From what you wrote about his personality I think these guys could potentially get along or not. It'd be contingent on a first meeting. Does Ronan like books? :|a

Ronan doesn't tend to do well at first meetings. He's the sort of character who (sometimes) grows on you. But we can find out and maybe tweak circumstances toward them getting along if you'd prefer that. If McGraw/Flint says that he was a pirate, he wins instant cool points.
Ronan likes what he finds interesting. He hates school but loves Latin and Irish music, fairy tales, and apparently dead Welsh kings. So if the books involve any of that
or maybe something illicithe's interested.no subject
For Flint's part, he has no intention of telling anyone he's a pirate. He's been saying he's a carpenter (not entirely untrue, his father was one so he knows his way around the instruments as they were in the late 1600s, anyway) but like. He hasn't been at all secretive about being from Nassau at the height of the golden age of piracy and he's also scarred and beat to shit with everything from knife wounds to obvious bullet holes. Anyone who believes he's a carpenter after they've seen even a tenth of them has cause to think he's lying. (and he's well aware of that, he just doesn't care.) He also hasn't bothered to eschew his weird leadership aura that much (which is of course contingent on how well i'm writing it that day rather than any 'YOU MUST INTERPRET MY CHARACTER THIS WAY OR ELSE' nonsense) and he can have a sort of Terrifying Intensity to him that certainly does not speak to a mild-mannered profession, haha. It's totally not outlandish that Ronan could peg him as a pirate with those clues floating around, he just wouldn't confirm or deny it outright.
RE: Could you wrangle/justify an interest in something like the Odyssey? Alternately because Flint is a huge nerd who will read literally anything he can get his hands on I can have him reading something about this dude? Might spark a conversation.
Oops right journal now
Can't blame Flint for wanting to keep the pirate part secret. Ronan might put it together after a while but having secrets of his own, he might choose not to call him out and just stick to jokes. We'll see. But he does like Terrifying Intensity in people (he has it himself).
Ronan's best friend was obsessed with this other guy to the point that he kept a journal and bugged Ronan to translate stuff
plus they found his body. So he probably would know stuff about other kings. If Flint finds a way to read up on that guy though, Ronan would talk a lot.I'll try to find some kind of classical thing he would like. I'm sure there's something out there. His father was from Ireland and really big on telling those stories to him. I might be able to dig up something related. He basically failed high school so he wouldn't really go for the standard Must Reads in English class. We've got some time before the game opens anyway.
no worries!
It's pure headcanon based on the McGraw surname, but I write James' grandfather (who raised him from about 8-16) as being Irish as well so we can fiddle with some overlapping lore history knowledge there if that would help too. c:
