shout, levering himself off the embedded spear to kick out, hitting it so hard in the jaw that it's head snaps to the side, momentarily stunned. The action had looked more like a gymnasts move; a dancer's. But it won't be enough to keep him alive. ]

He just offers the swearing a quick two-fingered salute before he leaps back into the fray. The monsters seem to keep coming, for much longer than he expected them to, maybe hearing the noise or smelling the blood in the air. Bucky fights like a machine, relentless and ruthless against non-human opponents. Remorseless. He saves his sympathy for his human victims.
His suit is sprayed with greenish blood by the time the flow starts to ebb, his shield is caked in gore and the clip in his gun is empty. Bucky's head whips up when he hears the commotion, the shout. It takes about a second to assess the situation - Yuri's spear is stuck, and while his foot connected but good with the creature's jaw, it wasn't a hard enough hit to disable it for long. Bucky grabs up the shield and he rushes the beast from the side, hard, like a battering ram, knocking it out of Yuri's path.
It reacts quickly, gnashing teeth and lunging, and Bucky catches its snapping jaw on his prosthetic arm, delivering a hard punch to the throat with the other.]

It's like in competitions; Yuri doesn't need to think. After practicing the routine enough, it's secondary nature. His body simply acts.
The spear stays where it is, he can't get it out. It won't help him now. He's unarmed, so he has to be smart about this- but before he's really put too much thought about it he breaks into a run, and jumps.
He isn't heavy enough to bring the thing down, can only lock his knees on either side of it's back, his arms around it's neck as it lets out a roar, momentarily distracted from Bucky's exposed back, far more interested in trying to throw Yuri off. But Yuri is determined, his legs are strong- and he holds on tight. ]
no subject
A roar from behind. His back unprotected. The soft thud of a body leaping and then the heavier footfalls of another monster thrashing about trying to dislodge a nuisance. Yuri.
Bucky lets out a yell of his own, jamming his metal palm farther back into the thing's mouth, where the tongue and throat are unprotected. His arm discharges electricity and in the moist, soft atmosphere, it fries from the inside out with a horrible screeching noise. Finally he can wrench his arm out of its maw as it falls backward with a thud, and then he rounds on the other monster, Yuri still clinging to its back.]
Catch! Get between vertebrae! [Normally one throws a knife blade first, but this time, he tosses the heavy-duty bowie knife still in sheath to the kid. Bucky is cautious about trying to take it down himself like this, afraid it will topple backward and crush Yuri.]
no subject
Yuri does as he's told, snapping the knife down with as much force as he can muster between the vertebrae of the creature's neck; pulls the knife back, does it again, a little higher. Tears it free again and this time twists to the right; goes for the jugular for good measure, a green spray of blood and an ugly cry rent from the creatures lips, before it crashes forward into the ground. Then, and only then, does Yuri let go. Shaking and stumbling away, his legs not quite able to hold themselves up, falling to his knees and pushing through the dirt to get further away, spitting the sheath into the dirt as he sits down heavily, panting and shaking as blood runs down his arm.
That, at least, seemed to have been the last of them for now. The cries and clash of battle and the roar of monster screams further, and further away- until everything goes oddly quiet. And then, began the slow patter of rain. ]
no subject
It seems safe for now. The noise dies down, leaving just the sound of wet rain and harsh breathing, the smell of acrid green blood.
Finally, he crosses the clearing to Yuri, stooping down on one knee and frowning slightly when he spots red blood, the kid's blood. He hasn't lost his adrenaline yet; he's been trained not to collapse immediately after a battle, because an end to the fighting doesn't mean an end to the work.]
Here, let me see.
no subject
He jerked back as Bucky came closer, before cringing at his own reaction, squeezing his eyes shut, trying to stop, trying to focus. Numbly he nodded, before lifting his bloodied, shaking arm, offering it out to the other. It didn't hurt, and he found that strange. He felt far away from it; distanced. He knew that was because of the adrenaline, he'd hurt himself in practice before, and had had similar feelings. This, though, was different. He had to bite down on his tongue to keep from whimpering when he opened his eyes again, staring down the damage.
The scratches were deep enough to scar, probably warranting stitches- but nothing he wouldn't recover from, at least. The sight of them still made what little colour Yuri had drain from his face, though. ]
I'm all right. [ he blurts out, but it sounds small even to his own ears. Soft, tight with nervousness and the beginning edges of shock from all he had done. All he had seen. ] I've never- [ His gaze trailed towards the monster he'd stabbed with the knife, his throat tight. ] I've never killed anything before.
no subject
He takes his arm in his flesh and rolls up his sleeve carefully with metal fingers. They're deep, will probably need stitches, but Bucky doesn't have the supplies for that. At least he has something in the way of first aid in one of his belt pouches, just a few emergency supplies.]
You're all right. [He agrees mildly, voice low and calm. The area is secured, there's nothing more to fear. (It's not entirely secure, but he's keeping an ear cocked.)] We'll get this taken care of back in the city. I'm going to wrap it for now.
