riverview: may test drive meme

Welcome to Riverview's test drive meme! Feel free to dip your toes in on the test drive meme to try out your character in the setting, play out a mission, and get samples for your application at the same time!
● Reserves are currently OPEN.
● Applications open on June 1st.
● Providing all parties are amenable, threads on the test drive meme can count as game canon, as the plot in the prompts presented is game canon.
● TDM threads do not count for Activity Check, but they do count for Activity Bonus Points, so long as all characters involved are accepted into the game.
● Threading on the TDM is intended for prospective new characters, so top-levels should only be posted by players of these characters. Since the events in the TDM are considered game canon, characters currently in the game are free to use the TDM prompts for logs and posts on the regular communities.
Feel free to use the prompts below or create your own scenario. The setting is built to be flexible, so feel free to make things up as you go.

Following rumors about a magical healing spring deep in the jungle, a group of intrepid explorers ventured out to verify whether it existed or not. After finding the spring inside an ancient temple overrun with tree roots and flora, they brought samples back and discovered that the spring did, in fact, have healing properties. Just like the rumors said.
Until the authorities decided what to do with this information, no actions were to be taken, nor information revealed to the public at large. Unfortunately, the news leaked and spread to the alternative science communities as well as the top minds at Gramarye Magic Research. With interest piqued, several more unauthorized expeditions set out beyond the fence in search of the spring. And once the information leaked beyond these scientists and scholars? Everyday citizens also launched their own excursions into the jungle, many bringing ailing family members or friends along for the ride.
This month the mission is to deploy teams of skilled citizens into the jungle to rescue some of the less fortunate, unsuccessful parties. Some of these people will be trapped or set upon by monsters, unable to move forward to the spring or back to the safety of the city. Others have simply run out of supplies and need the teams to restock them so they can continue their trek. And some groups have managed to reach the spring and collect their own samples of the spring water, only to find themselves struggling to return to the city before the samples lose efficacy. Feel free to create your own party to rescue, and get a team together to do so!
Normally, living inside the Inhabited City is a pretty safe bet. You can go day to day without running into a monster or risking any kind of danger requiring a fight. Generally, the tall, laser-fenced walls keep out anything particularly dangerous.
The problem with walls? They only go so high.
While usually assault from airborne monsters isn't a problem that's on the map, there's a few weeks during late spring where a swarm of flying monsters not unlike feathery pterodactyls are migrating back to another part of the moon. They're only in the area for a couple of weeks, but during that time, residents can expect occasional attacks by swooping monsters if they should see easy prey. Usually, a good sturdy dark-colored umbrella is enough to keep them from seeing a potential victim or meal, but sometimes the attacks still happen. So the Perimeter Guard sends extra details, calling in all the reserves, to patrol the city and keep an eye out for citizens in distress. There's also a general call for anyone who's experienced at fighting to help protect their fellow citizens. Whether your character is being attacked or protecting someone else, be prepared - these monsters are quick and have very sharp teeth.
Over the past couple of weeks, the portal has seemed really fixated on food. Almost every time the portal changes location, new bundles of food are near the entrance, ripe for the Perimeter Guard Orientation Team to pick up and drag through. As a result, the Orientation Team has set up a free bazaar outside City Hall. The Bazaar lasts from the 20th until the 31st of May, and is completely free, featuring tables and booths laden with food taken from the other side of the portal. Many of these foods will be familiar to characters in the City, whether it's that special brand they're totally addicted to or a plate of grandma's family recipe.
Everything at the Bazaar is totally free, and anyone joining in on the feast is encouraged to share (read: gently not allowed to leave until they do) and to tell stories about the origin of the foods from their own home. It's a multidimensional foodie's paradise!
Prijata is a holiday in Riverview celebrating platonic love - essentially, it's a celebration of friendship, geared at showing appreciation for existing friends and finding new ones. While I won't spoil the rest of the prompts for the introductory mingle, one of the main staples of Prijata is gift giving, and the Government of Riverview gets into the spirit of it by giving small gifts to everyone who's arrived since the last Prijata.
This prompt can be used to give a quick idea of what your character is into so other characters or players can suggest gifts to be given them (or to give them) if they are accepted! More information can be found in the Prijata Pregaming modpost.
Whether your character is posting up a silly word game to distract people from the dangerous mission going on, trying to get hold of a friend, or putting out feelers for people to go out into the fray with, the network is going strong.
Alternately, an offer for a free app is popping up on new arrivals' devices - Friendr is a friend-finder and/or dating app. If characters choose to install it, they will fill out a short bio and parameters for what they're looking for, upload a snap of themselves, and then proceed to browse for matches. This is a typical swipe-left-or-right type app.
Many thanks to

