riverview: may test drive meme

riverview test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!

Reserves are currently OPEN.
Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.

Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

prompt i: search & rescue

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.

Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.

This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!

prompt ii: death from above

Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.

The problem with walls? They only go so high.

While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.

prompt iii: homesick bazaar

Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.

Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!

prompt iv: prijata pregaming

Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.

This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.

prompt v: friendr/network

Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.

Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.

Code to post your character's bio is in the textbox below, or you can just do a text version of the information in the app. An example of how it looks can be found here.

Many thanks to [personal profile] mistojen for coding this especially for Riverview!

prompt vi: wildcard

Choose your own adventure and do something else in the setting!

[ Right, okay. Skittish it is. She can deal. He's actually still talking to her, which is points in Anderson's incredibly low standards for other people. If they aren't a violent criminal and they aren't actively insulting her, she's good.

Part of the problem with making herself so untouchable to her work is that now she doesn't care even when she probably should. ]

Any book suggestions? [ Let's just say censorship is likely to be a thing back home. And-- right, fishing. Large bodies of water are clean here, and have things living in them. That's about all the opening up she's ready to do for now, though, so she doesn't say what she's thinking. Instead: ] Peaceful, non-violent occupations. I could get behind that.

Yes. And I worry who will guard her now that I am here.

[Weren't all Men dirty liars?]

[ If pressed on the subject, Will would insist it was the barking dog and not the man crashing atop the platform with him, that caught his attention first. He hadn't encountered a dog here yet and immediately he shook his hands free of his pockets and walked over to the edge to look down at the canine. ]

Hey fella. [ He called down, using that sing-song voice that was intended to sooth but at the same time held a suggestion of command to it as well. ] Shhh, shhh that's enough.

[ No idea if the tone worked on alien dogs and his attention was being drawn back to Finn anyway. Studying the man for a moment, Will ducked his chin and smirked slightly, before looking back up. His eyes didn't remain on Finn's face for long but his expression was not unkind. ]

Safe to assume he's not yours?

I am not. I have not come across one who does not seem to have also been brought here with no cause. I wonder if there are those that are native, or if we are all merely strangers from other lands.

I thought monsters weren't supposed to get over the wall!

[ She's shouting it over the sound of panic as pterodactyl satan and his buddies up there go all divebomb happy. Rey's fumbling with the stuPID SAFETY on her blaster and tbh wondering why she ever turned it on. ]

[He holds the fruit like it's something precious, a resource he isn't used to having, and she finds that a little saddening. Surely here there weren't instances of people going without, were there? She hoped not.

He holds out a small book to her in a language she's not familiar with, but she is fae and loves to acquire knowledge, so she takes it with a small smile and a careful nod of her head.]

It would be a pleasure. I have not had an instance to read the lore of this land as of yet. Perhaps this will be a stepping stone to that.

I am Maleficent.

[Also socially awkward and abrupt, but less likely to come across as that and more likely to seem just snobby. It was a fae thing. Really.]

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The 'violent criminal' part of that sentence was where the shades of grey got messy in this equation. Best for both of them to shelve it for now. ]

Depends. What would you like to read about? [ Maybe he should have investigate the local library (was there a library?) before making this offer. Oh well. ]

The fish might disagree with you there. People back home would term them more as solitary pursuits. I am something of a loner back home.

[ At first glance, she does give off that intimidating look—and he isn't quite used to seeing someone walk around with what's so obviously a handgun like it's nothing. (Besides himself, okay, that's different.) But Yuuto's good at playing it cool, and her current demeanor gives off anything but an intimidating vibe, awed and curious rather than stern and sharp tongued. It certainly makes a person easier to approach, regardless of how they dress. ]

—Really? [ Yet her response is... curious. A touch concerning, even, because the implications of that are never good. The shift in his own expression remains subtle, however. ] ... Well, there's ways to decide. Like eeny-meenie-minie-moe.

Tch. I knew this was gonna happen!

[ Roars a man wearing far less for armor than she is. He looks like a thug with the leather and wild hair, skin scarred and heavily inked. He also appears to be carrying a wide-bladed sword even bigger than his impressive height. He flattens himself against a wall not to far from her, and it's her padded armor and that practiced, military poise she has with her firearm at the ready that grabs his attention. ]

Oi!

[ Oh look, said thug appears to be yelling at you, Judge. And for the moment fails to notice the rapid decent of a flying monster zeroing in on his position. There's a lot going on, and Gladio's distracted by the chaos. ]

You with the guard? Police?

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 'most cops aren't exactly great people'. Yeeeaaahhh a case could be made for that, depending upon what side of his particular adventures you found yourself on. ]

Oh? What would be a better way to use my time?

[That earned him a laugh, and in answer, Maleficent held up her hand with a peach pit in it. In a moment of gold sparkles and magic, the pit was a full, luscious peach, looking like it would burst its juices by just eyeballing it. She held it out to him, gold trailing out to wind around his arm and lace it with a winding vine that bound along his sleeve, blooming bright gold flowers that smelled of honey.]

Will that do, you greedy thing?

[personal profile] precog 2017-05-21 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Energy parasites? Starships? Okay, so this guy definitely isn't from her version of Earth. No problem there. She shrugs a little in response to his question, trying to play it cool.]

I've survived worse.

[Casual and aloof is the way to play it with adults she doesn't know. She can't let a stranger know she had been a little worried about staying alive. It's time to cover up her fear and worry with sarcasm.]

If you want gratitude, daring heroics might not be the right job for you.
desertdeserter: (9. Nah)

[personal profile] desertdeserter 2017-05-21 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Where Finn comes from, dogs look very different and the unfamiliar creature that had been hot on his heels seemed as dangerous as the ones in the sky. Catching his breath, he shifted into a sitting position instead of sprawled on the wall, staring down at the dog that was already losing interest in the man it had chased up the wall like a squirrel up a tree.

It's a little embarrassing now that he knows someone saw it, though even he's impressed at the time he made scaling the wall, imaging the score he would have gotten during training exercises.]

Mine? That thing wants to eat me. Did you see the teeth?
curser: (Smile - 3)

[personal profile] curser 2017-05-21 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Fire-arm.

[It didn't look very fiery, or very arm-like, but humans were strange creatures and she'd long since just accepted that they would do strange things. Still, she appreciated the answer, giving the object a more respectful look.]

I see. What sort of metal? Iron?

[Because that would be the problem...]
desertdeserter: (7. Nay)

Pterodactyl satan omfg

[personal profile] desertdeserter 2017-05-21 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Finn scrambles to his feet after a moment to grab the blaster, turning the safety off for her in spite of the ear-full he knows he's going to get for it later.

He drops back down to look for his own blaster again, certain this time he'll be more successful in figuring out where it had skidded to in the chaos of the initial attack.]

Yeah, well, there's no roof on the wall, is there? I don't think these guys got the memo.

[ Oh, boy. She is plenty ruthless about dispensing justice, but she's not actually a Judge here and she's conscientious of that fact. Push comes to shove, she'll do what she has to, but she vastly prefers following local laws. Also, she hates sentencing people she knows, which is part of the reason she rarely 'knows' anyone.

But that's something she can't hide behind here. ]

Not sure. Anything but crime novels. Something with the wilderness? [ That's not really a genre, but she's completely unused to all the greenery still. ]

Fish aren't in my jurisdiction. And there's nothing wrong with being a loner, [ says someone who is by necessity also a loner. ]

[personal profile] ex_this_ismydesign36 2017-05-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ No doubt the score would have been impressive. Amazing what a set of bright white canines could do for one's motivation.

Will watched the dog for a minute longer, studying it's body in an attempt to determine if the animal was in good weight -seemed to be- before he let it go. He was in no position to start picking up strays; he was still a stray himself.

Instead, he began to talk back towards Finn. ]

He probably thought you were playing. Dogs have an instinct to chase anything that runs from them.

[ He extended a hand, if Finn would like the help up to his feet. ]
desertdeserter: (4. No way)

[personal profile] desertdeserter 2017-05-21 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[The voice is very familiar, and Finn gets distracted mid-regaling a couple people of his exaggerated exploits when he stumbles verbally and turns to see Poe, a look of confusion on his face that morphs quickly to a surprised grin.]

Poe? You're here?

[Time the second he's running into this impossible pilot showing up when Finn didn't think he'd be seeing him again. Rudely he has completely forgotten his conversation partners but if anything they seem more than happy to slip away the moment his back is turned.

Finn doesn't even notice, clapping his arms around Poe in a tight bear hug.]

I'm not intoxicated.

[She snaps, gripping hold of the strap on her bag a little tighter. It's not that she feels the need to defend herself, but she doesn't want people getting the wrong idea about her or thinking they understand how her visions work.]

My visions can be a lot to handle sometimes.

[That's an understatement.]

Drinking a little helps take the edge off enough that I can slow things down and make more sense out of what I see. And right now, we need what I see to make a whole lot of sense.

I was getting it!

[ forget later. there might not be a later. he's getting an earful now. she snatches it back like, yeS THANK YOU i can blaster myself like a Strong Independent Woman.

she raises it and fires off a series of wide shots, only one of which clips a pterodactyl. luckily, it appears to have hit a wing. briefly she considers hey, maybe these pterodactyls are just trying to do their pterodactyl thing and life their pterodactyl lives and this city was in their way.

then another one comes in for a divebomb and she decides she doesn't care. she squeezes the trigger again and injures the divebomber, which then loses control and barrels into the civilian anyway.

this is just going really great. a+ all around.

I don't know. What kind of boring adult crap do you like wasting your time on?

[While she doesn't exactly have a way with words or being polite, she is genuinely trying to figure out a decent answer for him.]