[He opens the flap on a pouch and draws out small-folded, tightly rolled pads and gauze, thankful for the minor cover of tree foliage to keep them mostly dry. He presses a pad to the wounds first.] Here, put pressure on this. You did good today, Ice Tiger.
no subject
Okay, okay. Yeah. I can do that. [ Yuri has to switch the knife from one hand, to the other to do so- and gripping it with his injured arm causes more blood to surface, running down his arm. Yuri watches, and wonders what it says about himself that he's oddly fascinated to see it.
He has to keep reminding himself to breath, as he brings his hand over the wounds, presses down as hard as he can stand, hissing through his teeth as he does. ]
You didn't do so badly yourself, old geezer. [ He adds, a little lamely. Knowing well enough that if not for Bucky watching his back, he probably would have been monster chow. ]
no subject
He gently uncurls his fingers from around the handle of the knife, sets it in the dirt within easy reach.] Area's clear for now. You're alright. We need to stop the bleeding now. [He frames it as a task, a goal.
While Yuri presses down on the pad, Bucky starts unrolling the tight roll of gauze. He doesn't have much in the way of antiseptic or anything, and he wishes he had a bottle of water to rinse off some of this blood, but instead all he can do after a moment is move Yuri's hand again and draw his arm out to the side, into a little trickle of rain coming down through the leaves.] I don't have anything to clean it with, so we're going back to the trucks right after this. This'll have to do for now.
no subject
It's fine. [ He finally manages, voice low. He takes a deep breath, suddenly wanting to get up, stand up. Maybe start running, do something, he doesn't know what. But he knows that it isn't the right decision, not right then. So he waits, and lets Bucky finish what he's doing first, knocking his head back and sucking in sharp, shuddering breaths. ]
no subject
The transport truck is about half a mile back. Do you think you can make it? [No shame in it if he can't. He's light enough that Bucky can carry him easily.]
no subject
It was a good thing he was too numb to start overthinking it. Otherwise he might have been starting to spew things about werewolf bites, and working himself into some sort of panic. Instead, he pushed himself up onto his feet. Wobbling a little, but managing well enough. ]
I need to walk. [ And he did, he needed something to help him buzz out the last excess of energy, and calm down. ]
no subject
He nods and lets him stand. Yuri wobbles, but Bucky doesn't move to catch him unless he desperately seems to need it, and so far, he seems okay. As okay as he can be. Bucky slings his shield over his back and loads another clip into his gun, and then he picks up the bowie knife, holding it out to Yuri handle first.] Hang on to this for now. C'mon, let's move out before the bodies draw predators.
no subject
Sorry- [ He manages out, gripping the knife as tightly as he can with his injured arm. Switching back to English, because maybe that will make everything feel a little less real. It doesn't, but it was a nice thought. ] Sorry, it's just... its been a very strange day.
no subject
It's okay. Civilians usually aren't used to this kind of thing. [He says it a little wryly, his tone prodding at the fact that Yuri ended up out here at all when he doesn't have the training.] You move well, though. Some sort of athlete?
no subject
That obvious? [ He asked, voice small, expression pinched- but he managed a small quirk of his lips, too. Trying not to be to embarrassed by his performance on an actual battlefield. Already berating himself for stupid mistakes, as he started to go over his actions in his head. He let out a shuddering breath, glancing away once more and gazing back towards the city. ]
A figure skater. [ He admits. It's funny, he's never been ashamed of what he does before- and it isn't that he's ashamed now, not really- it's just... different. Different from how he want to come across, not wanting to be seen as dainty or delicate like his stature. He wants to be seen as strong. ] Gold medalist in my senior grand prix debut, likely in line to join the olympic team.
no subject
I never kept up with the sport. Has a lot in common with ballet, though, doesn't it? [Natasha had danced, he thinks. A cover story, no doubt, but one she sometimes still remembered as her own.] If you plan to make this a habit, come and see me. I can show you a few things. You have a decent foundation for combat.
no subject
I want to learn. [ He says it without doubt or hesitation, that hot spike of determination and drive rocking through him. That sense of want that came with skating; a desire to be better. To be the best that he could be. ] I'll find you. You'll teach me.
[ Bucky had offered, and now with Yuri's determined demand, there was no getting out of it, either. ]
no subject
[Back in the Red Room, with harsher methods than he will ever use on Yuri Plisetsky. He doesn't train killers anymore. He only wants to teach self-defense.]
I will. [He agrees, and finally they come up within sight of the transport trucks. Bucky nods at Yuri once and then peels off to go talk to one of the drivers, motioning to Yuri's shoddily-bandaged arm.] He'll take you back to the hospital.
no subject
See you later, James. [ It was as much of a goodbye as Bucky was going to get out of Yuri, and he made his way over to the truck. Climbing in the back where he was directed to head back into town, and get the stitches he needed. ]