He then turns his head back... and eyes the other as he rubs at his wrist. He's frowning now, staring at it instead of at the other.]
Something funny happened. Took us away from home. [That's the way he logics it out--something happened while they were in Platinum Jail, running along the hallways of Toue tower. Some sort of experimental technology--had they run into some time-space temporal displacement? He shakes his head, and he really doesn't get it.]
...
[Wait.]
No, not a dream.
[He looks at Aoba, pointing to his coil.]
VR.
no subject
...VR?
[ Maybe it out of an abundance of wishful thinking, but that seems to comfort Aoba. Something he can understand, something that fits in those jagged sides and empty spaces just so that it seems like sound logic purely because it isn't quite as foreign. It's a fantasy, like anything else they indulge in with their gaming getaways. ]
Aah! I should have known! [ Except there's nothing to know. The laugh that follows seems a pitch too high, a little too fast not to be nerves. ] Guess we've got no choice but to get the top score. [ The color has drained from his face, even if he feels a little less like shaking. That laugh returns, but he finds himself leaning his head onto Noiz' shoulder for support. This is okay. He's fine. Noiz is here and he's sure this is just some prank of his, right? Something to rekindle their romance? Aoba's imagination is running a little too wild --
Yeah. He's definitely in shock. ] But... I don't really know how to play this one. Say, are you holding out on me, Noiz?
1/2
Like the scent of Aoba's hair as his head touches his shoulder. That old, familiar, uncomfortable pressure of someone putting their weight on him. He's not an idiot, he doesn't forget their night together, but all the same...
He decides against shoving the other off, for now.]
I don't know anything. [About this place, about the possible virtual reality game they're in... anything. He narrows his eyes at the other, moving to look down at him now.]
Toue has to be at fault.
[because that doesn't warrant warning bells or anything.]
2/2
[His eyes dart away again, and he tries to bring up the screen of his coil, which means he's doing it around the other. At least he's not entirely shoving the other off, but using the other's shoulder as a table to bring up a computer screen is probably awkward, too.]

He turns his head on Noiz' shoulder, not lifting it up but just... staying. Watching in silence as Noiz tries to operate his Coil, the light of it dim on his skin, reflected in his eyes.
...He looks so nostalgic like this, with that knitted cap of navy blue and washed-out lime green, crowned in pixelated rabbits shapes and lined with that cute white fleece... his piercings look painful, always painful and yet he would connect those dots any day of the week now, or at least in his dreams.
Aoba's been staring for quite some time before he catches it with a flush over his pale cheeks. Some color is better than no color, right? Except that nagging question has been joined by more, so much so that he can't really ignore them anymore - one of them just gets pushed out by it's peers, right past his lips: ]
Noiz, I wanted to ask... you put your piercings back in again. Why? [ There was an answer he was given already, but Virtual Reality sounds so much more the attractive explanation, even if it hangs awkwardly like a frame that doesn't belong. Alternate Universe could sit as pretty as it likes but it's a truth far too ugly for him to bear. ]

He shifts an arm against the other, trying to get his Coil to access the network. But it was taking longer than usual. There really was something off, here.
He's about to open his mouth to ask him if he's forgotten so soon, but it's that question that catches him off guard. Noone catches him off guard, ever--so for the first time it's happening here, Noiz is caught in silence.]
...
Said as if I've taken them out. What is wrong with you...
no subject
Anyway! It wasn't a dream, it can't be some trick from Toue. This, this prank he's pulling... that's the game, he won't accept any other explanation! So he settles, watches him with mild annoyance as Noiz messes with his Coil. ]
...Let me see it. Maybe it was damaged by that thing.
[ Maybe it's broken, along with their collective wits. In any case, it's a distraction and Aoba sorely needs one, even if Noiz is a superior programmer - or rather, hacker - than he is. It doesn't seem to bother him, that disparaging between skill levels, and it doesn't' stop him from pulling that arm towards him, or holding him steady by putting his hand in his. ]
Hold still.
no subject
Oi, let go. What are you doing.
[When Aoba goes to try to hold him in place, that's when he gets annoyed. Reaching to give him a small shove, fingers reaching up to grip the others' chin, forcing the other to look at him. A crude move, but at least he's not gripping hard enough to hurt him, like he had his wrist.]
Did you hit your head?
1/2
[ Aoba's still trying to treat his wrist gingerly but that just makes his movements clumsy and ineffectual. He loses this battle of supremacy over Noiz' Coil and as he feels an argument boil up from his chest, he's cut short and ends up with his chin caught and pulled to redirect his attention elsewhere.
Blood pools instantly in his cheeks, his face burning red as he holds his breath. ]
...!
2/2
[ Aoba tries to twist his chin out of Noiz' grasp because just staring at one another makes him want to hide. He's so stupidly into Noiz and he knows it and yet he's staring at him with those pale cold eyes just like he used to. It kind of scares him, it's kind of hot too. Has this weird game been affecting him too? ]
Look, my head's just fine and so's my Coil... look. [ Except Aoba's in for a shock when he tries to use it, it'll light up but he won't be able to connect with his current settings. ]
It's you who's acting weird.
